•Thursday, November 7, 1957 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER PISTAKEE HIGHLANDS by Wanda Dobecki \ k Pistakee Highlands The November meeting of the ./community association was held last night at the center but details were not available at this .Writing. Watch next weeks column ;£pr the report of all the important happenings that took place. We Hate,.to "Complain ..BUT -- the*re are still those iplaints coming in about the Stray dogs in the. community. We *ill Jove our pets but most pet ,p\yners are the first to. agree they &aye their place, and that is in -jiheir own yard -- not someone .flses. .If your dog has not been taught to stay in his yard then he should and must be tied. It is |houghtless and just, plain stupid to let them run loose to ruin .others lawn and property. So ^£»iease if you have a dog that /runs loose, won't you keep him tied for your own good and everyone elses? $ PTA Fan Fair The big PTA fun fair is just a week away so you haven't long to wait! The big day of fun will feature games, refreshments and all kinds of entertainment. There jgyill be many interesting wares on display and on sale in the booths and there will be the regular skate and boot exchange booth. One of the highlights of the fair will he the portrait artists who will be present from 6^8 p.m. doing personal sketches. They are Mrs. Wilhelm and Mrs. Weiss. So' make sure you stop for your personal portrait. You can come for the evening ^flfeind plan to stay for supper since /•Ibsfreshments will be served all evening. Don't forget to bring your white elephants and your old boots and skates you want to exchange. See you there. The Small Fry , IJad a very nice Hallowe'en .party at the'center on Hallowe'en day. The center was filled with Aall kinds of ghosts, witches, ^clowns and funny faces. The old- •er goblins bobbed for apples while .the younger goblins bobbed for marshmallows on a string. Everypije came away with their reward and filed in line for the judging of the costumes. Prizes for the •best costumes went to puppy dog, Cheryl Down, hobo, Mark Pfingston, and two prizes went to an Mnidentified clown and hobo. © The happy ghosts then filed in line for their treat of chocolate milk and cupcakes. Mother and children goblins then went home for a short meal and a moment r*"'"1' . --, v"1:'1 • of rest before the evening of trick or treating. I'm sure that 9 p.m. Hallowe'en night found most little ghosts tired and ready for bed, dreaming of next year. -Costume Cavorting The adult costume party held on Saturday, Oct. 26, proved to be a real gay evening for all who attended. Vou couldn't recognize many as they entered in their Hallowe'en get-ups but it seems most of the subdivision was present. The center was decked up in Hallowe'en costume too and bright glowing jack-olanterns provided the fight for the tables. The costumes were fantastic. There were the usual witches and hoboes, a colorful cannibal pair who were joined by same relatives later in the party, and even' a headless horseman and a mummy! Prizes for the most original costumes went to Dolly and Ray Novotny who came - as cannibals; the funniest went to Floyd Johnson and Janice Janquart who came as the headless horseman and a mummy, and to Joe Ullo who was a sheriff. .There were games and contests enjoyed by all and refreshments and drinks were on the house. It was a real grand party and an evening that will be long remembered by all who attended. Down Meadow Lane Betty and Tommy Jr. were warmly welcomed home last week by Tom Warczak, who missed them both while they were gone. The Louis Tomao family have been confined with the flu. Both Donna and Cheryl had a bad case of it. We hope they are all better by now. Marilyn and George Van Zevern battled the flu last week too, but are all recuperated now. Marilyn entertained a group of friends and neighbors at a demonstration party last Friday. Kay and Wally Sielisch took Wally's mother home to Downers Grove last week after she had spent three enjoyable months with them. The Tomao home looks so pretty with a.new coat of white paint. That addition of a new breezeway on the George Van Zevern home looks pretty nice and will add a nice room onto the homestead. Congratulation Corner We wish Mary Beth Thelen .4 very happy sLxth birthday, which was on Nov. 1. His family will sure be glad to see him when he returns. We were sorry to hear that a former resident of the Highlands, Mr. Berg passed away in California. He lived in the subdivision for a long time and his passing was sad news to all of his old neighbors. *4# Page Fifteen Spankpch and their dates for the evening. Fun and refreshments were had by all and everyone enjoyed seeing Bud Messel being assisted down the stairs as part of his initiation into the Kluk Kluk Klub. The girls had their revenge later in the evening when the boys had a contest to button up their shirts properly and it was discovered that no one knew how to button a shirt up. A few hours and sixty bottles of pop later the party broke up and the kids retired home and to bed. night last Tuesday at the center and since a report was not possible at this writing it will be included in next week's column. After a little trouble with the stoves smoking the girls had a very good time and enjoyed the games and the refreshments. Boy Scouts The boy scouts had parents Do you wives of Illinois corn picker operators love your husbands? If so, remind them of these facts: In the past ten years, the number of mechanical, corn pickers has increased 425 percent until Illinois now has 90,000 of th£m. This .means lots bf opportunities for accidents if the pickers aren't operated carefully. The best safety device is a careful operator, and your husband can be one if he will follow these safety rulefs, says O. L. Hogsett, extension safety specialist at the University of Illinois 1. Stop the picker before greasing, adjusting or unclogging. Make "shutting off the power" a habit every time you leave the tractor seat. 2. Keep shields in place. Never operate without them. , 3. Dress for the job. Always wear close-fitting clothes that are warm and comfortable. "Extra thumb" gloves are especially dangerous. 4. Prohibit extra riders and see that you have a firm footing when climbing on and off machinery. 5. On the highway, use a red flag "up high" to warn motorists of slow-moving farm vehicles. At night use a white light in front and a red one in the rear. Obey all traffic rules. - If your husband follows these simple rules, he can harvest his corn efficterw^ and'safely.
