You'll have some fun! There is a- big time coming wp -Friday night in the MCHS gym. That ' smooth basketball toon from Libertyville is coming to town. •' - jMcHenty is still in a 3-way tie fpr second place, but things can cfauige this Week. Crystal Lake goes: to Barrington to try to knock off the leading Broncos Friday nij^ht and may have just what it tikes to turn the trick. '<Since McHenry is tied with Crystal Lake and Libertyville for second place right now, something fels to give. .•^Libertyville beat McHenry earlier this season so now it is Our turn. The Warriors have knocked off some top teams, including Barrington, so the only good reason they can't win this one is that five other guys will be out there frying to prevent such an occurrence. ; Jh basketball, like some other sports, perhaps too much fuss is made over the- leading scorers in each game. In the Woodstock game we saw some real nifty passing and great team play on the part of the Warriors in a second quarter splurge: The boys were anxious to feed their mates. That wins ball games. in addition to the game, they have planned "Parents' Night" for the Friday night crowd. Parents of players and of our nice group of cheerleaders will be introduced tc the crowd. Better get there early. We doubt if there will be enough seats for all. Of course, a check room would help. Quite a' 'ftw^spaces are taken up with piles of coats/ Another help would be to have somebody get out on the floor and ask those seated to move that-a-way.. Just asking ^he crowd to move closer together doesn't mean much except to the young fellow who has brought his best girl to the game. YOUNG WARRIORS TIE SEASON HIGH IN WIN OVER HARVARD 66--50 Scoring a total of 66 points for the second time in as many nights the Warrior Frosh-Soph squad defeated the Harvard Hornets last Saturday night by a score of 66 to 50. Picking up where they left off against Woodstock the previous night, the Warriors fast breaking offense was to much for the lads from Harvard. The score at the end of the first quarter was McHenry 18, Harvard 7. In the second period the local lads matched their first quarter total of 18, while the Hornets counted 14 points. The half-time score was MCHS 36, Harvard 21. Tremendous out-shooting by John Steinbach accounted for 10 of the Warrior point total in. the second quarter. TTjyg Warriors out-scored Harv: ard 12 to 11 in the third .period. Each team hit for 18 in the final quarter. The final count again, 66 to 50, which accounted for the victory for the local boys from MCHS. Steinbach, who played his best game of the season, was . high point man for the Warriors, pumping 21 points through the nets. Jimmy Hester and Bill Oeffling had 11 points each. President encyclopaedia Britannlca In 1895 this state was nickis,!', t named "Tree Planter's State" 5?!*. because Arbor Day originated there; in 1945 the Legislature kJi' adopted instead the nickname |-/ $ of its state university football v v team, the Cornhuskers. Its chief ' . river is "a mile wide and an inch deep." . f V (Answer, printed upside down, has as many letters as there are tqttare*.) We tried something new last week at Lake Geneva. It was a midget-sized spinning reel. The hand line method of perch fishing has never been very appealing to us and as a result we use a regular jigging rod with two or three pound test line. When the fish are down deep it is quite a problem to wrap the line up without a good reel. There are many devices on the market that serve just as a place to keep extra line, but this little open bail spinning reel is, in our estimation, the best thing yet for deep water ice fishing with light tackle. Bluegill and crappie fishing has been very good at Whitewater. Corn borers and weed worms are the best baits. If you do not get results try wigglers or mousees. Just one word of warning. Be sure to observe parking regulations. Some of the best spots on many lakes have become almost inaccessible because of careless parking that resulted in "no parking" signs and some tickets from the police. McHenry's Warriors continued their winning ways last Saturday night with a 70-62 victory over the visiting Harvard Hornets at McHenry. The victory increased the, Warrior's won-lost record to 14 wins and 4 losses. The win was significant because Harvard represented the first place team in the SHARK conference. The Warriors- started out in fine style and looked as though they were going to break their vecord high'of 81 points in a game this year. Coach Fulton's boys piled up 45 points in the first' half, which is their high for the season. - McHenry led 24-S ,at the quarter and cutscored Harvard 21 to 20 in -the second period to hold i 45-29 half time a i vantage. As has been common in the nast 4 or 5 games, the Warriors 'ooked unbeatable in the first half and due to some unknown reason ir no ivason at„ all, suddenly changed course in the final half. Coach Fulton summed it up with hese words. "It seems we just -an't stand prosperity." The visiting Hornets outscored is 33 to 25 in the second half. Evidence of our lack of sharpness was a grand total of 25 violations n the game. (13 bad passes, 5 ^teps, and 7 fumbles.) Despite these bad points, the Warriors continued their remarkable shooting. We shot a tremendous 65.5% in the first half and ended up with a final percentage >f 54.59r. Harvard shot a respectable §7.8 %. McHenry is now shooting at a 10.39S- clip for the season. Another good point was that all 5 starters totaled 10 or more points. Individual leaders were: Matt Eichinger--18 points and 9 assists; Denny Conway--12 Toints; Jim Justen--10 points and 4 recoveries; Don Bentz--10 points and 12 rebounds; Mark Vycital-- 10 points. Tom Claybaugh and Roger Benson came off the bench and played fine ball. Incidentally, Matt Eichinger received honorable mention in the Chicago American's weekly all-star team in the Chicago area. This weekend will probably be one of the most important during this present season. It was a very good match and although Barrington was vastly improved from last year, McHenry had too many big guns. It was a satisfying win for both Mr. Kalk and the members of the squad. A funeral Mass was sung at 9:30 6'clock Saturday at St. Mary's K^furch, with burial in St. Mary's demetery. by Ron Smith The McHenry Warriors traveled to Woodstock last Friday and won their fifth conference game as they whipped the Blue Streaks 68--61. Woodstock played their finest game of the year and gave the Warriors a little scare in that last half. We had beaten Woodstock- previously by margins of 3, 20, and, 27 points and this 7 point margin was a little surprising. However, this victory coupled with Harrington and Crystal Lake victories kept the Bronchos out in front of the pack and left McHenry and Crystal Lake tied for second place. Libertyville was idle and now holds down third place with a 4-2 record. The same old story held true in this game as the Warriors looked unbeatable in that first half and suddenly let down in the last half. The teams were all knotted up at 15-15 in the first quarter. In the second period, Coach Fulton's boys piled up their highest scoring quarter thus f&r in conference play by scoring 27 points to1 take a 42-25 halftime advantage. The Blue Streaks outscored us 18-10 in the third period and 18- 16 in the final period, but lost a 68-61 margin due to our tremendous second quarter play. The Warriors scored 27 points in the second quarter and 26 in the second half to illustrate their second half inefficiency. Another comparison is our 3 violations in the first half and 12 in the second. Both teams shot very well as the Blue Streaks hit at a 48.1% clip and we shot 43.9%. One good sign of the contest wat that the Warriors had ^ regulars score, in double figures. Summary of performances: Denny Conway--17 points and 5 recoveries; Don Bentz--16 points and 16 rebounds; Matt Eichinger --15 points, 6 assists, and 5 recoveries; Jim Justen -- 14 rebounds. As usual there was a very good turnout of McHenry fans to support the team. Our won-lost record is now 13--4 and 5--2 in conference competition. Tues. 89ers-- C. Schlitt, 434; D. Freund, 456; J. FROSH-SOPHS HIT SEASON HIGH 66-45 Of WOODSTOCK GAME The Warrior Frosh-Soph team defeated the Woodstock Streaks last Friday night by a score of 6# to 45, as four Warriors regulars scored better than ten points each. Jim Hester had 14, John Steinbach 13, Bill Oeffling 12 and Mike Creighton 11. The Warriors were behind by one point as the first quarter ended, but the local lads reversed the situation on the first play of the second stanza. Fast braking with each opportunity, the Warriors outscored the Streaks, 22 to 11'in the second quarter; At intermission the Warriors led 33 to 23. By the end of the third quarter the Warriors had built up a 47 ' to 31 advantage. With the reserve players playing most of the last quarter and . gaining some valuable experience, the Warriors outshot Woodstock 19 to 14 in the fourth period, resulting in the 66 to 45 Warrior triumph. The Warriors shf>t 51% from the field as ihey hit on 23 eff 45 shots, while they made 20 of 31 free throw attempts. Mike Creighton made seven out of eight charity shots.
