Most of all, thie Little League officers want you to be p r e s e n t < f o r t h e Grand Opener next Sunday. . Hold the press! Donald H. Schaefer of West Broad Street entered golfdom's hall of fame with a hole-in-one on the 18th h o l e a t McHenry C o u n t r y Club. 'Nuff said. Every golfer dreams of that, thrill.. Pony Leaguers ask us to report a hot 2 to 1 ball game in which the Sox beat the Cards. DeCicco allowed only 2 hits while Morenz allowed three besides hitting a home run. you need digging out; the best time to spar is before it's a bout. To remember your wife's birthday is good, to forget which one is better still. Stretch your capacities to the limit, they may be elastic. It's fun to watch the h^man race when it's time to .find a parking space. Anonymous Secretary Bart Yegge wants you players and fans to clip the schedule printed last week. He also tells us the diamond is in fine shape and that_ signs are being painted on the home run fence this week. Wednesday morning would have been a good time for us to get out of town. The Cubs won 12 to 4. The Yankees blasted our poor White Sox 13 to 0. We size it all up as a National League trick. The Milwaukee Braves made those Yankees mad last fall. . Every year when we get ready to order our World Series tickets the Sox bump into those "d" (not meaning dear or darling) Yankees. SHAMROCKS GIVE CRYSTAL LAKE FIRST SET-BACK Home Team Comes Up With 3 Runs In Ninth For 8-7 Win Harold Vycital, manager of the Viscounts Drum and Bugle C o r p s , was b e a m i n g a f t e r watching the performance of the boys and girls at McCullom Lake on Memorial Day. • The crowd was fascinated with the way this group conducted ^themselves. They are sons and daughters of Legionaires and Auxiliary members of McHenry Legion Post 491. Pretty snappy in those new uniforms. Believe it or not, we know an h o n e s t f i s h e r m a n . When Bill Burfeindt returned from the Ozarks, we asked him how big the fish were down thataway. He actually held up his hands to show us they were this big when we expected him to say that big. The Ozarks must do something to you. We haven't had a chance to check with Ernie Useman, nor do we know to whom we should credit the following sports clippings. They were handed in by a reader who wants to help us with S.I.H. news: "Vince Peterson drops us a note to inform- that Ernie Useman, Jr., is a member of the Illini frosh track team. Father Ernie still shares the Illinois 100-yard dash record with the :09.6 he ran in 1930, and was a-member of the record-settirig 440-yard relay team in 1930 which posted the Illinois varsity mark of :41.0. Two of the oldest Illinois records on the books are the 41 seconds flat in the 440 and the 17:-37.8 in the four-mile relays. The first was set in 1930 by Ernje Useman, Charley Dickinson, Jim Cave and J.-A. Paterson. The longer one was posted by Dean Woolsey, Bill Gould, Clarence Carrison and Paul Evans in 1931." We were Surprised to learn that Ernie Jr. made the Illini track team since we are sure he never competed in track while in McHenry High. And We didn't know the old boy himself was a track star in his day. It is nice to have such news handed in by our readeft*. Along about 5 o'clock on Memorial Day afternoon on the home ball field, the" McHenry Shamrocks were jumping up and down in hilarious fashion. Big Bob Nolan had just steam rollered around third and crossed the plate with the winning run for an 8 to 7 victory over previously unbeaten Crystal Lake. The Shamrocks went into their half of the ninth trailing by two runs. Peacock lost his control and walked Litwin, Jaskot and Nolan in order. Manager Joe Feffer brought in Lasberg, a southpaw, at this point to pitch to Nickels, a left-hander. Nickels looped a hit into left field and the runners were on the go. When Nolan saw Peacock having trouble in picking up the ball, he kept going for home. The throw was wide and the ball game was over. There was plenty of action leading up to that wild finish, but the details might be dull in comparison. Nolan and Jaskot each had a home run in leading a 13- hit attack on the part of the home team.--John Knox drew three bases on balls as leadoff batter. Chuck Pierce and Don Bentz each turned in good catches on long drives in the outfield to save trouble ir. the late innings. Hanson drove a tremendous home run past the scoreboard in centerfield to lead off the seventh for Crystal Lake. The visitors scored three runs in the inning and appeared to be on their way to - another victory. Then came that wild ninth! Little League Wet grounds postponed the Little League grand opening last Sunday and the program will now take place next Sunday, June 8th. The games will follow the regular schedule. To keep things clear to all the parents and boys -- this week the games are as follows : Sunday, June 8th: 1 p.m. - Cardinals vs. Eagles 2:15 p:m. - Introduction of major and minor league managers. Bob Frett, president of the Riverside Athletic Club,, will make a presentation in behalf of the club to McHenry Little League. Help Still Needed Last Friday four fathers were there to help us. Saturday a grand total of five fathers were present^ This, I am sure, is a very small percentage of fathers when we have 180 boys in our league. Can't you please give us 1 hour Thursday or Friday nite? Mayor George P. Freund had .5--ho.urs-^.time--last--Friday--to. i help us, even with his busy schedule, Thanks, Mayor. See you all Sunday for the opening. The Fox Valley Riders M/C held its regular meeting Wednesday night at DeYoung's farm and then left for Kazimour's Resort where the following meetings will be held until a more suitable meeting place is found. We are still looking for si, piece of land to lease or buy upon which to build a club house." The play seemed to be slowed up a bit at times as it was n o t uncommon to s e e many a foursome in a huddle peeling off hundreds dollars which was changing hands. Some of the girls won fabulous amounts and came in with quite a wad. Too bad it wasn't the real McCoy. The winners in Class A were Veronal Kerli; and Betty Wilkinson; Ciass B, Marge Thompson and Scooter Covalt and Class C, Edna^Mae Johnson and Lil Burns.' Next week, June 10th,'brings up o u r " F l a g Day" e v e n t . Looks like it will be a big affair as there are already 45 sirls registered. Remember each girl plays in her owA particular class... Cynthia Rourke, who hafe been the champion of the Junior Girls Golf Association for the past two years, came'ill with a 95 last Friday. Looks like she will be difficult to beat again this year. Good luck, Cynthia! The great difference between learning to drive a car and to play golf is that in one -ase you hit everything, and in the other you hit nothing. | See you next week? ST. Vern Block, secretary 4 Outdoors By Jack Walsh I^st Friday, Memorial Day, we took a few books of fishing licenses to some of the resort owners on Pistakee Lake. As we looked out across the lake it looked like every fishing boat on the Chain of Lakes was anchored off Coon Island. The only way "a fish could miss all those lures and baits would be if it were blind or at the other end of the lake. The crappie population of the Dutch Creek channels is really being cut to pieces lately. We have received numerous reports of catches exceeding 70. Ther£ are also gi few bluegilis spawning in these channels. Last week they were pretty fussy about hitting flies, but a small popper, worked very slowly, or with a tiny swivel to partially submerge it seemed to do the trick. Sunday afternoon we found ourselves on Lake Delavan. Our quarry: the wily walleye. Evidently they were too wily. We did not even have a strike. Well, anyway the bullheads were more cooperative. Every year we see more and more people bowfishing. We have given it a try and agree that it is a lot of fun. Some archers have been skewering quite a few carp and garfish in the Creek and other shallow inlets of the river lately. This is a real service to other fishermen. Carp and gars destroy a lot of gamefish spawn and should be cleaned out of the lakes and rivers completely. The Department of Conservation has been melting and trapping these "rough fish" for years, but* it seems to be an almost impossible task. Let every dawn of morning be to you as the beginning of life. The average life of motor vehicles has doubled since 1925. SHOP IN McHENRY OBITUARIES George Koerber George K o e r b e r , 7 3 , d i e d May 31 at St. Therese hospital, Waukegan.
