Thursday, June 2Qr 195? McHENEY PLA1NDEU.EE / v jciaaS PISTAKEE HIGHLANDS By: Wanda Dobeckl and, Dolly Novotny . k Twnorrow is officially the first day of summer and we are all (enjoying the warm (though moist) summer days. We hope you are all enjoying the picnics, hikes, swimming and fishing as well as the mosquitoes crabgrass, ants and sunburn. "Summer is lots of fun for all but let's remember to mix a little summer safety with our summer fun. Things Hfce swimming, fishing and boating can also kbe very dangerous. So please be careful. You can leave any material'ygtit want £ito donate at the community. center and it will be much Appreciated. Roads It seems the roads in the Highlands ape like the weather . . . every one complains about them but no one does anything about them. As you know, the main road will eventually be black topped and taken over by the county. I Many meetings and negotiations by our officers have been necesr sary to bring this agreement about. But the side roads are our own problem. We have enough oil to oil a good many roads but now a trailer is^needed to mount the oil drums/'for sprinkling the roads. If that is secured, then we will need helpers to spread the oil. But now if any one has, or knows of, a ! trailer that can be donated to the community for this purpose, please call Jim Bures, 539-J-2, so we can finally do something about the roads as well as we can complain about them. Remember, be on the lookout for any trailer that is in usuable condition and be on hand when volunteers are needed. walking? Well, if you did it was Mrs. Haefliger walking in th^ clouds last week before leaving for Hawaii. She was very disappointed when her son didn't make it home for Mother's day, even though he called from Hawaii. So last week she received a letter1 from him and in it was a ticket for Hawaii, of all things! While floating on the clouds, she was able; to pack and board the first plane for the island and now probably is sitting on the beach listening to guitars, or more likely, shopping for souvenirs. Have a nice visit with your son, Blancfc, and hurry home and tell us all about it. Newcomers'"' A .special welcome from all of us to these newcomers , to our community: Richard and Dorothy Orlowski, Adam and Georgia Rzechula, Mr. and Mrs. Hansen, Mr. and Mrs. Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Maiek and Mr. and Mrs. Zych. We hope you will be very happy here. Big Baseball Stars We now havf two big baseball stars here in the Highlands and they are our own Don Bentz and Denny Litwin, who were picked for the Chicago Tribune all star team. All their pals are sharing their excitement over this* honor and are watching for their picture, which will appear in the June 20 edition of the Tribune. We'll be watching too, boys, arid nice going. th^re, he -returned to his happy parents <?and all is normal once again. A special thanks to the Johnsburg rescue squad for their \yondertul, prompt act top that saved this new little life. Speeders We have received complaints about some of our residents who have(n't noticed that speed signs have been posted. Some mothers are quite alarmed at the speed that some cars go down their streets, and many are ready to sign complaints: Maybe we ought to start putting their names in the column in an effort to get them to slow down. Let's no wait till we have to print the name of a victim; start driving slower today. Couneilmen We have two new people \vho were assigned the, important job of councilmen recently. They are both in Unit 2 and are Alice .Wilcox and Viola Schubol. They will be taking over the blocks previously covered "by Rose Thelen, who is now in charge of the new unit 4 which is getting quite populated nowadays. We would like to urge you all to give your utmost cooperation to j our councilmen in your section. They are giving a vital and helpful service to the community in keeping you informed on what is being done. Dream Come True 0 Have you ever seen a dream Little Baseball Stars And not to be overlooked are the Little League baseball stars who play behind the Johnsburg school starting at 6 p.m. each evening except Friday. The 8 to 10 year old stars play on Tuesdays and Thursdays, jj'and the 11-14 stars on Mondays and Wednesdays. Local stars from the Highlands are Craig and Ken Thoren, Bob and Ken Fletcher arid Ricky Huck. For an evening of real fun, come out some night, watch these little leaguers perform. Oak Blight In case you're lucky enough to have an oak tree growing on your lot and you've noticed the leaves have been shriveling up, don't be too alarmed. The oak trees have been affected by a blight this year which is caused by the cold, damp spring. Our source of information (Jerri Vrbik) says the trees will not be damaged permanently, and will bear leaves once again ! next year, providing we don't have another cold, damp spring. ! i"- ______ j Maps Furnished ! Candid Blowers Saying happy birthday each week begins to sound rather corny and repetitious after awhile, but when it's your turn to receive these wishes, remomber we reaHy do wish you lots of happiness on not only one but every day of the year, as do all your friends and neighbors. »So happy birthday to jit tie Bobby Schlick, who was jtfst 1 on June 13.
