..tiP-.t THE McHENRY PLA1NDEALER Wednesday, July 2, 195*? JOHNSBURG IN 8-3 WIN OYER1 ELGIN V.F.W, Protect _ , „ L W* irt. , >> A EohA WaJkJt. jNever a deadline enters ;Never the editor tings, But someone thinks of somebe Etc. Yep, It's a short week. Deadline set up a day and somewhere in the distance we hear the voice of our old boss of so many years, "Mose", urging us gently, but firmly to get that copy in early. For the life of us we cannot think of the Fourth of July being so near at hand. Somewhere along the line we must lose time. Way back in school days when , the firecrackers faded away, the sudden " realization always came that the summer was going down hill and school bells would ring all too soon. But, of course, we had the County Fair to look forward to as the summer faded away. That was a deal! Guess it is a sign of old age to keep looking back to days gone by. While we are in this trance, A might be just as well to skip the present and look to the future. We are thinking of a pennant for the White Sox.- When the Washington Senators can whack the ball over the fence 10 or 11 times while our Sox are punching out singles in one series, it is time for loyal Sox fans to take action.^ We admire Manager Lopez as a fellow who can get along with ball players, but have a sneakin' feeling that he is the boy who traded away hitting for pitching. When Lopez managed Cleveland, he had four 20-game winners and still finished second. Being an old catcher and a good one, the Senor must still believe that pitching is 90% of your ball club. In modern day baseball you have to have fellows in the batting order who can plant that ball out of the park. Soft soap is sometimes used for shining diamonds in the rough. It's not the original, but the decor, that ups the ante more and more. 1 The next mile is- the only one that's still to be made. Anonymous TIGERS TAKE TWO VICTORIES FROM KENOSHA Gene Freund Goes 11 Innings 'To Win 3 To 2 Thriller by Lee Hiller Two very close games were played between the Tigersjand the Kenosha Chiefs last iweek with Johnsburg winning each by a run. In Wednesday night's game at Kenosha, it was Loren Freund who was the man on the mound. The boys managed to get eleven runs, which was n o t o n e r u n t o o m u c h , f o r when the game was called to a halt at the end of the seventh, they found they won by onl£ one run, 11-10. In Saturday's game, it was t h e l i t t l e r i g h t - h a n d e d G e n e Freund, who allowed only two r u n s , i n t h e h e r o r o l e . T h e game went eleven innings before the Tigers managed to push over the winning run for him. He had everything it took to stop the fine Kenosha ball club, which your reporter hears is among the best in the state of Wisconsin. It was a terrific game. It's too bad more of you folks weren't on hand to witness it. Dfck Hiller won the game in the eleventh with a triple, the only extra base hit of ,the game, down the left field line. He scored on a ground ball to the first.baseman by Tom Oeffling. SHAMROCKS WM BALL GAME FROM ALGONQUIN. 1-2 Hitters Back Up Litwin Pitching To Put Game On Ice If our observations are correct, 'twould seem that the time is ripe for McHenry fans to form a club and give that Sox front office some help. We car? pick out a dozen managers from our club who will all spend the entire season directing affairs for the combined salaries of Chuck Comisky and Senor Lopez. You see, we want to be reasonable as well as helpful. We take no responsibility for the following. It was handled in by a young lady of more than average intelligence, a keen sense of humor and a perfectly normal outlook on life. Algonquin nin£ here last Sunday as the second round of county league play got under way and won a decisive 8 to 2 victory. When lack of control put Lincoln in trouble in the second inning Litwin took over and breezed through with a 4-hit performance. The visitors picked up a run in the first without the necessity of a base hit. In the fifth they put across another lone run when Kreeger walked, Leitjert singled and Th^lander doubled. Four hits, including a twobagger by Denny Freund, and two errors on the part of the defense netted only two runs for McHenry in the second, but the boys took care of the run production later. Ten men went to bat for the home team in the sixth and four runs crossed the plate. They put across two more in the eighth for good measure. John Knox and Don Bentz were in the 3 for 5 class in leading a 14-hit attack on Algonquin pitchers. With the boys hitting as good as ever, it was short work to get young Terry Britz a lead to work on. They got three big runs in the first inning and were never caught by the Elgin Vets. Final score: 8 to 3. The second straight loss for the Vets in league play brought them down into a three way tie for first place. Fighting for the lead is Johnsburg, Richmond and th^ Elgin Vets, and it's a long way to the end'of the season. The big guns for the afternoon were Art Jackson, Lloyd Freund, and Clare Weir, each having a good afternoon with two hits apiece. Terry ijritz scattered four hits over the nine innings to stop the Vets in fine fashiop. Tuesday night the Tigers travel to Richmond for a practice game with Ray Miller's ball club. On July 4, the Tigers will njfeet Dundee in a league game on the home field. Then on Saturday they travel to Joliet to play the Statesville team. The Tigers look forward to this game with great enthusiasm because it is always a very good ball game and a lot of fun for the boys* On Sunday, the sixth,, they play the Richmond ball club in a league game on the Tiger ball field. It will be a real good game, so let's see a bjg crowd on hand. We hope to see you there again. We will probably never see those large crowds again until somebody finds a pot of gold and installs lights for night games. Just learned that the McHenry Shamrocks lost a 2 to 1 pame to Richmond one evening* recently. This was a makeup game and must have been a good one. Hodge held Richmond to three hits, but had a little trouble in the first inning after a walk and a hit batsman. Well, that one made Ray Miller happy anyhow. John Rourke was the winning pitcher, although Bill De- Cicco relieved him in the fourth inning. Zenner pitched for thfe Yanks. The game scheduled for Friday night was cancelled because the umpire failed to show up. In a scrimmage game played that night we understand some of the players didn't like the decisions of the umpires, who just happened to be their own ifathers. ' Sunday's game betweert the Braves and the Giants was a walk-away for'the Braves. The score was 16-2 with Bobby Gates doing the pitching honors and hitting, a. grand slam homer for t{ie Braves. Nice day's work, Bob, In his first role as a catcherJohn Corso turned in a professional job which made Louie Swedo mighty happy. Jack Adams got a*home run for the Giants. In the nightcap, the Cards defeated the Yanks, 12-6. Because of a shortage of Yankee players due to illness, Bill De- Cicco and John Rourke filled in and DeCipco got a grand slam homer. Tclo bad his dad can't get hina to do that for his own team. Morenz was the winning pitcher and little David Klapperich came through with his second home run of the season.
