A Fig free Grows In Ci following, interesting story was sent to the Plaindealer by a McHenry man who recently completed his MA degree in journalism at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, M&rk Hopkins. It was inspired by a visit to McHenry over the Easter holiday weekend. The tree that grew iift Brooklyn doesn't hold a canale to a certain one growing<^n McHenry. This tree will produce 200 figs by fall if last year's harvest is any indication. McHenry's fig tree, owned . by Mr. and Mrs. Donald Doherty, 208 Green street, is admittedly out of its habitat. Fig trees are more comfortable in dry, wany climates. liie Dohertys took possession of the fig tree when they bought their Green street home from the Charles Unti family last month. . Unti imported it from Florida some years ago and installed it in a green house which mirrors the growing habits of fig trees. The green house is about 20 feet high and 10 feet square. F ig trees, common in the Mediterranean area, grow between 10 and 30 feet high. They have been grown commercially in the United States for more than 50 years, primarily in California. The Doherty fig tree is just beginning to bud. "I don't know how high it will grow," Mrs. Doherty says. The tree is cut down every year and exposed to a killing frost. It regenerates itself the following year. There was some question whether the fig tree would stay after the Dohertys bought their home. But now they have become attached to it; so have two of their four children apparently. The other two aren't old enough to know a fig tree from a spruce. "I think the tree will be here for quite a few years," Mrs. Doherty commented. There is the problem, however, of what to do with 200 figs every year. It doesn't seem feasible to donate them to the school lunch program and Mrs. Doherty says emphatically: "I don't like them." oi^StaihysM* •. • HOUSE HMOS AVAIABLE AT r by Lillian Niemiec McHenry 2778 Our street signs are now posted and our house numbers are available thru Mrs. Leah Fritz, our village clerk. Spring Spring is a wonderful time of the year. It is a time when everything comes to life. The trees are budding and, the flowers are beginning to bloom. It is a time when all our children are once again seen out of doors, running around riding their bicycles and planning the things they want to, do this summer^ Living out here in the country gives us parents a wonderful and safe feeling about our children. We do not fear as greatly that they may be seriously hurt or molested as we would if we lived in the city. So let us make our village a community we will be proud to live in. .To do this wfe must work together and cooperate in everything we do.
