We have seen them when we thought they were not playing up to potential strength. Not on this occasion. Nope. They lowered the boom on us. Perch fishing has dropped off in Lake Geneva, but is should pick up again soon. The trout fishing at Williams Bay has been pretty good for those lucky enough to run into them. Most of the trout caught this winter seem to have been' taken in Relatively shallow water, the depth averaging between 7 and 15 feet of water. A fishing derby was held on Lake Geneva two weeks ago. We understand that the fish were not biting so good on the day it was held, especially not the big ones. We heard that anything over a , pound was considered a prize fish. Well, we have had enough of Crystal Lake for a while so let's set our sights on this game on the home floor Friday night against league-leading Barrington. Barrington has been beaten, but nobody makes a habit of it. On Saturday night of this week, the Warriors travel to Antioch for a non-confereitce game. Then comes the final league game Friday, March 1 when Warren comes to McHenry. not prove anything, but shows that it is a good idea to try different depths until you locate fish. Lately the fishing has been pretty good in Lake Mendota. Most of our local lakes find bays have been producing some mighty big bluegills. McHENRY FROSH-SOPH TEAM BEATS CRYSTAL LAKE FIVE 55 TO 48 Birds flying north this time of year always bring stories of the antics of McHenry people visiting the sunny south. This little bird.,tells us that Bill Mertes has a very nice boat named "VERMAR" on which Bill, "Schmaltz" Miller, Kinley Engvalson and Leo "Pete" Rothermel set out to sea and to see if they could haul in some big fish. Twas in the Gulf of Mexico that "Schmaltz'* got a "bite". He •summoned the whole group and assigned separate duties to each member. "Be ready," warned our stalwart hero. All stood by as the big haul was brought closer and closer to the boat. Steady, boys! The final touch of masterful landing was at hand. Then came the surprise. "Schmaltz" had hooked a Schlitz beer can and looked around to see if Jim Lennon had joined the crowd. The McHenry Recreation Match Team bowlers defeated the Wonder Bar Match Team at Twin Lakes, Wisconsin last Saturday night in a three game series. Totals were 2646 to 2547. The McHenry team was lead by George Rodenkirk, then L. Thennes, W. Hoynacki, A. Krause and J. Larkin. The Wonder Bar lineup used Robinson, Hubbell, Golding, Burmeister and Zima. Next Sunday night our McHenry team meets the team led by Frank Cino, former All-American football star. Frank now has his own bowling alley in Bellwood, Illinois. Warrior Varsity On Short End Of 83-65 Score With Tigers McHenry fans left • the Crystal Lake gym last Friday night with a feeling that the Tigers hold a special jinx over the McHenry Warrior basketball varsity team. They had just witnessed the Warriors go down in defeat 83 to 65 after going into the game with a record of five straight victories. But, none could, say that our Warrior^ were not outplayed by the Tigers with one of the hottest shooting percentages of the season. It seemed like the Menke boys couldn't miss. The Warriors stayed, close in the early stages as Jim Justen made them foul him and then made his free throws with great accuracy. In fact it was Mc- Henry's 25 points from the free throw line that kept the score within reason. For instance, Denny Conway made 5 in a row before missing. The Warriors played it on almost even terms in the second quarter, but saw the Tiger lead widen beyond hope in the third period. -Jim Huemann was McHenry's boy. leading all scorers with 20 points and playing the brand of basketball that drew favorable comment in enemy ranks. John Hes$ Nfr&s a hard man to handle under tli'e boards as Crystal Lake controlled rebounds and jump balls. Coach Menke got high scoring from four positions in probably one of the best performances turned in by his team this year. The Warriors? Well, they gave it all they had as they always do. On this occasion they didn't have enough. The winners had the guns.
