A fw AO- BHccStrl Couldn't sleep from 5 o'clock on this morning until the, old alarm clock blasted its shuddering summons-. Oh, brother--were we ready to knock off a few good snores about that time! Neither a dash of cold water nor a cup of coffee made a dent in our drowsy state. The second cup seems to be taking hold, and faint signs of life must be showing. Through the? haze we wonder if it was a dream or did we walk in to see his majesty, "Muggs", and he wouldn't speak to us. The wave length seems to tell us that Dreymiller brought hitn some African violets that were npt appreciated. Sure we never sept him any bouquets. JOHNSBURG NINE BEATS MANDY'S OF ELGIN 11-4 Base Paths Busy As Tigers Run 'Em Ragged With Thefts Backing up a neat pitching job by Ken Raff el with bast hits- and fast base running, the Johnsburg Tigers hung an 11 to 4 defeat on the visiting Mandy's of Elgin last Sunday. Raffel's control .- was much sharper than shown In previous games and his fast ball had plenty.of zip as he and Tom Huemanri teamed up as a snappy looking battery. Tom has quite a ball team this year and this may be a good chance for you to see the boys in action. DENNY LITWIN HURLS 3-HITTER AS LEGION BEATS CRYSTAL LAKE Denny Li twin pitched three hit ball and struck out eleven as the McHenry Legion Team beat Crystal Lake 6-0. Li twin, was in trouble only in the first inning when the visitors" had runners On second and third, but Gene Freund came up with Hess' hot smash to end the threat. Crystal Lake had only two base-runners thereafter, both after two were out. The McHenry team played errorless ball and turned in some fine fielding plays. Jack Schaefer was safe on an error and moved to third on Gene Freund's hit to open the game. Litwin's sacrifice fly scored Schaefer and Freund came in when the relay went wild. Schaefer walked in the third and scored when Litwin tripled over the road. Denny counted on a wild pitch. Bob Meyer and Roger Benson combined singles for a run in the fpurth; Don Bentz opened the fifth with a double but wks out at third on Matt Eichinger's at tempted sacrifice. Matt stole sec ond and third and. continued home on a wild throw to wind up the scoring. The win was McHenry's seventh straight, six over County opposition. They Nowak went to third and Raffel struck our funny bone--and, besides, it helps fill a column on a busy day: In Miami, police questioned a man wearing four shirts, four pairs of pants, a sweater, two jackets, an overcoat, gloves and three hats jammed on top of each other, who offered a ready explanation: "I travel quite a bit and don't like suitcases." A Des Moines man canceled a farm-safety lecture to the 4-H Club after he cleaned a tractor with gasoline, washed his hands, lit a cigarette, was taken to the hospital with burns. 1 In Pawtucket, R.I., a Dalmatian neglected to 4 bark when a fire broke out late at night in the kitchen closet, got himself deeper in the doghouse by biting the first fireman to show up. To a parent-child negligence responsibility bill, Wisconsin legislators added this amendment: A parent may avoid liability by posting in a conspicuous place on Vhe child a sign bearing the words "Beware of Wild Child" in red letters not less than 8 inches high on a white background. Fatal accidents in the past week have sent most of us into a severe state of shock. We were most closely associated with "Tony" Freund in various projects and find it hard to think that he will no longer be coming in to see us. "Tony" was justly proud of his large family and joy mew no bounds as he talked a. his grandchildren. He left too soon. But, God willing, for a better world. to second. Tony Freund's double brought in two runs. Block walked off the diamond for a talk with Manager John Toomey, but. went back to his chores, Sonny Miller walked. Lloyd Freund forced Tony at third to end the inning. That was all for Block. Toomey finished. From this point on, the Tigers scored in every inning but ,the sixth and left little doubt as to the eventual outcome. Mandy's put a little spice in the game by scoring four runs in the seventh, but these runs are charged against the generosity of the Tiger defense. Four errors were committed in the inning. Hbwie Katz, former Johnsburg first baseman, appeared as a left fielder for Elgin and was the center of a fairly good argument in the sixth when he dfove the ball into the trees in left field. The ball fell fair and the umpire behind the plate apparently ruled it fair. Then came a protest and a reversal on the decision. Howie lost a two-base hit on the decision that the ball was a foul that bounced back onto the field from the trees. You know how ball players love their base hits! Thirteen Tiger hits and ten bases on balls were well spread over the lineup and kept the base paths busy. McHenry (6) A.R. R. H. Mrs. Wallace Dobyns caught a beauty with a fly rod, using worms for bait. The fish put up a good scrap and just before it was landed broke Mrs. Dobyns' rod, but she managed to hold on. The catfish weighed in the near vicinity of nine pounds and provided some nice steaks. Bluegill fishing has dropped off a little. Your best bet" for day fishing is near -or in the weed beds. Use worms and a long rod or cane pole. Fish the pockets In the weeds and you will probably have good luck. The bass are biting pretty good. The only problem is finding theiSi. not many people will reveal a good spot if they can .help it. The best thing to do is to ask questions and keep your eyes and ears open. It looked like the Giants were going to gb undefeated for awhile but with - some Of the improvement in some: of the teams they had a tight squeeze in a couple df games and finally lost to the Yanks, but I bet Bart will move them back on .their toes for the next game. Bill Klapperich has lost most of the games thru errors and each game the Cards are tightening up and before long they will be right up there. Sunday's game with the Giants was a very interesting game to watch and the Cards forced them right up' to the last inning and only lost by one run. Bill Klapperich says, you watch us from now on. Pete DeCico does not say much but you can bet they are going to have to play ball to beat the Sox in every game. I don't know what is going on in Louis Swedo's mind, but I think he. is scouting all the teams as he hardly misses a game, but of course you can always depend on Louis to give a good account of himself and make an interesting game. s The standings of the teams as nf Monday, June 24th, are as follows: „ W L Giants 4 1 Braves4' 2 1 Yanks 2 1 Sox 1 2 Cards 0 4 There should be some changes after the games this week, so come on out and enjoy spme good baseball. Ellie Mack and Chuck Pierce shared the pitching and came through in great style. Charlie Olson did the catching and added some lusty hitting to the heavy attack. Every player in the starting lineup hit safely at least once. Geae Freund and Ray Bujak led the assault. Gene's three hits drove in four runs while Ray accounted for three with twp, hits. Don Bentz also had two hits while Jack Schaefer and Roy Benson knocked in two runs apiece, pan Sompel and John Mos$ came'off the bench to deliver timely hits. Denny Litwin and Gene Freund shared the pitching with Litwin getting the win. Litwin gave up one earned run in four innings while Freund pitched effectively the last two innings, but was the victim of some Shaky support. Gene also allowed only, one earned run.
