GJBN6A CITY, WIS. m m, Important Points for Pipe Smokers 1. A pipe should be cleaned at least once every day. It should never be put away for any length of time without first cleaning the bowl, stem, and bit thoroughly. 2. When filling a pipe, be'gentle. Press easily from side to side, not down, since circulation of air is necessary between the particles of tobacco. 3. Fill the new pipe only half-way for the first 8 or 10 smokes. This starts the cake at the bottom of the bowl, contributing greatly to ultimate smoking pleasure. 4. Take plenty of time in lighting a pipe to make sure that the entire surface of the tobacco is burning. The pipe should be lit twice; the second time/it should stay lit. 5. jSmoke slowly. It will increase enjoyment of pipesmoking and lengthen the lfte of any pipe. This is especially true in the "breaking-in" period of either pipe or smoker. ' 6. Smoke each pipeful to the bottom, and allow the dry ash to remain in the pipe until it has cooled. Hot dry ashes absorb moisture and aid In building the cpke. 7. Fondle the bowl of your pipe. The oil in your palm brings out the grain, and overheating of the bowl will thus be immediately noticed. Never allow the bowl to get very hot. 8. Never scrape the inside of the bowl with any sharp instrument. Use a pipe reamer or dull-edged knife, and leave a thin layer of cake at all times. 9. Guard against a cake becoming too thick. It expands more rapidly than briar when heated, and may cause the bowl to split. 10. Before refilling a pipe, allow it to cool and make sure that the inside of the bowl is quite dry. 11. NEVER attempt to empty a pipe bowl by knocking it on hard surfaces. The best bowls and strongest stems were never made to stand this mistreatment. 12. For a sweeter smoke, let your pipe rest from time to time. Two or more pipes are a real economy in smoking enjoyment. V. COMPLIMENTS OF ' \ BOLGER'S DRUG STORE PIPE HEADQUARTERS 103 S. Green FOR McHENRY Phone 4ft- ARE SAFER Because of cHenry Hospital •J A Message of Special Importance to Families Who Vacation in McHenry Summer time is accident prone time. Boating, motoring, swimming, all sports, even the heat, add to the hazards. Your family is safer when you vacation in McHenry because of the 21 bed McHenry Hospital with its emergency room, staff of outstanding doctors and trained hospital personnel on call 24 hours every day. But a 21 bed hospital is a slim margin of safety. In July the hospital bed occupancy was 90%, a dangerous situation if some member of your family should need immediate hospitalization and all beds are full. 194 emergency cases were treated in the emergency room in July. Already year 'round citizens have faced up to this problem. A 30 bed addition has been planned. Architects' drawings of the addition are available for all to see. A fund raising drive was conducted last fall with splendid success. But we are short of the goal. We need help - Your Help.
