The Warriors were not afraid. In fact, they must have been a surprise to the great Elgin team in that first half. For awhile ^Elgin^could not' hit while McHenry was sharp. The final score of 90 to 59 wasn't the topic of McHenry conversation, It was the good scrap put up by the Warriors that counted. Jim Huemann got 20 points in the game and that's not easy. Jim was chosen on the second All-Conference team in the North Suburban and was fifth in league scoring with 204 points. Matt Eichinger and Ed CepuliS drew honorable' mention in the selections for their fine work. this week that won't come off. He handed out cigars, too! May the song in the hearts of all Irishmen be with' you next Sunday--St. Patrick's Day. -- McHenry Recreation -- Foresters-- F. Meyer, 235-255-S74; L. Thennes, 236-573; H. Schmitt, 204-572; D. In looking over lists of outstanding performers, we find the name of Denny Freund, son of Mr. and Mrs. Del Freund, as second only to Elgin's Chuck Brandt in scoring throughout the entiie Chicago area. Denny played with a Wauconda team that won only one Northwest Conference game and managed to score 342 points in 14 contests for an average of 24.4 points. We have watched Denny with interest since the days when we lived on Richmond Road across the street from the A. P. Freund's. Denny wasn't much bigger than the baseball glove he used to wear when he played catch with Grandpa "Tony". And I)enny used to stand right up to some fast throws by his Dad and uncles. See Johnsburg And McHenry Teams In Championship Bids Six basketball games were played last Sunday in the Forester State Tournament in the MCHS gym, narrowing the field down toward championship matches in the windup next Sunday afternoon and evening. It was St. Benedict of Peru in the first half of. the first game last Sunday, then the tides turned and St. Gregory Rangers earned a 26-23 victory. The same courts were represented in the second-game in the Junior Division and St. Gregory boys rolled along to an easy 40-9 victory. J. Turk's 23 points led the St. Peter and Paul Heavies of Virgil to a 72-67 win over Moline. A 25-point scoring spree by Moline in the third quarter brought them to within one point of the winners, but the Virgil five pulled ahead enough to win in a fast I finish. Denny Conway and Jim Huemann matched points, 16 each, as McHenry Seniors beat Johnsburg 46-39 in one of the best games of the tournament. St. John's Johnsburg Rangers lost a lead to St. Gregory, but managed to come through with a close 33-31 victory. H. Hettermann's 14 points led this game. St. Mary Heavies faded out in the last quarter against Johnsburg, losing by a score of 58 to 45. John McGee sank six baskets for McHenry in the last quarter, but everybody scored for Johnsburg as they pulled away. Scoring was well-divided in this one. Billy Romano did more tricks with balloons than one could imagine. Children went wild as balloons were twisted to form various animals, then went wilder as long balloons sailed out over the crowd. Anna May and Henry Balabanow made beautiful music with accordions of all sizes. However, the big roars of laughter came when West and Maza called Joe May, Ed Thennes, Vic Miller and Harry Conway from the crowd, dressed them in fancy garb, handed them musical instruments and then let loose with variations of musical numbers. Coming Attractions \ Many of you have seen the famous Vic Perry on TV. Now you will see him in person. He picks your pockets, proves he can see through solid metal, forges your signature, backwards and upside down, while blindfolded and carries on with a bag full of tricks. Vic Hyde, America's four trumpet man, who was featured in the Chicago Music Festival, will be here to show you that one man can be a whole band. Next Sunday is the windup olj this big tournament. Last Saturday we stopped to talk to a fellow who was fly fishing at Pistakee Bay near the Sports Unlimited Game Club. When asked if he had any luck, he replied "Just limbering up, getting the winter out of my bones." The Sport Show is in full swing at the International Ampitheatre in Chicago. It opened March 8 and will run through March 17. We attended it last Friday and had a good time for ourselves. The trout pond and floor show are the two main attractions. The trout pond involves paying a dollar to fish for 15 minutes and you keep the fish you catch, if you are lucky. Our .--Chain O'Lakes area was represented and they had some nice northerns, that were recently caughf/in a 1 tank. The pike even looks like a- tough customer when swimjning around in a glass tank. The floor? ^how was very good and included > some thrilling acts. Some of these were: sports car racing, high diving, a wonderful display of nfrtfg* handling and a jbreath taking indoor ski jump. The skier came down the slide, turned a backward somersault, hit another skid and skied into a tank of water. Believe me, some hearts stopped beating there for a second! * --Jack Walsh.
