'i Jt - <n - "•' - •»' -- CANCER OF THE BREAST While cancer of the breilst can ,f£$cur at any age after adolescence, its highest incidence is in middle or slightly older age groups. With the life expectancy age extended, more women reach this category than ever before which explains, in part, why breast cancer is seemingly more frequent : than it, was in the past, according Jo the educational committee of the Illinois State Medical society in HEALTH TALK. Most breast lumps axe not maignant, that is, they are not can^ cer. Indeed, many women have lumps in their breasts almost constantly after the age of twenty. These lumps are frequently scattered throughout the breast tissue and vary in size with the menstrual cycle. Usually they are bigger and more tender just before the regular period. As the years «WSS, the lumps may become larger until the. time of the meno^ pause, after which they tend to go &way completely. * C ' Since there is usually too -pate with early cancer of the breast, a woman should consult .her physician once she getects a Jump. Because it is extremely difficult to tell from examination alone whether a lump is a common benign tumor or whether it is a malignant tumor, the wise procedure is to have a biopsy performed. This is accomplished by removing a small piece of tissue from the tumor area which is then processed and studied under the microscope. Discharge from the nipple sometimes occurs with breast tumors. This discharge, may be clear, cloudy or bloody. It, can be profuse or scanty. While nipple discharge may' be an indication of breast cancer, more of tea it means a benign tumor is present. However, anyone with a nipple discharge Should consult a physician immediately. . " Occasionally a lump in the axilla, or armpit, is the sign of a breast tumor. Most often these masses mean nothing, but they are ANNUAL FINANCIAL STATEMENT of the School Treasurer x For School District No. 12, McHenry County, Illinois From July 1, 1955 to June SO, 1956 __ RECEIPTS Educational and Building Funds Aggregate Amounts from Each Source ' County Collector, McHenry County $ 48,124.54 >£ounty Superintendent of Schools, Distributive Fund „ 2,058.02 County Superintendent of Schools, State and F^eral Aid (School Lunch) 742.77 Book Rentals .... 564.00 V.F.W. Usually the treatment is the surgical removal of the breast together with the muscle which underlies it, and the glands in the axilla. Sometimes, only the breast is removed. Frequently treatment with x-ray is given after the operation. The patient is soon able to carry on her activities normally.
