HEALTH TALK IODINE DEFICIENCY ' Iodine deficiency is a major factor1 in the development of simple goiter. Hie deficiency may be due to failure to ingest iodine in food or failure of the thyroid to use iodine normally, the educational committee of the Illinois State medical society explains > in HEALTH TALK. The word goiter comes through the French from the Latin word for "throat." The thyroid, located in the front of the neck, just below the Adam's apple, controls through its hormone the intensity of the whole living process. In simple goiter, the thyroid 11% ually merely enlarges though there may be a slight reduction in the level of its function. The condition is not fatal, but it may be disfiguring. It is due mainly to lack of iodine in the gland. The enlargement represents an effort to compensate for the iodine deficiency. The goiter may exert pressure on the" trachea or windpipe or other netk structures. This in turn may cause other disturbances in the body, particularly the nervous system. This type of goiter makes its. appearance in adolescents, is more common in girls than boys, and its incidence is greater in certain areas of the country where there is insufficient iodine in water and soil. The Great Lakes and our mountainous areas, for instance, aye "gojter belts." The thyroid gets its needed iodine from food. In "goiter belts," therefore, it is important to supplement the diet with iodine. This is best done by incorporating it in table salt, and most table salt sold in endemic areas contains iodine. Foods naturally containing iodine include salt water fish, vegetables, eggs, milk, bread and other foods produced outside the "goiter belts." The iodine ingested from food is deposited in the thyroid and becomes part of the thyroid hormone. If, for any reason, normal action is impaired, ais by infection, or the iodine intake is inadequate, simple goiter may occur. While not often dangerous, simple goiter often requires skillful treatment, sometimes surgery, and should be under a physician's care. Toxic goiter, on the other Jiand, is a severe disease which can be fatal. The specific cause is not . ;oo clear* but worry aiu) tension often play % part in it apparently. Its symptoms include general nervousness, tremor of the outstretched hands, excessive sweating, a rapid heart rate and often marked protrusioif of the eyeballs. In this condition". the thyroid Works overtime at breakneck speed, sending excessive amounts of thyroxine, its hormone, throughout the body. * Thyroxine contains 65 per cent pf iodine. When the thyroid becomes overactive, the supply of iodine is depleted and thyroxine becomes abnormal in its chemical* composition. That makes the condition worse. Thfe patient loses weight despite a ravenous appetite. All the actions and functions pf the body take on new higher speed, resulting in an increased metabolic rate. Ttae tissues use more oxygen and, ^essence, burn themselves up. ' . Some patients respond to new drugs #now available; others require surgery. FARM , The market suppljj^of fed cattle in prospect for -SStewext sixty days is substantially less than that of a year ago. This<js the most important fact shown in the USD A report of cattle on feed Oct. 1. Farmers in thirteen states indicated that they would market 736,000 head of fed cattle in November. This would be 16 percent less than the number indicated for market in November a year ago. Farmers had 692,000 cattle headed for market in December, 12 percent less than last year. The smaller supplies in prospect for market this year should provide strong resistance to price declines in the next two months. The total number of cattle on feed Oct. 1 was estimated at 3,- 222,000 head. This is 11 percent less than the number being fed a year earlier. Most of this decrease in numbers on feed apparently will be reflected in reduced marketings in November and December. CORN BELT. In the nine Corn Belt states, farmers were feeding 2,370,000 head of cattle, 9 percent less than a year before. California, the second ranking cattle-feeding state, is feeding 12 percent less cattle than* last year. (Iowa is the leading state; Illinijbs and Nebraska are practically tied for third place.) KINDS AND WEIGHTS. The reduction in numbers of cattle on feed is well distributed through all classes -- steers, heifers and calves. The reduction likewise is' distributed through all weight groups. Numbers of cattle weighing over 900 pounds, however, have not been reduced so much as other weights. Numbers "of light cattle--those weighing under 600 pounds--show the largest reduction. The number of cattle placed on feed July 1 to Sept. 30 is estimated at 1,867,000 head. This is 22 percent less than one year before. The reduction in total market supplies of beef may not be nearly so great as the reduction in cattle being fed. " OTHER FACTS. Some facts hot shown in the report of cattle on feed Oct. 1 should he noted in connection with it: 1. Because of good grazing conditions, cattle are being kept on ranges and pastures later than usual this year. Thus more cattle may be put into feedlots after Oct. 1 than were put in last year. 2. More cattle may be sold for slaughter of grass during the next few weeks than were so sold the year before. DEMAND. Uncertainty about prospects sieems to be dulling the demand for. top-grade fat cattle. Patronage of some of the fancy eating places is reported to be down from boom levels. Prices oif the lower grades of cattle are holding up very well fpr this time of year. L. H. Simerl Dept. of Ag. Econ.
