SPOUTS McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday/March 7*1957 "AP- 9Hectft"l Local business firms are sponsoring the broadcast of the Regional Basketba'/l Tournament McHenry's Warriors toured games through station WEAW at | down to Elgin High Tuesday McHENRY HIGH WINS REGIONAL GAME FROM WOODSTOCK 78 TO 70 Evanston. If you can't get to see the games, tune in 1330 (AM) or 105 (FM) on your radio dial. Some good games loom over the horizon as the Forester State Basketball Tournament goes into the second round next Sunday. And the entertainment is rated tops. We saw Cliff Fulton's battling Warriors beat Woodstock in the Regional at Elgin Tuesday night and wondered where the crowds night and won their first game in the Regional Tournament by a 78 to 70 score over the Woodstock Blue Streaks. Woodstock got off to a lead early in the game and hit free throws to the tune of 19 out 'of 24 in the first halfr^The Warriors had fewer chances on free shots, but came up with 12 out of 14 in the half to gain a narrow 40-39 edge at rest time. FORESTER CAGE TOURNAMENT OFF TO FLYING START; FAST GAMES s LOOM OVER HORIZON FOR SUNDAY Top Flight Order Of Entertainment On Sunday Menu The C.O.F. State Basketball Tourney is off to a flying start and a-wingin' toward some great attractions next Sunday in McHenry's high school gymnasium. In the first game last Sunday the St. Mary No. 2 Juniors were completely outclassed and outsized by St. Gregory, but the boys fought right to the finish. St. Mary's Heavies (and some are heavy, brother) took the measure of the Aurora team from the Our Lady of Good^ Counsel court, 4J7-39. Entertainment The Weber Sisters were real cute and showed talent in their song and dance numbers. A quartet of youngsters from Harvard went over big, performing like old troupers. And Ernie Useman's Square Dancers never missed a step in their tricky little numbers. The crowd liked all these young people. The entertainment committee has gone into the big time and come up with established entertainers for next Sunday night. West and Maza, a unique pair, will give you enough laughs to carry through until the following Sunday. Be on your toes for some surprises when this pair takes over. McHenry's Frosh-Soph basketball team wound up a highly successful season with ai 62-38 victory over Warren on our home floor Friday night The home team was unable to gain much headway in the first half, but put on a scoring spree of 21 points in the fourth quarter to win in a breeze. Coach Chuck Cuda was able to use every man on the bench as the lead piled up to a safe margin in the final period. Mark Vycital was the leading point-man in the game with 7 field goals and a 6-6 record from the free throw stripe. .Cajthaml had 7 field goals and one* free throw, finishing a season of consistent good work. Richardson's 8 baskets led Warren. Tempers flared in this game as play became spirited in the last half, but officials kept the situation in hand, with handshakes resulting. A persistent band of young athletes from Warren made a real fight eff it until the McHenry team forged ahead in the last quarter for a 73 to 60 decision. The Blue Devils of Warren came to town with a squad that lists nary V senior. One sophomore is lasted with a squad of juniors that were good enough to hold third place in the conference until the Warriors bumped them back to a tie for third in the final standings. There were ragged spots in the Warrior play, but Coach Fulton was able to reach into bench strength to patch spots until theboys finally put the game away. Ed Cepulis and his off balance shots pleased the crowd and held the Warriors together in the first half. When he bogged down, Ernie Useman came in to do a good job of giving a needed lift. Matt Eichinger had a poor start, scoring only one basket in the first half. In the second quarter he got a bump on one eye that required a trip to the dressing room for a patching job. But, Matt was back at the start of the second half and that bat on the eye put fight in him that could not be denied. He controlled the ball, faked 'em out, passed sharply and scored 17 points in the half. The following named seniors, playing their last home game, were trotted out and given a hand before the game started: Jim Huemann, Tom McMahon, Ed Cepulis, John Hogan, Dave Granger and Ernie Useman.
