FORESTER BASKETBALL TOURNEY ENDS WITH FAST GAMES AND COLORFUL PROGRAM AT MCHS VJVW. Drum And Bugle Corps In Sharp Performance They did it again! The local C.O.F. court sponsored the state basketball tournament in the MCHS gym in highly commendable fashion as Forester teams gathered from many points in the State of Illinois. The finals last „ Sunday brought out a large crowd to witness' the championship games and the colorful closing night's program. As each portion of the wellplanned event unfolded during the past three weeks of the tournament, evidence of the magic touch of McHenry's ace promoter, Fred Meyer, glowed and sparkled in the background. But, it takes many willing hands to successfully carry through such a huge Undertaking after promotional sparks have started the fire. Those strong, brotherly hands were to be seen from the moment you entered the door until the last flicker of light waved good-bye for another year.v The program before the final game of the evening featured the colorful Drum and Bugle Corps of the McHenry V.F.W, organization. Snappy as you please in eye-catching new uniforms, the local group drew long and loud cheers from the crowd. Llyod Freimd Honored The State Court recognized Lloyd Freund for his continuous service as a "player and coach since the tournament started in 1947 and presented him with a beautiful Forester ring. Lloyd's competitive spirit has been a big factor in bringing championships to Johnsburg through the years and the recognition met with sincere approval. Always on hand to pick up any slack in, the program was the Carl Weber family at the organ. Remarks h§ard by your reporter from the crowd summed up that they "love" that music. Earl Duffy, State Chief Ranger, was eloquent and sincere fling, St. John 96 - Johnsburg; Cully, St> Gregory 650 - Chicago; Olson, St. Mary 594. Thrilling Start Let's look over the games in the order in which they were played Sunday. The first one was a real thriller as the Johnsburg Rangers staved off a fourth quarter rush by'Sobieske of LaSalle to emerge with a 40 to 39 victory. The second game was another hot one as the St. Marys Rangers beat St. Gregory lo to 34 in overtime. This one ended 32-32 in regular time. White's 21 points led the scoring in the third game as Virgil handed a good Hampshire team a 52 to 44 loss. The St. Gregory. Juniors proved too strong for Johnsburg in a 56 to 31. May picked up four baskets in the fourth quarter in a desperate effort against big odds. Steinback's 21 points led McHenryN to victory over Johnsburg 46 to 31 in the Ranger championship game. Bill Oeffling showed his skill in this one with 7 baskets and 2 for 2 from the free throw line. The crowd waited anxiously for the final game which saw the St. Mary's Seniors of McHenry roll along to a decisive 83-63 victory over a St. Gregory team that stayed right in the scrap until the; final second. With Bentz controlling the boards, the McHenry sharpshooters had the situation in hand most of the way. McHenry's second five saw plenty of action, but went back to the bench in the third quarter when the lead began to dwindle. : Then came the final awards, some handshakes artmnd the . gym--then "so long" to good They, did it agaipt St. Johns-Johnsbur^: Oeffling ••'4 Hettermann f v -1 • • Mangold '2T'; 3 Hiller 3 1 Freund • 3 ,0 3 Hettermann 3 0 Groh \ 0 /;<2. -- - ' 'i--.' 16 15 Sobieskl-LaSalle • , . However, the boys found their way out of tjie press in tlie last quarter to make it a fast and furious finish. ; Following the championship game, Coach Cliff Fulton, who has given- his time and knowhow toward bringing young players along, expressed his thanks,to the American Legion .coaches and all who have done sO much for this youth program.
