Once again the American Legion carnival drew crowds, from near and far. And once again Mc- Henry's policemen and firemen did an outstanding job of protecting the public. No wrestling show this year, but conversation got around -to some of the big times and roaring crowds that watched those shows in years past. One year John Dreymiller and YoUrs Truly w^re chosen as ticket takers and Frank Shreiner assured us that the committee had asked us after looking for two fellows not necessarily bright, but wide enough to block the entrance. We blocked the entrance and nailed everybody for a ticket until the ,show was under way. Then, if a couple of kids happened to sneak in under the flap, how could we see them with our* backs turned? "A dowager remarked that she wanted to send her dog to the dog show. "I dofft care at all," she explained, "for the prize money he may win, but I am most anxious for him to meet some really nice dogs." .DAILY PIN-UPS -- , There is therapy in laughter, there is healing in mirth.. Moments to remember are the for-get-me-nots in the garden of memory. Sometimes it takes a smoothie to give you a rough estimate. An egotist emanates his relation, with all the world and its creation. Saline solution feminine tears. Every dog has his day, even tho he's no howling success. RICHMOND NINE WINS 11-INNING BATTLE FROM JOHNSBURG 6-5 We hope the Legion made out real good. The organization has been good to and for McHenry through the years! Ed "Kelly" Conway's death started some of the old timers talking about the days when he was quite a baseball pitcher in these parts. He hpd a good head and good control. If you beat him. you had to do it under your own power. In sports circles or out, "Kelly" was a well-liked fellow. This week an old neighbor and school mate, Alfred Patzke, died suddenly. We used to shoot marbles together in the days when one "glassy" was worth at least seven clay numbers. In a real old-fashioned battle on July 4th, Richmond's baseball team edged the visiting Johnsburg Tigers 6 to 5 "-in eleven innings. This was the first defeat of the Season for Johnsburg in county league competition. '"Hits flew air over the place and quite a number went for a distance. Harvey Miller and Lloyd Freund, each batting in the No. 3 spot, each came through in nice style. Harvey had 3 for 5, including two home runs. One of those homers came . in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Lloyd had a 4 for 5 day, including two doubles. Johnsburg held a 5-0 lead when Richmond came to bat in the sixth, then things began to happen to prove that a ball game is never over until the last man is out. The White Sox won four straight from Cleveland over the past weekend and nary a Cub fan phoned us. If it wasn't for those d Yankees! Wally Frett suffered an injury in the game at Richmond that put him<$n the hospital. Reports are that he is improving fast this week. Johnsburg (5) W. Mett--IB Corns took--IB S. Miller--3B, P L. Many firms are placing ads on the hone run fence. Better call Charley Brown if you want to be inrhnlpd in the group. Following sound advice, the Pony League is sponsoring a program for funds in which the boys are joining in to do some work themselves. Helping boys to better themselves has always met with our way of reasoning. Our Great Outdoors writer is deep in the heart of Minnesota this week to see if it's true what they say about wall-eyes. We have no idea where our dear Editor, "Brenda", is vacationing. Maybe she is out visiting newspaper offices as a businessman's holiday. She shrugged off a Niagra Falls suggestion. In fact she ignored a lot of free advice we offered. Anyhow, we wish her a happy vacation and will have the welcome mat out for her return. 3 3 6 5 4 4 5 5 4 3 2 44 H. 2 0 1 4 0 1 1 1 0 1 1 12 H. 1 0 . 1 3 2 2 1 2 1 0 2 15 2B-Hits: S. Miller, L. Chuck Miller really went all out these past 4 or 5 days and put in a tremendous lot of work at the new diamond. God Bless Him. Tuesday night they went about as far as they can go, and the rest is up to us. Chuck really ran into a lot of hard fuck first with the weather and second with too much sand and clay and not enough black dirt to put a topping on the diamond, We will always be grateful to him for the hours his men have put in this past week. Lyle Anderson is going to start on the backstop and fence about Friday and it will not be long before the field will really take shape as a Baseball Diamond, and then our dreams will really come true about having our own ball field at last. That of course is only half of the job. The advertisements on the home run fence are not up to expectations so if the business men do not think it is a worthwhile cause we will go out and get it paid for in a different way. Please see the display in Carey Electric window. The boys will be calling on you. Please help them in their efforts. So much for that, lets get down to the boys. If you have a TV antenna on top of your .house that is not grounded properly or equipped with a lightning arrestor, it is like a lightning rod without good grounding, says O. L. Hogsett, extension safety specialist at the University of Illinois. If lightning strikes, it may damage the TV or set the house afire. Another hazard is attaching the antenna to the chimney without strong guy wires to steady it. A wobbly antenna will eventually loosen the mortar between the bricks, making the chimney unsafe. The best solution is to have an experienced serviceman, put up the antenna. Then you can enjoy TV without worrying about a fire hazard. McHenry 023 014 0 Manhattan ' 000 001 0 2BH: Bentz, Justen.
