"Ajg- BHCtOtrl It's a long, long trail but the current basketball season is fast drawing to a close. McHenry's Warriors play Warren here Friday night in the final game before the sectional meet at Elgin. Barrington turned it on to the tune of 96 to 75 against the Warriors last Friday night to sew,up their fourth North Suburban cage championship. on sale at the school for Thursday night. PASSING THOUGHT-- You've reached middle age when you've learned how to take care of yourself and intend to begin almost any day now." Watch for wrestling review next week. The game set a conference record of 171 points and was closely followed as Warren turned the trick 90 to 80 against Zion for a 170 total. Zion's Ron Stanton hoisted his scoring mark for the season to 302 points, only 9 points behind the record. He should be a shooin after the final game this week. This game Friday night should be a wing-ding affair. Coach Fulton knows his team has a tough one to crack. Warren beat our boys earlier in the season in a close contest and McHenry fans were not a bit happy with the whistle tooting. We missed that game, but will have to break a leg to miss this one. It is the last game on the schedule. DAILY PINUPS: They who seek only for prestige and self, may end up in a corner on the shelf; they who search mainly for love and laughter, are they who are sought Out ever after. Love is the desire for giving and gaining delight in having* given. A shell is fine for a turtle, but no shelter for human friendships. --Anonymous. GRADE TOURNAMENT WON BY JUNIOR HIGH THE GREAT OUTDOORS By Jack Walsh TOURNAMENT-- It's tournament time again and McHenry meets Woodstock next Tuesday night, March 5, in the Elgin High gym. Game starts at 8:30 pjo. Harvard has the unhappy distinction of playing Elgin in the first game at 6:45. Everybody knows that Elgin rates one-two in the state. Of course, if we beat Woodstock, we will face Elgin in the first game (6:45) Thursday night. The first game on Wednesday night pits Crystal Lake against St. Ed. That should be a battle. Dundee faces the winner of the district meet in the second game Wednesday night. That should be either Hebron or Richmond. A news release from the U. of I. tells us that Bob Klaus, who played a lot of shortstop for the Johnsburg Tigers last summer, has first chance at the regular assignment on the Illinois team this year. Bob is only a sophomore, but a lot of ball player. From Carthage College public relations office we-learn that Don Paluch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Paluch, has been elected treasurer of the "C" Club, an organization for winners of athletic letters. Don is a junior at Carthage this year. You can't keep those Johnsburg boys out of the news. We learned this week that Rev. George Nell of Island Grove has recently received many more honors for his great work in making life better and more wholesome for hundreds of people. We heard something Monday night that was really music to our ears. It was the honking of the geese overhead. Four different flocks went over during the course of the evening and they were all headed north. This may not be a sure sign of an early spring but it sure makes for high hopes. One of our neighbors said that she walked outside and all the racket the geese were making made it sound as if they had landed right next door. Maybe some birds lit on the river to rest for a while before continuing on their way. For a while there we thought all the mild weather would spoil the ice fishing. Now the weather man says we are in for another cold wave. It would be nice if he was right because the fish are still biting. Pistakee Lake, Meyers Bay and Channel Lake are producing some nice fish. They are not hitting so f&st, but are running good-sized. One fellow fishing near us Saturday had a tip-up and when he "horsed" the fish to the hole the hook tore loose. We know this fellow personally and also know, that he doesn't tell many fish stories that are not true. He said the fish was a northern and it must have run between 15 and 20 pounds. Maybe some day he will tie into this fish again and have better luck. Bluegill fishing in Lake Geneva is supposed to have been pretty good lately. We have caught some dandies there in the summer but have never had tnuch luck qn bluegills "through the ice in Lake Geneva. This winter quite a few have been caught. This might just be the start of a good thing. Let us hope for more cold weather and more and bigger fish. As a featur of the 56th annual Farm and Home Week at the University of Illinois, Father Nell was presented with a testimonial album containing congratulatory and appreciative messages from people in all walks of life. He has helped promote projects all over the country and his efforts have h e l p e d many needy p e r s o n s abroad. We would have to splash ink from here until next week to tell you all the good work done by this one time Johnsburg boy. We trust his rewards will be great where rewards really count. ANTIOCH VARSITY WINS 66-62 GAME FROM OUR WARRIORS A slow start at Antioch last Saturday night killed our Warrior varsity basketball team's chances of victory. Antioch piled up a 22 to 4 advantage before the Warriors could get going, then went on to win by the skin of their teeth, 66 to 62. It was in the last quarter that the McHenry team hit stride and came up from a 52-39 score to throw chills into Antioch. Dr. Gray Presents Trophies In Behalf Of American Legion The local grade school basketball tournament ended last Thursday evening in the high school gym as Junior High, under Coach Schoenholtz, defeated a scrappy St. Pat team 30 to 24 for the championship. The St. Pat team looked like no match for the Junior High team in the first half and trailed 19 to 4 at half time. Junior High boys played as fine a brand of basketball as you will see in grade schools during that first half, but found themselves up against a determined band of fireballs in that blazing last half. The St. Pat team made a real battle out of what looked like a walkaway at the start. Coach Doran's St. Mary team had to come from behind in the last half to nose out a hustling Wonder Lake team 24 to 22. This game had the crowd standing to watch a thrilling finish. In the first round of games Junior High had an easy time beating the St. Mary five 51 to 22 as Vaupell, a 6'1" center, scored 10 baskets and one free throw. St. Pat's had a great old time trying to handle Wonder Lake, but finally emerged with a 15-13 win. Following the final game, Dr. John Gray, Commander of Post No. 491 American Legion of McHenry, presented the trophies. The American Legion sponsors the program under the enthusiastic leadership of Cliff Fulton. The travelling trophy, presented to Junior High, must be won three years for permanent ownership. St. Patrick received a trophy for finishing first in the standings during the past season. A large crowd, each group loyal to its own school, watched the finals Thursday night. The tournament was ably handled by Cliff Fulton and well - officiated1 by Chuck Cuda and Jack Thomas, all donating time and know-how to help a good program for a fine group of boys. On Saturday night they visited Antioch and won their game 51 to 47, beating a team that is reported to have lost only once in 27 starts. Sharpness at the free throw line paid off big this time when McHenry picked up 23 points to Antioch's 13. Mark Vycital, leading scorer in the game, added 9 free throws to his 6 field goals for a net total of 21 points. Antioch started off with -a 14- 7 first quarter lead, then the McHenry team took charge 20-8 in the second quarter to set. the stage for a surprise victory. ANTIOCH (47) F.G. F.T. P.F. Last Friday night they came through with a 57-50 victory over Barrington, a team that had lost only oite game in twenty before- this setback. The home team gained a 13-10 edge in the first quarter then rolled along to outscore the visitors 20 to 11 in the second quarter. Building up this lead proved very handy wheh Barrington came back with 20 points (10 on free throws) in the fourth quarter. Each player sent in by Coach Cuda entered the scoring column. Cajthamel again led the point making with seven baskets and 7 out of 9 free throw attempts. Barrington gained 22 points on free throws out of 33 chances while the young Warriors dropped in 15 out of 27. , This young team (at one time there were three freshmen in the lineup) . has owung into winning ways and some good boys are on their way up to the varsity before they gain diplomas from MCHS. ;N Northern lllini Bowmen News By Irene J.
