Friday, August 23, tl^e Luther League will have a swimming party here at the lake at the home of Ernie Vogt, who lives on Lake Shore Drive. All leaguers are invited for this evening of fun and fellowship. Everyone is welcome to attend the annual Nativity church picnic on Sunday, August 25. It will be held at Larson's woods located just west of Harrison school. The picnic is sponsored by the brotherhood and they invite you to come and stay for the day. There will be an outdoor worship service at 11, after which all will bring their dinner for the noon picnic. Then games will be played for children and adults. There will be a program in the afternoon and the brotherhood will provide the evening meal. The 8 a.m. service and Sunday school will be held at the church as usual. Don Price, superintendent of the Mel Trotter Mission in Grand Rapids, will be guest speaker at the Sunday evening service on August 11. Rev. Price was converted in prison, and has an inspiring as well as challenging message all should hear. A reminder to mothers with little children: A nursery is held during the morning service for your convenience so that you may attend church; various ladies of the church take turns caring for the little ones. ' •' Dutch Elm Disease" The first case of dutch elm disease in Wonder Lake has been reported. The state natural history survey division did the analysis on a sample sent-to them from an elm tree at the lake. This fungus which is transmitted by a bark beetle attacks only elm trees. An infected tree can only be cut down and carefully burned to avoid spread of the fungus. The state recommends as preventive DDT which attacks the beetles, in conjunction with pruning the dead wood which is breeding ground for beetles. Elm trees, either American, Chinese or Siberian, are one of the /our major trees at the lake. The City of Marengo recently called a public meeting to discuss plans for coping with the problem there, where at least a dozen trees were reported infected. Christ The King Church The savory aroma of roasting weiners welcomed the members and guests of the Altar and Rosary sodality's meeting held Thursday, August 1, at the Andrew Nemsick home in Wooded Shores. A brief visit and talk by Father Vanderpool preceded the business meeting. Mrs. Dorothy Nemsick, president, thanked all the ladies who worked at the rummage sale and made.it a success. Mrs. Lee Pickrum, chairman of the rummage sale was unable to attend but sent her appreciation to all those who helped. Preparations are being made for the annual church carnival and the ladies will supply the food and workers for the food booth. All who would like to help during the carnival are asked to contact Mrs. Nemsick at Wonder Lake 6773. It was also decided to eliminate the bake sale at church on August 11. Instead donations of cakes and pies will be sold at the carnival. Two new members were present, Mrs. Wayne Ryder and Mrs. Walter Czarnecki. Alcoholics Arinoymous meeting at the church 8:30 p.m. Glasscoe-Armstrong Wedding Miss Marjorie Glasscoe, daughter of Mrs. Otto Glasscoe of Crystal Lake, became the bride of Robert Armstrong, son of Allen Armstrong of Chicago, formerly of Wonder Lake, at 12 o'clock Mass at Christ the King church on Saturday. August 3, the Rev. James A. Vanderpool officiating. The altar was adorned with two large baskets of red gladiolus and whit? mums, and altar vases held white mums, white glads and red roses. The lovely bride, blond and statuesque, was given away by her brother, Richard Glasscoe. Her gown was fashioned of lace and tulle with a ballerina-length bouffant skirt and tiny lace jacket with long sleeves. Her headpiece was a lace pill box with an illusion veil and her corsage was made of red happiness roses. Her sister-in-law, Mrs. Richard Glasscoe, served her as matron of honor. She was attired in an orchid gown styled similarly to the bride's and carried a corsage of white gladiolus and orchid mums. chocolate ice cream and orange punch were served by the hostess. Mrs. Higgins received many beautiful gifts. Ladies attending were the Mrs. John Condren, Le- Roy McCall, Andrew Nemsick, T. P. Mathews, Charles Sullivan, William Lowrey and Jack Rice. Wednesday night, July 24, Miss Pearl Mathews honored Miss Jean Dickman with a surprise householder Shower at Mathews hall. The hall was decorated with little umbrellas made out of paper napkins in gold and white. A decorated sprinkling can was tied to the gifts. There were 'about forty guests, most of them frorn Wonder Lafce, who presented the honoree with many beautiful things. The tables were arranged in a horse shoe around Miss Dickman so the guests could see the gifts as she opened them. « Eight different cakes were served, one ^beautiful one in the form of a bride with a big skirt. Horse Show Results Vickie Johnson, daughter of the Carl Johnsons, took two ribbons in the Junior Horse Show at the McHenry county Fair Saturday afternoon. • Riding her palomino "Britta" she won a third place ribbon in the musical chairs, and^a fourth place ribbon in the potato race. She also rode in the adult show on Sunday. Other participants from the area were Judy Kadletz and Richard Mann. At the Wisconsin State Fair horse show at Milwaukee over the weekend Susan Ensminger rode "Limestone Lou" in the equitation class Saturday for fourth and fifth place ribbons, which made her eligible for the championship class the following night. Two weeks ago at Wheaton in the Ledbetter show she took second and fifth place ribbons. Her new horse "Wild Irish Rose" by an unfortunate circumstance lost a shoe and part of the hoof just before entering the competition, and was not shown in Milwaukee. However she will show both horses at "Crown Point, Indiana in two weeks; Flower Show Program Programs for the Wonder Lake Garden club's flower show "Summertime in the Country" are available at the Cottage Garden shop. You will need one to read the rules for entering the show and to see what limitations are imposed on specimens of flowers, fruits and vegetables for display. A glance at the program will convince you that there is a place for you in the show, whether you have ever participated in a flower show before or not. Harrison School is the place, Saturday and S^day, August 17 and 18. News Briefs i " Mrs. Mary O'Neil and family are leaving Wonder Lake August' 10 after nine years residence. Mrs. O'Neil will be living; with her oldest daughter at 3908 N. Ashland, Chicago, and Peggy, Delia and John will share an apartment, at 5563 N. Centred. Miss Ingrid Oesterlund of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is visiting her grandmother, Mrs. Allen Oesterlund of Wonder Woods and plans to spend the month of August here. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Garbisch of Granton, Wis., have been visiting their daughter Mrs. Marvin Wenck of Deep Spring Woods. Mrs. Wenck's sister Joyce spent the month of July at the lake, brother Erlin visited for one week and the Garbisches took Judy Wenck back to Granton for the month of August. Injuries sustained at the Firemen's carnival were several cut fingers of Vic Milbrandts when a pop bottle exploded in his hand. Also Donna Dean y&s bitten by a dog she had been petting, an out-of-town dog on a leash. Mrs. Austin Hood has the reassuring news that her father is off the critical list at the Memphis hospital where he recently underwent surgery at the age of 76. Mr. and Mrs. Hood and Chester went to Tennessee July 20 for a week for the first of two operations which were performed. George Pederson had an accident at home last Sunday where he cut his wrist with a chisel rather badly. He was taken to Memorial hospital for X-rays and treatment. Sue Ensminger left Monday afternoon for Waukegan to join the James Davis family and proceed to their summer place at Conover near Eagle River, to spend a week. Mrs. Rudy Jirousek of Wonder Woods entertained her brother, Lester, this past week. He is on leave from the Army, stationed in Virginia, and has been enjoying the skis, boats and swimming. Happy birthday to Kay Coursen, August 13. And happy anniversary to the Austin Hoods on August 5. Austin gave Iona a car to celebrate their twelfth. All Star Game The Little League all stars of Wonder Lake met the Evanston all stars in-a game at Christ the King field_.J[jinday afternoon. Fred KusCh, the starting pitcher, was hit in the neck with a line drive by" the fourth batter up with the bases loaded. Jimmy Marke pitched the rest of the game and held Evanston to two, hits the remainder of the day. Stan „Wenck and Jimmy Marke were the leading batters for Wonder Lake. A Pony League all star game .;s coming up, the team to be selected soon. Legion Convention Highlight of the Chicago convention for delegate Lois Weeks was -the gigantic parade down "Boul Mich" riding1 in an ancient fire truck from Hebron with other members of the McHenry County council. In conjunction with the convention, at a bivouac of 20 and 4, the honor society of women legionnaires, Mrs. Weeks was elected log director for the department of Illinois/ Carnival Huge Success Final figures for the Firemen's carnival last weekend are not yet assembled but from all accounts it was a great success. Catching the eye of the passer-by was the 8' elephant made by Van Alphen, of papier-mache (there was a dpnkey back there with the pony rides). New County Queen Wonder Lake was honored at the Fair Thursday night when Miss Beth Smith was crowned queen of the county, the first Miss Wonder Lake to achieve this honor. Beth who is the daughter of the Floyd Smiths of Deep Spring, Woods, has blond hair, green eyes, is 5' 2" tall, weighs 105 lbs., and measures 34-23-35. In addition to reigning over the Fair, Miss Smith received a trophy, a one-hundred dollar savings bond and a dozerv red roses. Eight candidates competed for the title and appeared before the judges in both formals and bathing suits. Rep. A; B. McConnell, chairman of the fair queen cpmmittee, was the master of ceremonies. Judges were Mrs. John Mitchell, Mundelein, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Greenway of Dekalb. The other candidates were Marge Hanson, Cary; Jeanette Freund,. McHenry, Pat Pfieffer, Crystal Lake; Donna Andrew, Harvard; Judy Rehberg, Huntley; Eleanor Johnson, Fox River Grove; and Marlene Memler, ,Woodstock. Wooded Shores Picnic The Wooded Shores picnic will be open to the public this year, Sunday, August 11, at 1 p.m. Come and watch those pigeons fly in from their twenty-five mile trip. There will be hot dogs, chips, ice cream and pop, and many kinds of cakes. For entertainment, boat rides, games, and a fish pond for the kiddies. Susan Jacobson won a blue ribbon for her brownies, and Bebe Liedtke and Janet Wright won blue ribbons for their yeast breads., - Fair Awards ' Many Wonder Lake young people won .ribbons at the McHenry county Junior Fair held Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 1-4. Quenten Moeller of Wonder Woods owned the Grand champion female Ayreshire animal in the FFA judging on Thursday. Quenten has seven head of Ayrshire cattle on which he won twelve blue and four red ribbons in both 4-H and open class events. His sister Ferol, also a Greenwood Gremlin, won three blue and one red ribbon for her sheep in the 4-H competition, and also on sheep in the open class Ferol took two third place ribbons and one fourth. Mrs. Zapel's Handi-Helpers were awarded a special merit plaque as a club, also Jackie Hill and Nancy Zapel won blue ribbons for their drop biscuits, and Carol Zapel won a blue ribbon for her fried chicken dinner. Mrs. Thompson's Wonder Workers made a fine showing with blue ribbons going to Joanne Kline for handicraft, Gayle Miller for handicraft, Janet Schimke for cooking and handicraft, Cheryl Vacula for handicraft, Lorrie Vacula for cooking, and Susan Watkins for handicraft. Red ribbons were won by Micky Hansen for cooking, Susan Watkins for cooking, Country Art Fair ~ This will be a big weekend for McHenry county artists and collectors when the Country Art Fair opens Saturday, August 10 for two days. Tfie Fair will be held "in the new McHenry Junior high school from 2 p.rti. to 10 p;m.-August 10 and 11. Paintings of many of the midwest's best known artists will be for sale as well as paintings donated by local amateur artists. Plan to attend the first event of this kind in the county, benefiting the McHenry hospital auxiliary.
