Dated: August 19th, 1957. LESTER EDINGER, Clerk of the Circuit Court (COURT SEAL)' JOSEPH X. WAYNNE, McHenry, Illinois Attorney for Plaintiff (Pub. Aug. 22-29-Sept. 5, 1957) KM NEWS PRESENT SUPPLIES OF BEANS. CORN AT BECORD HIGHS PAT INCREASE Prison guards in the Illinois Department of Public Safety will receive a substantial pay increase Under the new personnel oode, ait was announced by Director Joseph D. Bibb. The new starting salary for guards in penal institutions is $286 a month, an increase of $192 a year over last year's starting rate. Guards receiving $290 a month in 1956 and having two years of service will be increased | to a maximum of $350 a month over a period of two years, the director said. The rate of pay for guards on July 1, 1959, as projected under the new regulations, will be approximately 20 per cent greater than it was'July 1, 1957. Stocks of both corn and soybeans were at new record highs on July 1. The carry-over of corn on Oct. 1, and probably the carryover of soybeans, will also be at new record highs. Carryovers of both crops, however, will be considerably smaller than some unofficial forecasts made earlier this year. Stocks, of soybans on July 1 were estimated by the USDA at 87 million bushels. Last year's total was 64 million and the previous record high was 66 million two years ago. In each of the past two year?, crushings and exports during the July - September quarter were about,71 million bushels, or more than July 1 stocks. The reason for this difference is that large amounts* of new beans have been used in September. Crushings and exports may exceed 71 million bushels in the July- September quarter this year, but they are not likely to exceed July 1 stocks of 87 million bushels. Fetffer soybeans than usual may be available early this fall because excessive rains delayed and damaged the crop in the Parly harvesting areas-. If soybean harvest is delayed, a shortage of beans for crushing might develop before adequate "sunlies of new beans became available. While excessive rainfall delayed and damaged the soybean crop in southern Illinois and some other areas, the weather has been more favorable than last year in western Iowa and surrounding regions. Excessive rains seldom do as much total damage as severe drouth. formers planted 21,650,000 acreB to soybeans for harvest this year, 3H percent more than last year. Hinois farmers planted 5,« 116,000 acres, 8 percent more than last year. Thus larger acreage will offset some of the damage to the planted crop. Prices of the 1956 soybean crop received considerable support from government export programs. If the crop is smaller this year, export programs may not be pushed so vigorously. Stocks of corn on July 1 totaled 1,9^2 million bushels, or 13 percent more than the previous record stocks of the year before; Disappearance in the April-June quarter was 624 million bushels, the grrtitest in ten years. Large numbers of livestock and lessened use of other feed grains led to thft larger use of corn. It now appears likely that the oi oD carry-oveir of cbrri on Oct. 1 may total no more than about 1,350 million bushels. While this figure would be well above the 1,165 mil* lion bushels carried over last fall, it would be considerably less than some earlier private forecasts, which ran as high as 1,500 million, bushels. In 1957 corn crop seems likely , to be at least 10 percent smaller than the 3,451 million bushels harvested last year. But this smaller crop will be offset, to part at least, by the larger carryover of old corn and by greater production of other feed grainsoats, sorghum grains and barley. Thus the total supply of feed; grains available for the 1957-58 marketing year may be about the same as in 1956-57. The support level for compliance corn will average $1.36 a busheL A price support for non-compliance corn is possible tinder present law, but it is not expected. L. H. Simeii . Dept. of Ag. Earn. •5 . *•!: Farmers Urged To List Soil Practices Farmers of McHenry county were urged by Clinton E. Martin of the McHenry county A.S.C. to report their soil building practices performed under the 1957 program. Payments will be made on all completed practices as soon as a sufficient number of reports have been received, Mr. Martin continued. While participation this year has been greatly increased over 1956, there is still a small amount of money available for approvals. Requests will be accepted at the county office until Dec. 1,1957. ASIATIC FLU EPIDEMIC Sporadic epidemic outbreaks of Asiatic influenza in various parts of the United States have all the earmarks of the pattern which preceded the devastating epidemic of "Spanish" influenza on the North American continent in 1918, according to a report to Gov. William G. Stratton by Dr. Roland R. Crpss, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health. "It appears likely," Dr. Cross said, "that Asiatic influenza now appearing sporadically throughout the country in a mild form will become epidemic later this year and possibly in a much more severe form than now prevails. It happened that way in 1918." "Vaccine believed to be effective in preventing the Asiatic strain of influenza is now in production. It is hoped that the vaccine will be plentiful on the market before widespread epidemic develops," Dr. Cross added. Buy U.S. ' Savings Bonds "You Get.The Girl-- We Have The House!"
