•i:m Thursday, September 12, 1&7 THEMcHENRYPLAINDEALER WonderLake News by Jane Duoey Local Girl Wins Trophy-- At the Indiana State Fair horse show last week, Miss Sue Ensminger won the trophy on opening night, riding "Limestone Lou" in the equitation class in competition with thirty other contestants, two of whom were from Chicago. She also took two fourth place ribbons in the show. ^"Wild Irish Rose," who was ridden by the trainer, took a fourth place ribbon in the threegaited class at the Indiana show. Susan plans to ride in the Trout Valley show at Cary (the old Curtiss Candy farm, now residentially* subdivided). This show is slated for the twenty-ninth of September. School Board Meeting #The budget for the year '58-'59 was approved and signed at the meeting of the board of district number 36 at Harrison, school, Tuesday night, Sept. 3. The board then voted to purchase from Kenneth Cristy, a piece of land to the east of the school of 2.8 acres, having the adjacent 100 feet of frontage along the county road and running south to the present stfiool lot line. Tile check is being held in escrow pending the formality of having the title examined and brought' up to date. At the present the school is located six feet from its lot line on the east, with no allowance for future expansion should it become necessary. The fine appearance of the building from a maintenance standpoint was discussed and Mr. Thomas Sps »sked to commend the custodns for their work. The building has been given a general cleaning, outside trim painted, walls repainted where necessary, and tile floors cleaned and waxed. Mr. Thomas reported that the total enrollment now stands at 383 due to some late registrations, and that there are a fejv more to come. Sixth grade has the largest teacher load with thirty-eight ^Udents in Mr. Wightman's class. Wonder Woods Elects Officers. At the monthly meeting of the Wonder Woods association Monday evening, Sept. 9, the directors elected the following officers from their body; president. Ray O'Neill; Vice-president, Bob Sandgren; treasurer. M. DeMores; secretary, M. C. Woodward; road commla- tner, John Noble; finance officer, Indelicato; park and fire commissioner, H. Choral Club Starts The McHenry Choral club has started its fall season and extends an invitation to the public to join their group. They meet every ^ Monday at 8 p.m. at the high ffhool music room and would like to see some replacements for the Wonder Lakers who have moved from the community. Don't forget, pack meeting, Sept. 17 at Harrison school at 8. Pink and Blue Shower Mrs. Phil Armstrong was honored with a pink and blue shower Sunday, Sept. 8, given by Mrs. Allan Armstrong. The room was decorated with > a dotted swiss umbrella over the gift table, and a white cradle on the luncheon table, and lovely flower arrangements. The cakes were pink with blue baby bunting decorations, and blue with pink baby buntings. The honoree received many lovely gifts including a crib and bassinet. There were thirty-five guests who came from Chicago, Wheaton, Crystal Lake, McHenry, Skokie. Grayslake, Fox Lake, Wisconsin and Wonder Lake. Memorial Hospital Auxiliary The Wonder Center canasta group, which" plays for the benefit of the Memorial hospital for McHenry county, met at the home of Mrs. Neva Fuhrer, Thursday, Sept. 5, for the first party of the season. Mrs. Pat Gallas and Ann Weretka had high scores. Other ladies playing were Mrs. Grace Markle, Judy Rasmussen. Melvina Knackstedt. Marie Milbrandt and June Kiddell. $6.00 were contributed to the hospital building fund. at the Palmer House |n Chicago, Aug. 1, 2, and 3. A trip was made to Hartland, Aug. 18, to take ice cream and cookies to the residents of the county home there. The auxiliary handled the food booth at the Legion picnic Aug. 24 and 25 and sold hot dogs, hamburgers and coffee. Miscellaneous Shower Miss Carol Maleski of Wonder Woods and Miss Lynne Steinert of White Oaks Bay honored Judy Hill with a "miscellaneous shower Friday night, Sept. 6. Carol and Lynn will be maid of honor and bridesmaid at Judy's wedding Saturday. Attending were girl friends from Wonder Lake and Woodstock high school "who presented Judy with a lot of loyely things. They also had prepared novel (rifts with cute sayings and good advice. A beautiful cake with pink roses and silver leaves was served and coke for refreshments. Legion Auxiliary Report Legion auxiliary officers for the coming year were installed Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Legion hall, with Mrs. Arp and Mrs. Whopper of Hebton serving as installing officers. Mrs. Betty Gable of Wonder Lake provided the music for the evening. The officers are: Dorothy Michels, president; Nancy Elbersen, first vice president;* Lorraine Stahl, second vice president; Marion Ruzicka, secretary; Jerry Elbersen, treasurer; Amanda Donash, historian; Leoda Freund, chaplain; and Marion Cannon, sergeant-at-arms. The refreshmets consisted of chicken salad, ham salad, and cheese sandwiches. Nancy Elberson and Dorothy Michels attended the convention Mews Briefs Mr. and Mrs. Chester Oakley of White Oaks Bay have returned from a two week vacation in Pennsylvania, visiting Dorothy's folks in Lancaster county and her grandparents at Hershey. Mrs. Doris Crane and daughter, Chrissie, and Mrs. Bart Carlson and daughters, Carlanna and Pamela, left the lake Thursday to drive to Mackinac Island, making several stop-overs on the way, and returned Sunday by boat to Milwaukee. Miss Lynn Wilkinson gave a surprise barbeque party Tuesday in honor of Susan Er.sminger who left Wednesday for Beaver Dam. Wis., where she will begin her junior year at Wayland academy. There were fourteen guests at the party. Lt. Rosemary Kendrigan, former nurse in Dr. Ruggero's office, spent a two week leave from the army visiting her parents in Woodstock and friends around the county. Rosemary graduated from Loyola university with a bachelors, degree in nursing in January prior to going into the army. John Smith Jr., of White Oaks Bay, left Friday, Sept. 6, for Texat. and the air corps. Bill Merritt fell off a truck and hurt his back Sept 3 and is now in the naval hospital at Great Lakes. He has a fractured lumbar vertebra and does hot know yet how long he will be confined. His address is W. K. Merritt, 1C3, U. S. Naval hospital, Great Lakes, 111. Ward 83N. Roger and Ethel Hansen, formerly of Wonder Lake and now of Harbor City, Calif, have been visiting Roger's folks at the Lake. The B. R. Redmans entertained his folks last week, the Harold Redmans of Centralia and Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Redman of Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gardner of Bloomington were guests this week. Peggy Selsdorf is home on a short vacation from her job in New York since last Thursday and will fly back next Sunday. Jean Selsdorf started her sophomore year at Marquette university last Monday. Sandi Sells left Sunday for Champaign where she will be a sophomore at the University of Illinois this year. The Rudy Jirouseks had a night out in the city over the weekend and enjoyed Cinerama and the CoQeige of Complexes on the iieiar north side. ' Wonder Lake Bible Church News The Sunday school staff is hoping to attend the greater Chicago Sunday school association convention to be held at the Moody church on Sept. 20 and 21. There will be three excellent Sunday school speakers, work shop sessions, special films and many other matters to do with Sunday school work. The convention will be climaxed witty a banquet at 6:30 pm. on Saturday evening. Please contact the Sunday school superintendent or the - pastor for more information. Mrs. Andrew Nemsick, president, thanked all who worked or donated to the carnival food booth and made it a success. Reports were given by Mrs. Nemsick and Mrs. Thorne, the official representatives to the NCCW institute which was held in Dubuque, Iowa the end of August. Yacht Club A1 Sinden's "Blue Jean" came in first in the race, Sept. 8, the last race of the season on Wonder Lake. Peter Georgeson's "Wet Pants" was second and "Miss Cindy" came in third. The standings for the season are "Fancy Pants"--First, "Wet Pants"--Second, and "Blue Jean"--Third. The "Fancy Pants," owned by George Georgeson the fastest race of the season, with a time of forty-five minutes for the course. In the special races, "Fancy Pants" won the LaGrecca trophy on the fourth of .July, and the "Blue Jean" won the Lyle Schuft trophy on Labor Day. Members of the Wonder Lake Yacht club are now going to compete in the frost bite series, on Pistakee Lake, staged by the Yacht club there. The racing will start the latter part of this month and they will sail until the water freezes. First Aid Instruction A class in first aid instruction is to open Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.in. at the Woodstock high school, sponsored by the Red Cross. This ten hour course is the standard course and will include only basic "life saving skills, and will meet two hours a night, once a week. It is a mandatory course for all bus drivers, and necessary certification for driver's license for school bus drivers. There is no charge for the training, but the class is limited to twenty-four students. > Fisherman's Rights "ITie story goes that a fisherman rented a boat at LaGrecca's Saturday morning about 6 a.m. and rowed across the lake and put out some set lines, attaching one to the Consoli private pier in Wonder Woods, and then left the vicinity. Later in the day, the Consoli children were out by the fish hooks on the line while they were swimming at their pier: About 6 o'clock in the evening, the fisherman returned to his lines, to be met by the irate property owner. The fisherman, however, stayed off shore in his boat and after a heated exchange, left the scene again. We Understand from the authorities that it is permissable to have one set line of not more than fifty hooks if it is attached to your own private property. There was evidence that this fellow was using more than one line, and also that he had used cut up fish for tife&V' which is also illegal. He has not as yet been caught up with. Doctor's Office Addition The addition to the office buiUk ing of Dr. Ruggero and Dr. Sturm in Wonder Center is scheduled for v completion in October. Dr. Sturm will have a suite of three rooms and a small laboratory in the new : part, and his old office will be used for a laboratory for Dr. RUg- ; gero's patients. The addition will also provide tor new medical offices in the rear, and a basement to house the heating and air conditioning units and for storage. The reception room will remain about the same.
