Richmond Community By Phyllis Carlson Rotary Last week the Rotarians enjoyed seeing some color film of the .trip Doc Harris and Claud Gordon took to Switzerland to attend Rotary International. Gail B. Gyllengerg came to show the film to Rotary. He is a friend of Doc faarrjs. Incidentally, the Rotary ^;lub purchased a projector so that they can 'see lots of films in the future. Two years of perfect attendance for C. S. Gordon,. A. Pickering. Fred Schroeder and Carl Grant. A year and, a half perfect attendonce for T. Ehorn, F. Foss and F. Goehrihg. One year of perfect attendance for F. May. Harry Anderson and Fred Schroeder recently attended a Rotary club in Superior, Wis., while1 they spent a short time at Gordon, Wis. . There they saw two delegates of Haile Selassie, emperor of Ethiopia. Tills week, in fact today, the Richmond club will be guests of the McHenry club for dinner. This is the dinner that will pay off the attendance bet that the two dubs had. The plans to attend the circus on Aug. 8 are coming along fine and drivers are still needed to take boys and girls of grade school age to the circus. Both drivers and kids are to sign up at the drug Store in Richmond. The Shrine circus in Rockford will be the destination and the tickets will come from Shriners of this area. Birthday Last week, July 17, Gerry Swartzloff celebrated his tenth birthday. He furnished the refreshments for his Cub Scout Den No. 3--dixie cups and luscious brownies with thick, chocolate frosting. In Gerry's honor, the den sang "Happy Birthday" and played a fishing game. badge in (Sub Scouts at the August pack meeting. Tomorrow, Jimmy Hoffman will be 10 years old. •> Camp Alpine This is the fourth week of the camp's operation this summer. Each week between 90 and 100 campers have' been enrolled; The director for this week is Rev. Wm. Hover of St. Louis. Mo. Water Fight The firemen had a water fight last Thursday night in front of the Community church. It was nice and cool after all the water flowed out of the hoses and into the Street. The small fry enjoyed squishing the cool "water and mud between their toes after the water fight too. Home Bureau Picnic Last week the Richmond Evening unit of Home Bureau held its annual picnic in the basement of the Community church because of the rain. It had been planned for the park in Genoa City, but rain had made a change in plans. About thirty-six attended the family picnic. Ice cream for everyone. Vacation Church School • Last Friday night the vacation church school program was held 4t Grace church. Fifty children had enrolled in the school and forty-five of them had perfect attendance. Nine women helped in the school. The picnic was held the day before the closing program. Hern and There Mr. and Mrs. Lou Burks,; Michael and Carol, have been vacationing in Wisconsin. Mr. and Mrs. Vernpn Harris, Bob, Don and Janice, have returned from a Wisconsin vacation. Mrs. Ralph Noyce and her mother, Mrs. Norton, took the ferry from Milwaukee, Wis., to Ludington, Mich., and from there went to Manistee, Mich. Miss Edna Speaker had several callers recently. Two of her friends, Mrs. Lida Owen and Miss Mildred Montgomery, of Hammond, Ind. spent a couple of days visiting her recently. 'Then Mr. and Mrs. John Jones of Rogers Park, 111., and Mr. and Mrs. Jo Bosenbury with their twin daughters, Joan and Jean, of Indianapolis, Ind. called on Edna. Another set of callers was Mrs. Russell Richey of Libertyville and Mrs. Pester of Grayslake. On Friday of the same week, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Reed of Munster, Ind., called on Speaker. Ralph Thomas died early Sunday morning at his farm home near Silon Mills. He was born May 6, 1892. at the same farm home where he has lived for the past sixty-five years. He married Marion Robinson oh Jan. 19, 1916. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Thomas farmed the land on the Thomas farm until Mr. Thomas' health prevented him from farming any longer. They have continued living in the farpn home, however. Besides his wife, Mr. Thomas leaves a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Schultz, of Richmond; three sons, George of - Sharon. Kenneth of Genoa City and Walter who lives ,>vith his mother in the farm home. A brother Howard, and a sister, Rose Propowitch of Richmond remain, as well as do thirteen grandchildren who loved to visit grandpa and grandma on the farm. Funeral services were conducted at the, Ehorn funeral home in Richmond Tuesday afternoon, with Pastor Carlson officiating Burial was in the Cedar Vale cem»- etery at Solon Mills.
