Well it's easy to see the gobli were out Halloween Night becau Wally and Georgia Sigman got up the next morning to find a new building in their front yard. You -guessed it! A nice sturdy outhouse. We've got a pretty good idea who these mischievous folks are--but we won't tell on them! Bob and Connie Dethlefson were the lucky couple to receive the outdoor plumbing last year. Wonder who it will be next year???? Better be on the alert. Halloween was the occasion for many parties--with the Lessard family having two. In the afternoon they entertained thirtyfive small fry all in costume and twelve mothers. Cupcakes, ice cream and hot chocolate were served and this gay group (all under 5) really had a ball. The previous Saturday they entertained fifteen couples, it was a potluck party with everyone bring- . ing her specialty. It was a, costume party and everyone from ftitler to Elvis Presley, was represented. They played games and each Couple did a stunt. It was all recorded on film -- and these movies ought to be worth a few laughs! Feather Party The committee for our Feather Party is working •-hard getting -things organized for the big event Nov. 16. Don't forget to mark the date on your calendar and plan to be there. It may save your buying a turkey! Near Tragedy The Lawrence Bogard family had a narrow escape the day they moved into their new home. It seems in the moving theif" refrigerator was jarred and started to leak. As a result they were nearly overcome with gas during the night. Fortunately when they awakened in a groggy condition they realized something was wrong and quickly aired out the house before any pf them became poisoned. We are happy this turned out all right. So Long Nov. 22 will find one of our young men being inducted into the army. Tommy Schwabauer will be serving Uncle Sam for the next few years. With his drum and bugle experience he ought to be a welcome addition to the army band! Good luck, Tommy. This and That - Dolores Lawrence's mother and dad, Mr. and Mrs. Locascio and their children all from Chicago spent the past weekend at the Lawrence home. Janet Davis's mother, Mrs. Green, has been visiting them and enjoying her granddaughter, Kathy. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hansen spent an enjoyable evening visiting and dining with friends in Elmhurst last Friday. The girls in the neighborhood had cake aand coffee at Hannah Harner*s home to celebrate Doris Shaw's birthday, which was the thirtieth. Happy birthday, Doris. The Octet Bunco club met at Vern Bauer's home for their regular meeting. Everyone was in costume and a good time was had by all. Vern Bauer won the first prize. Research Helps Make Better Pork It's true that hogs produce pork chops and hams, but they can't do it by themselves. Helping them out are animal research scientists at the university' of Illinois swine farm. They are conducting many experiments to help farmers grow better hogs that will produce desirable retail cuts for today's homemajeer. According to D. E. Becker, associate professor of animal science, research is the key word at the farm. He says that every pig is on at least one experiment during its lifetime. If you were to visit the farm today. you, would see growing and fattening$pigs on experiment in sdry-lot, and others in pasture. As you walk through the farrowing barn, a dozen or more Yorkshire Sows ae seen in farrowing crates waiting for the "blessed event." You might even see some newly arrived baby pigs. Their first "twenty-four hours of life are really'hectic. First they are weighed and earmarked for identification purposes. Then, their needle teeth are clipped, and if necessary, the naval cord is cut and treated with an iodine solution. The purebred sows can be seen out in the brome grass and alfalfa pastures munching happily. The farm maintains three purebred herds of Durocs, Hatnpshires and Yorkshires. Hybrids are also being developed from a cross between E-line gilts and Minnesota No. 2 boars. They are bred to develop desirable meat-type hogs that will yield trim, lean retail cuts. Some of the experiments in progress that could be seen include the merits of dry-lot feeding versus pasture feeding, vitamin and protein requirements of young pigs and the value of antibiotics added to feed rations. Experimental results from the farm are presented at the annual Swine Grower's Day held each spring at the university. McRfcNRY PLAINDEALER Siiiffiiil ~=e=s Special for Thurs., Fri. & Sat.
