Quite a reversal ip the normal order of things was the fishing expedition that involved twin brothers, Jim and Jeff Michaels last Friday. The two young lads ran home to mother Lillian with the tale that their fishing* pole was swimming out into the lake! Mama tried to comfort the boys with tne promise that she would purchase a new one. Crying tears of woe, the twins insisted they wanted the old one back •v' -~Ll_ Deciding to investigate the mystery of the disappearing pole, Mrs. Michaels ran down to the beach and thought her eyes deceived her! The pole was truly SWIMMING AWAY! Into the water, jeans and all, went mamma to the rescue. When she finally retreived the pole, she discovered the boys had hooked a 21" carp! Quite a trophy and probably some k i n d o f a r e c o r d . Y e p , t h e boys are still fishing with the same bamboo pole. Of The Lake The women met Thursday night, May 8, in the beachhouse. Is it, as sometimes rumored, a secret society with designs against our government? Do its members really take an oath to destroy non- Catholic political power? If such rumors were true, the Knights of Columbus would not deserve the friendship and trust of non-Catholic citizens, which it invites and merits. Actually there is no more thoroughly patriotic organization than this fraternal" order of Catholic men. It is composed of plumbers and lawyers, farmers and doctors, business men and scientists--of Catholic men at every level of the social and economic scale. Some are rabidly partisan on political and public questions. They "choose up sides" with all the freedom of any other citizens. The Knights of Columbus was formed in 1882, by a small group of the men of St. Mary's Church, New Haven, Connecticut. They had met, at the invitation of Father Michael J. McGivney, not to form a national fraternal society, but to "render mutual aid to the members of the parish and their families." In the years that since have ensued, the Knights of Columbus has grown into a fraternal order of more than a million members, spread over the United States, Canada and other countries .of the Western World. But its purpose of "mutual aid",.. and its principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism . . . remain unchanged after more than 70 years. Millions of dollars hate been spent by the Order for the relief of victims of fire, flood and famine ... for the support of Christian youth work ... aid to Christian education. In both world wars, the Knights performed a service of ministering to the spiritual welfare and comfort of the armed forces regardless of creed, that brought sincerest thanks from a grateful nation. , Nearly one out of every sot Knights served his country in . World War II, and many laid down their lives. Despite these and many other signal demonstrations of its principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism, some people have the most absurd beliefs and suspicions about the Knights of Columbus, just as they do about the Catholic Church. Even today, misinformed people give publicity at times to a false alleged Knights of Columbus oath which has been proved to be fraudulent, and which scores df others have been forced publicly to admit is untrue. This message... and others explaining Catholic beliefs and practices .. are published by the Knights of Columbus so that our non-Catholic neighbors may judge us as we really are--not as we are often misrepresented to be. If you wish, we shall send you free, in a plain wrapper, an interesting pamphlet about this international society. Arid nobody wilf call on you.
