Then they climbed back up to around $17 in mid- May a year ago and have held close to that value since then. A moderate seasonal dip occurred last November* and small seasonal bulges were recorded in January and March. „ Many hog producers arid farm leaders have fearnt another bad break in hog prices this full. Chief cause of this fear was "the strong demand for bred gilts" last winter. ^ No doubt a" Jot of "in-arid outers" were hunting for g'.'ts. But the hog business is rapidly being taken over by professioral pork producers who raise their c\yn breeding, stock. Th^re is as jet no real evidence of, any big increase in pork production. In fact, the Outlobk is about as goo'.l as it v -r a yea* IOWA FARROWINGS. The latest sign comes from Iowa, the biggest hog-producing state. Sow farrowings in Iowa during the five months from December through April were the same as one year before. This is practically the same as Iowa farmers reported their intentions last Dec. 1. We suspect that the Iowa farmers saved 2 or 3 percent more pigs per litter this spring than they did a year agq. This would be in line with the long-time trend. We suspect, also, that farmers in a few other states are increasing . hog production moderately, although no large increase has yet been reported. Back® in March, a USDA survey and report covering nine leading states showed that .sow farrowings during the six months December- May would be practically the same as the year before. Summing up, the evidence^points to a very small increase m spring pigs, probably around 3 percent. PROFEfJIOnHL DIRECTORS' DR. JOHN" C. The population is up nearly 2 percent, and consumer buying power is up about 5 percent. The supply, of beef, particularly the everyday kind that competes with pork, is likely to be smaller than it was last fall. The supply of broilers,. which increased rapidly last fall, is leveling off. And it is possible that the supply of eggs will be smaller than it was last year. Recent prices for hogs were around one dollar higher than the highest price last summer. A temporary bulge is possible any time, especially if rain-soaked fields dry up so that farmers can get busy planting corn and cut their marketings of liogs. PEAK PRICE EARLIER. Last year the highest weekly average price was in August, which was unusually cool. Best prices this year seem likely to be before July 1. After that date market supplies will increase, and consumer demand is likely to be weakened by hot weather in the big eastern consuming centers. ' Sales at 200, to 210 pounds are good practice at- this time of the year. Any marked rise in prices would probably be temporary and might jjjstify cashing lighter weights. Hogs weighing less than 180 pounds, however, are likely to be discounted one dollar or more a hundred pounds.
