Those tables are made of cement, and won't be moved with anything less than a' derrick. We learned from the Vets that any family group will be welcome to use the picnic grounds throughout the summer. If you have a large group such as an organization that wants to use the grounds, be sure to call the club house for an O.K. This will avoid conflicts; But, if Dad and Mom and the kids want to pack a lunch and head for a cool, shady spot, just pack away. You are more than welcome. Harry's 44 88 We are actufflly^beginning to feel a touch of sympathy for some of our friends who had such high hopes for the Cubs this year. Gheer up, gang. They can't be that bad! The Paul Karls family will tour in to watch the Sox-Yankee double header next Sunday. And that Dick Jager tried to tell us that Blondie is a Yankee lover. We watched the Tigers beat the Shamrocks last Sunday in a .practice game that was properly billed. Of course, none of the boys have had a chance to get in enough practice, but some bright spots did loom up throughout the game. Lack of practice even showed up with Hank Hiller and yours truly in trying to keep score. Wc plan a training trip to the southland next year to get in shape. Tom Nolan, a big fellow, started on the mound for the Shamrocks and showed everything but control. If that comes later, Tom is going to be a real hurler. Si Meyer, who now rates as an old timer, came over to Watch Tom's stuff and agreed with us that his fast ball was really taking off. We were sorry to learn that an <1 old injury may keep Howie ' Freund out of the game this year. He always rated with the best in our book. * Howie Katz has also decided to hang up his spikes unless the old urge strikes him along the way. He was in the game all the way and will certainly be missed. The Shamrocks had a new third baseman named Salerno who looked like he has played ball before. . The game gave Managers Bob McCulla and Joe Frett a chance to look over prospects and get ready for the opening next .Sunday. Hebron comes to McHenry-next Sunday for the first league game. Johnsburg travels to Elgin to meet the VFW entry. Coach McCracken is bringing his varsity baseball team along in good shape at MCHS with recent wins over Crystal Lake (6-1), Woodstock (4-1) and Warren (5- 1). We hear the JV nine is also moving along at a fast pace. Our school is on the way up in all athletic departments. We fuss around with rose bush es, evergreens and various plants, then watch the dandelions come forth in all their vigor. No care required. themselves, • but never hampers those that help others. Two heads are better than one, but not on the morning after. --Anonymous -- McHENRY itECRF^ATION -- Business Men--Final Standings: JOHNSBURG TIGERS BEAT SHAMROCKS IN PRACTICE GAME 12-7 A. The Johnsburg Tigers motored down to McHenry last Sunday afternoon and defeated the McHenry Shamrock baseball team by a 12 to 7 score in what you can term either as an exhibition or practice game. Manager Frett didn't have the usual spares on the bench so used only ten men Wally Frett and Willie Klapperich sharing the pitching. Manager McCulla had a full bench so used sixteen players in an attempt to get a look at all the boys who hope to break into the lineup when the bell rings, next Sunday for the opening of the county league season. Rather than try to unravel pitching records, let's ju^t say that 13 Tigers struck out and the team drew 11 bases on balls. On the other side of the scorebook we see 8 strikeouts and 8 bases on balls for the Shamrocks. Art Jackson was the best waiter with three walks. Bob Nolan, Howard Knox, Tom Huemann and Bob Comstock each had two free rides through pitching generosity. Weather of a nature strictly contrary to good Chamber of Commerce advertising has kept the teams from getting sufficient practice. But, the sun is shining this week, by gum! 36 37 40 43 47 48 49 49% 49% 49 55 -- BOWLING BAR -- Thurs. Nite Ladies-- L. Rutzen, 455; E. Meyers, 435; B. Meyers, 431; B. Hettermann. 177-445; M. Among them was that of Joseph Nischan, who was denied variation in zoning of property near the, city. Joseph E. Wetzler and Phillip D. THE GREAT OUTDOORS The Bass are starting to move into thajr spawning beds along the Fox River. This means the lakes and channels will also be producing bass. At this time of the year night crawlers are about the best bait. Just ..drift the bait slowly over the place where you see or think the fish is lurking. Sometimes old Mr. Bass will swat the bait or lure out of the spawn bed with his tail. Be persistent. Keep putting the bait right into the "bed". This irritates a bass and he will often strike for pure meaness sake. Bluegills and crappies have been biting pretty good in the Chain O'Lakes. They are hitting nymphs and wet flies. It is a fact that the people of the nation, as a whole, have lost much of their former admiration for the professions as a whole. With all this spring work around a home, our old standbys come in mighty handy. If it isn't a meeting we have to go»down town to see a fella. Who Got the Cadillac? Beverly Hills, Calif -- Coincidence can be almost disastrous when it strikes as deftly as it did at a Beverly Hills hotel recently. There were two guests, both named Arnold Rauen and both judges. One was from Chicago and the other from Washington, D.C. They wound up getting each other's telephone calls, mail, bills, etc. One was supposed to have the use of a Cadillac while he was in town. The other got it. They both finally checked out shaking their heads wearily. And a battery of hotel phone operators sighed with relief when they left. O MAY RAY SCHMITT It takes only a little time to put slides in order and file them neatly-- and it u.10 worthwhile in terms of smoother showings. Make It a Good Show Color slides are something almost everyone enjoys shooting-- and showing. But remember, no one likes to look at them projected upside-down. Nor is it cohsidered quite cricket to let your audience languish while you go through heaps of slides in search of a particular one you want to show. To avoid these pitfalls of slide show business, some of our friends put little tabs on the upper righthand corners of their slides. That way, they can tell at a touch that every slide is going td be shown right-side-up and "reading from left to right"--as it should be. If you don't want to fuss with sticking tabs on, there's another simple procedure to follow. Just make an "X" mark on the upper right corner of the side facing you when you put the slide into the projector. As for mifesing or mislaid slides, the best solution is to hav§ your slides arranged in series or groups according to subject, event, place, time, or what have you. This will help you know where each slide is and make it easy to have it right at hand when youYe ready to show it. Shuffling's fine for card-players --but taboo for slide-showers! So take these little precautions before putting on your next slide show and you won't get "lost in the shuffle"! Slide file boxes are inexpensive --there's "even one which looks like a book and will sit up right on your favorite book shelf. Having them all in one box is easier than keeping them in the original package. --John Van Guilder Shop in McHenry LAWN AND AT THESE PRICES YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO MI^S THIS OPPORTUNITY. Denis Litwin' again proved a handy ^man on the mound for McHenry as he gave up only 4 hits. In spite of walking 8 batters, Litwin had his strikeout pitch working on 5 batters. Grove pitched for Warren, allowing 9 hits, 8 walks and whipping it over for 10 strikeouts. ' Local observation says this was the best game of the year for Coach McCracken's boys.
