The loss left us with a 3-1 conference record. T h e l o s s w a s t h e s e c o n d straight heart-breaker for John Steinbach, McHenry pitcher. In the last 13 innings pitched, J o h n h a s a l l o w e d o n l y o n e earned run. We have scored only two runs during this period. The Warriors pounded out 8 hits but couldn't score in the clutch. Barrington had only two hits both in the sixth inning. The game was played under threatening weather and frequent outbreaks of drizzle. It was a scoreless pitchers' duel Until the fifth when we seored our only run off Lahti. A f t e r t w o w e r e o u t , M o s s singled, advanced to second on a walk to Steinbach, and scored on Schaefer's double. Barrington went ahead 2-1 in their half of the- fifth or. a walk, an error by our third baseman, Roti, a wild pitch, and a throwing error by the catcher, Benson. They scored their final runs off Steinbach in the sixth as Thorp singled and Restz walked. A throwing error by Roti following a double steal j)aved the way for one run and the final ru?i scored on Hendee's double to the. left, fiejd corner. All four' of these runs were 1 unearned. The Warriors set up a scoring opportunity ir. the seventh b u t c o u l d n ' t p u s h t h e r u n s across. We loaded the bases w i t h n o b o d y o u t on M o s s ' single, an error, and a walk to Schafer. Thorp then relieved Lahti and got Smith to hit into a double play and struck out Benson to end the threat. Besides the fine pitching performance turned in by Steinbach, three players shared hitting honors with 2 hits apiece. Jack Schaefer, Ron Smith, and John Moss accounted for 6 of our 8 hits. Barrington has now beaten us twice and has a .3 won and 2 lost conference record. Zion-Benton comes to town on Friday, May 9, for our second encounter with them. We lost 6-5 at Zion in a closely fought non-conference game earlier in the, season. Zion features fine hitting and excellent pitching. Box Scores: McHenry: Schaefer, SS R. Remember, Sam Snead once had an eleven on a hole, too. Our golf season officially opened Tuesday, with forty four "DIVOT DOLLS" bravely facing the blustering cold winds. The first attraction was a Rabbit Tournament. All desiring to play golf put names in a hat. The names were then pulled out in pairs and those two golfers were partners for the day. Their combined scores were added» and then divided by two, the result being the score for each for the hole, with the handicap for each player bein^ bandied in the same manner. This brought o u t p l a y e r s w h o , h a d n e v e r played together • before, and turned out to be a very interesting match. The winners were as follows: 1st place, Bettie Rode and Gerta Weselius; 2nd place, Sully Consago and Irene Keim; 3rd place, Ilaverne Gregory and Alice Marion. Penalties for three-putt greens, or over, stuffed the "Kitty Cat Pot" to $2.80. Familiar scenes on the links these days -- Pearl Miller scooting around on a new colorful electric cart, which she manipulates in fine fashion -- even getting* over our familiar little bridges with no trouble. Third Straight Win In Conference Play; Claybaugh In Form jj, by Ron Smith Coach McCracken's varsity continued their dominance in conference f>lay as they defeated Dundee 5-1 at home on Tuesday, April 29. Dundee entered the game with a 2-1 record and one of the best hitting teams in the league with a .316 team „ average. A great pitching job was turned in by Tom Claybaugh in holding the Cardinals to 1 run and 5 hits. The victory enabled the Warriors to retain undisputed first jplace in the North Suburban race. - The Warriors pounded out 9 hits for their season's high thus far. The game was played in chilly weather and strong winds and was frequently halted because of blowing dust. Dundee took a 1-0 lead at the outset of the game. Fisher walked, stole second, and scored after Claybaugh threw wild on a sacrifice bunt. This completed their scoring foi*. the afternoon. This put runners on first and second and Schaefer scored on Ron Smith's hit to right field. This is very unusual for fish that are supposed to be "strictly bottom feeders." Lake Geneva anglers have had some wonderful smallmouth bass fishing since May 1. Soft shell crabs or nightcrawlers are the favorite live baits. As far as lures go, you have to rely on your imagination and old favorites. Bluegill fishing is getting better with every warm day.
