Watch for the details then. In The Spotlight this week and for a couple of weeks to come is the Pistakee Highlands Festival to be held on August 18, Sunday. The final plans are taking shape and we all, are looking forward to it. If you Would like to volunteer your services for one of the booths call Jim Bales or Don Dobecki. If you like to eat (and who doesn't?) make sure you come to the picnic hungry for the main course on the thenu is barbecued steer and corn on the cob. So save a spot in your tummy and in your purse for the toig event coming up in a couple of Weeks. July 27 weighing 6 lbs. Her moth' er and father are both doing fine and her two big sisters are very happy with the new little arrival. Welcome To Irv Sorenson and his family who have moved into the house that they bought from the Stawarski family. He and his wife and his two sons had a big housewarming party last weekend and a large number of friends and relatives were present to ertjoy the fun. We hope they will like it here in the Highlands and will be very happy in their new home. Who Will Be Queen? - Would you like fo be queen for a day? Well, if you are between the ages of 4 and 9 you may reign as queen of the Pistakee Highlands Festival on August 18. The judging will take place at 11:30 in the morning and all contestants must wear bathing suits and no cosmetics. The winner will be crowned queen of the Festival and given her robe and septer which she will pass on to the queen of next year's festival. She will receive fifteen dollars in prizes as the queen. This will be a big thrill to all the girls who participate so make sure your daughter is registered for this affair with Dot Johnson 684-W-2 no later than August 15. Buggy and Bike Parade You must also register for the buggy and bike parade if you wish to enter. Just deck those bikes and buggies in the fanciest finery you can find or decorate them in any original way that you can think of. You can fix them up as floats or fairy tales but be original. First prize will be ten dollars and second and third prizes will each be five dollars. So hurry up and register your entry with Dot Johnson today. Complaint Department There have been quite a few complaints lately on a few points of water safety. From these complaints here is ja list of beach don'ts it might be wise to remind your children of: 1. Don't run or push on the pier. Quite a few small children have been knocked into the water. 2. Don't take pop bottles or glass of any kind into the water or leave lay on beach. Two or three people have been cut by broken bottles left in the water. 3. Don't litter the beach or water with paper or rubbish of any kind, including lighted cigarettes. There were many just complaints against the old beach which will take-time to correct. But now that we have a nice new beach lets each do our part to keep it that vvay^^ Don't Forget to support the Johnsburg rescue squad's annual dance to be held on August 31. They have come to our aid here in the highlands many times this past year and have actually saved lives. And they are always the first to arrive when a fire does occur. This is your chance to pay the men who are always on call night and day to come to your aid. We're all going, are you? On The Diaper tine Little Miss Denise Dowe surprised her parents and grandparents by arriving quite a few weeks .early. She made her surprise appearance at Woodstock hospital oh July 25 about 12 noon weighing just a little over five pounds. She is doing fine now at home with her mother, Gloria. Grandma Grace Reinhart is doing fine now too after recovering from the shock. Gloria and husband Gene are staying for. awhile with their new little offspring at Grandma Grace's home so the new mother will have an experienced hand to help with little Denise. Another early arrival was little Madelyn Eileen Tomao who sur- Fancy Steppers Vem" and Bunny Thelen were one of the couples to receive their diplomas for square dancing recently. They should be able to show us all a thing or two if the barn dancing resumes this fall. I also hear they have been taking lessons in ballroom dancing as well so should really be able to cut a mean rug at the fall dances. The Water's Fine now at the new beach behind the center. More sand has been dumped and a brand new pier has been added. There is quite a large area of shallow water now for the small ones to splash in, too. Since the old beach has been muddied up by the moving island I think we owe the beach committee a big vote of thanks for getting the new beach in shape so fast. Eventually they hope to rope off one complete end of the channel and make it shallow just for the little ones. Around The Town Kathy Reilly finally got papa John to take her for that night out he promised. They went to Arlington for a belated anniversary celebration and: had dinner, and a night out. They, both had a wonderful tjme. Their recent guest, Edward Malinowski, -13, went home a trifle sad because he had lost his'wallet on the new beach and it contained some money and all his identification, if any swimmers have, found it they can. call Mrs. Reilly 621-J-2 and it will be much appreciated. Toots and Lou Spankaich are off • to Wisconsin for a week's vacation, j Have a good time and hurry back. Have you noticed that lawn of the Rapp's? Every time we pass they are busy jnaking another improvement of addition. They had quite a crowcfc of advisers last weekend when adding a new ditch we hear. From the looks oftheir yard they need little advice on that £core. Down the street we noticed the Griffiths had quite a house full of company. When you live at a lake it seems that is one thing you always have plenty of. The Schlicks and Paulys joined forces to attend the McHenry county fair last Thursday and enjoyed it very much. The Skinners were sad to see their daughter and grandson leave for California after spending a few weeks here with them. They enjoyed having them but didn't enjoy having to say farewell. What respectable Highlander was seen crawling through the Bentz's ^basement window and why? Cooperation vs. Complaints It's nice to see some community cooperation at times. We've all heard the common complaints about the weeds on vacant lots but regardless of complaints the weeds didn't disappear. So the Wilsons and the Johnsons got together last week and cut down all the weeds on the lot between them and burned off what remained. The little women were busy raking and supervising. And presto with just a little time and cooperation the. lot is all clear and both yards on each side look much better. Why don't more of us follow their example of cooperation? Pretty Cool Man Things were really rock and rollin' last week when* a few members of a local band got together at the center for a little warm up jam session. They were practicing for the festival where they will provide the music for dancing, an^l they drew quite a crowd. We were unable to contact them and find out the name of the group but we do know that Bruce Novak from the Highland's was one of the group. Pets Anyone? Gary Taylor's obvious hobby is pets. Besides a dog, he has twenty- five birds and many aquariums full of tropical fish. But Gary works so guess who is left to take care of the menagerie? Mama Taylor of course. She doesn't seem to mind too - much even though Mr. Taylor is away in Texas ($n business. She must like animals, too. Big Day I'm sure Gordon Murray will remanber his sr-vcnth birtMaja for a while. His uioui ueateu .h'uu US' a bfg day in Chicago on August 2, He was a guest on TV's lunch time little theatrie and then went to. the top of the new Predential building for dinner. Sounds like he had a very happy birthday. residents of McHenry County to register. TWs does not just pertain to residents of Pistakees Highlands. Marilyn Van Zevern, 112 No. Meadow Lane is the registrar and is on hand all this week through Sundeiy to register everyone at her home. All residents of the Highlands should register their new addresses as well as newcomers. Remember you can't exercise your right to vote in afiy election unless you are registered and now that we have the opportunity right in our community we should all be registered. First New Councilman Kay Sielisch's section is the first to elect their new councilman who will take over the duties in September. They all got together and elected Hazel Morley as the new block captain for their section. All other sections should follow their example and select their new councilmen soon.. With all the newcomers there will probably have to be more councilmen added to cover all the sections. Pistakee Patter The Bentzs were glad to see the face of their oldest son, Art, when he showed up for a few days leave from the air force. He was a welcome sight to all his friends and relatives. Visiting the Highlands •Mrs. Schlicft's sister and family enjoyed their recent visit to the Highlands. They commented on how nice our new beach is coming along. We also hear they enjoyed the Schlick's new television set. Their neighbors, the Dunns, were busy entertaining company last week too. They had visitors from out of town last Tuesday. The Murrays have been entertaining Sylvia's parents for a couple of weeks and have enjoyed having them here for a visit. Those vacationing Janquarts have returned to the Highlands with moye tan and tales of a wonderful time. , The Lamberty family were guests on a recent Sunday of the George Van Zeverns. Gea|g| probably engaged them in one of his famous horse shoe games. j Nite Out The occasion was Floyd Johnson's birthday for. a fflght out of dancing and fun for the Johnsons and a group of friends and neighbors. The group got together and went to a dance on. July 27 in V p • : * . i n cluded Floyd and Vi Johnson, Dot and Bill Johnson, Skip and Harriet Wilson, Toots and Lou Spankuch; - and Steve and Jerry Vrbifc. They all enjoyed the band and the dancing and everyone had a wonderful evening. A Note Of Thanks' Picnic Meeting A big and important meeting of all the committees working on the plans for the Pistakee Festival was held last Monday in the barn with the chairman Jim Bales presiding. The final plans were discussed and with so many people helping with the picn|c it looked almost like an association meeting night. , Have You Registered Yet? Help Wanted With so many people using the new beach there have been a few accidents and a life guard or patrol would be greatly appreciated to help keep an eye on the youngsters. There has been tod much pushing, running and rough play on the pier. If you teen agers or anyone interested would like to volunteer some time it might help to keep someone from getting hurt.
