TCiinking the man might have a grievance, we were about to turn him ov6r to the complaints department. But, the man said, "I want to talk to you about printing some World Series tickets." In a few minutes, in walked an old friend Martin Smith with a big smile and glad to see you look in his eyes. McHenry pitching bogged down after a good start. Bob Nolan hit a home run that would match anything Babe Ruth ever hit for height and distances. Tom Huemann crashed out a long one. So did 'Willie Klapperich. And Howard Knox hit one over the road that was a homer by all rights except that Tommy Oeffling and Dick Hiller combined to fire the ball to the plate to nip Howard. If the box score gets here before press time, we will print it. If not, so long for this week. JUNIOR LEGION TEAM LOSES IN DISTRICT GAMES Downers Grove Nine Hands Locals First Defeat Of Season It didn't take long for us to get Into baseball conversation; covering the years we Could remember pnd more that Martin could remember. There were those great games at the old driving park and later on the Owen property where the standpipe area constituted the bleacher section. JOHNSBURG NINE PLAYS IN STATE MEET AT ELGIN And did we remember when the White Sox came to McHenry? Dick Walsh was at the helm in those days, following Martin as team manager. How well we remembered that White Sox game. The whole town closed down that memorable afternoon. From out of town, people came by means of horse and buggy. Why, sure! Didn't we get a picture from someone one time and run it on this page? As we recall our sister, Ellen, was pictured perched atop a corner post which faced Uncle Mike's garden. A real Cub fan even in those tender years, but she didn't leave her post one minute that White Sox afternoon. She went to the game that day full of confidence that Roy Salsberg and Red Delahanty would dish up stuff that the Sox batters couldn't see, let alone hit. The Sox won. Well, it was great to visit with Martin and we shook on it--if the Sox play the Cardinals (Martin lives in St. Louis) we will some- » how meet at the World Series. Pickups; Television is a great thing--but it will never replace the good old keyhole. If you aren't as .close to God as you once were, don't make a mistake about which one has moved. Meet Chicago .Vets Saturday Niahi On Wing Park Diamond The 22nd annual Illinois State Semi-Pro Baseball tournament opened this week at Wing Park, Elgin with sixteen teams entered. Local interest centers around the Johnsburg Tigers, a team that has made history in this tournament competition in recent years. Given sufficient pitching depth the Tigers can make it interesting for any opposition. The Johnsburg steam will have a large following Saturday night as they tackle the" Chicago Vets, a team that is said to have a great record throughout the season. Evanston's Erickson Boosters, defending champions, will play Arlington Heights Friday night in their bid for a second trip to the National at Witchita, Kansas. Crystal Lake's hustling club, another entry from the McHenry County league will meet Peru this,. (Thursday) evening in the second game. There have been some changes made. During the first week a curtailment of special events between games will be noted. Rip Collins, former major league star, will toss out the first ball. On Friday night, you will get a glimpse of the beauties in the contest for the "Miss Baseball" title. This will be a semi-final event to narrow the field for the choice on Friday night, July 26. A popular change will see the 2-hour rule tossed out. You will see a full nine innings unless the first game teams each night are late in starting. If so, they will play seven innings. ' Let's follow the Tigers and remember to purchase your tickets from them before you go to the game. Tickets sales made locally will held the team's treasury. They say nice things about Bob Klaus in release from the University of Illinois. One thing they say is that Bob "stabilized the field and added a .394 batting average." Bob has a cousin, Terry Britz, who looked real good in pitching Crystal Lake into the state tournament by shutting out the Shamrocks a week ago. Jim Doran, tennis director at Oconomowoc Lake club this summer, sent a Report of activities to "Brenda" and Yours Truly this week. Jim added a footnote saying that he has found hope of McHenry adding something like their doubles tournament to its many fine activities someday. Bet we will. These were the first defeats after twelve straight wins. The first game was played at Johnsburg Saturday on a very wet field. The game would have been postponed , but because of the storms, most of the telephones were out in Downers Grove and it was impossible to get word thru of the postponement. The game finally got underway at five o'clock. j6owners Grove scored two runs in the first inning on two hits and a squeeze play. The visitors made the score 3-0 in the third on two hits, a walk and a hit batsman. Jim Justen doubled to score Matt Eichinger* for McHenry's first run in the fifth on a walk' and two hits. McHenry concluded the scorihg in the fifth when Gene Freund tripled and scored on Bob Meyer's hit. Don Bentz forced Meyer and scored on a double steal after Eichinger was safe on an error. & Mchenry had a great chance to win the ball game in the seventh when the first three men reached base safely but some bad base running stopped the rally and the game ended with the tying run on second. Denny Litwin started on the mound for McHenry but was forced out of the game in the third inning with a sprained ankle. Gene Freund relieved and pitched very good ball in addition to pacing the hitters with a triple and single. McHenry traveled to Downers Grove Sunday and Lost 3-1. Ray Bujak started on the mound but two scratch hits and two walks good for a run brought in Litwin. Denny got out of the inning without a run scoring with the aid of a great play by Gene Freund on an attempted squeeze Play. McHenry tied the score in the fourth when Freund scored on Eichinger's squeeze bunt. Downers Grove won the game with two unearned rung,in:the fi^th.., Litwin pitched firie ball in relief in spite of his sprained ankle as he was helped by fine defensive . work by Don * Bentz, Jack Schaefer and Gene Freund. When the home team attempted to bunt because of Litwin's ankle Gene covered the area around the mound. He fielded one bunt on the first base side of the mound to throw the batter out. Downers Grove has a very fin^ Legion ball team and it is certainly no disgrace to lose to them. The McHenry team and fans feol that with a few breaks they could have won either or both games. Litwin's injury forced McHenry to use its two top pitchers in one game. In the Sunday game four of the winners' five hits were infield scratches. The local team is not making excuses. They made some mistakes that the winners took advantage of, but they do not have to apologize for the games they played. The county league schedule says that Algonquin Vill play the Shamrocks here next Sunday. The Johnsburg game brought out the largest crowd of the season last Sunday. Johnsburg has an open date and will need jt; They play in the state tournament at Elgin Saturday night at 6 o'clock. If they win that first one, a day off on Sunday won't hurt a bit. RECORD CROWD ATTENDS ILLINI BOWMEN SHOOT The Northern Illini Bowmen broke all records for Illinois when 381 persons participated in their "Safari" shoot held July 14 at their field course. The Bowmen will meet this Thursday, July 18 at the American Legion home at 8:15 p.m. to plan their Broadhead shoot to be held Aug. 11. The next club shoot will be held on Aug. 4 followed by a picnic for the members. --- We are asked to call your attention to the fact that it will benefit the Johnsburg baseball club if you will purchase your state tournament tickets through any member of the team. Hetterman's and Lay's taverns will also have a supply on hand. Charley Brown has been the man in motion in getting the Pony League's new diamond built at the V.F.W. park so has not had time to get a column in this week. It's a big job getting a field ready for the boys and the help of everyone is needed. In plain words, that new fence and all the various items have not been paid in full. Warm wishes help quite a bit, but I cold cash is needed to pay the' bills. The line forms to the right. COUNTY GIRLS REPRESENT AREA AT STATE FAIR Stolen Bases: Justen, Schoenberg. We had good weather, except for a couple of Scorchers. The nights were wonderfully cool and sleep came easy. Fishing was good and northern pike were not of record size. The largest northern ran between 7 and 8 .pounds due to conflicting stories told by two different sets of scales. The eats were out of this world and no one left the table hungry. We had a couple of narrow escapes while driving along the narrow, steep banked wooded roads to the main highway. These escapes were made from skunks. They would be ambling along and when a car appeared they would raise their tails in a threatening man* ner. We would politely slow down or stop as the situation demanded, and wait until the road was clear. It is hard to out-bluff a skunk as two previous encounters have proved. ' r *v!f Minors .
