Page Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Tuesday, December 30/ 1951 Undefeated Varsity Basketball Squad Of M.C.H.S Christmas of 1958 is over and the old year is about to be .vritten into the records as just .a memory. Like the years before, old '58 gave us some high spots with a few set backs. The jolts must come lest we take our blessings for granted. Old Santa came to our house and was real 'generous. Guess it wouldn't lie right to complain that he left neither' a s o c k , n o r a t i e i n t h e w h o l e bundle. Suppose the Po£t Office boys wish'they could outlaw Christmas cards, but we got a big kick out of opening each one. The day before Christmas a. report went around that our post office crew had to call out the Red Cross for help. When sifted down it developed that Gertie Barbian (Mrs. Red Cross) gave the boys a hand. The Warriors will be back in action this (Tuesday) evening against Lake Forest, a team that was formerly in the North Suburban league. PARISH BASKETBALL TOURNEY FINALS NEXT SUNDAY, JAN. 4 IN McHENRY HIGH SCHOOL GYM St. Patrick Five Wins 44^42 Game From St. Mary's The McHenry High teams will travel to Grayslake for games on Saturday night of this week. These vacation time games: are non-conference, but scheduled to krep the boys sharp. I Of course, the varsity will be battling to retain that unbeat- j en record and will probably have to keep up the hustle to j get by both Lake Forest and i Grayslake. Pro football has forged to the front and won't be hurt a bit by that movie-script finish put on by the Baltimore Colts for the championship. The old comment in bowling matches . . . "Somebody is always bowling!" . . . seems very true this season. This w e e k we n o t e t h a t L e r i n i e Tlwnnes featured a 257 game in a whoppln' big .630 series. Be. ho had n smile that wouldn't como off. WhoopsLA specla] just came in to tell us that "Geno" Schaefer bowled a 655 series. And who is that Bob with a 253 -game for Hester Oils? You will want to see the windup of the "Parish Tourney" next Sunday and bet you will be surprised how some of those fellows can come back from basketball retirement and hold the pace. Of course, the grade school boys can run all night and will give you plenty of thrills. Now -for New Year's Eve! We bragged that we would dance that night, but haven't been able to throw the old cane away. Since we can't cut loose, we might as well preach Noma's ° at The Sixth Annual Parish Basketball Tournament got ! underway at the McHenry ! High School last Sunday. The tourney is sponsored by the 1 McHenry Council Knights of Columbus. In the fifst game in the I grade school division, the defending' champion St. Marys of McHenry downed a stubborn St.' Johns team from Johnsburg. The final score was 1 3 1 - 1 8 b u t T e d d y F r e u n d brought his St. Johns team to within two points of the defending champs at 20-18 about t half way through the final • quarter. Rex Hester, Gary Vy- ; cital and Roy Henry Miller started to hit to put the game out of reach of the gallant i Johnsburg team. i In the other semi-final game in the school division, St. ' Thomas of Crystal Lake used i superior height and balance scoring to down St. Patrick's ,35-11. St. Patrick's and St. John's , will play for third place at 6:45 ! p.m. next Sunday evening followed by the championship game between St. Mary's and St. Thomas. In the parish division. Butch Novak scored all ten of his points in the fourth quarter to lead St. John's to a 55-33 win i over St. Peter and Paul of | Cary. Balance scoring that ; found ten of the Johnsburg boys making at least one basket made the difference in the second half after a close first j two quarters. j In the first evening game in ; the Parish division, too much height gave St. Thomas of i Crystal Lake an easy win over i St. Mary's of Woodstock. Don | ! Sheehan had twenty points and 1 Joe Reading fourteen for the i ! winners. j | The final game of the eve- ! : ning turned out to be the best ! .game of the day as St. Pat-, rick's came from behind to . beat their McHenry neighbors, • | St. Mary's, 44-42. Jim Justen ; i paced the Irish with 14 points followed by Tom McMahon j ; with 10 but it was John Knox's | : two long shots after entering j | the game in the final quarter j that, sparked St. Pat's to victory. Art Beck with 16 points and Bob Hauser with 10 led 1st. Mary's and'along with Jim : Pinkstaff "turned ,jn outstanding games for the losers. Next Sunday, January 4, 1959, in the Parish Division, ; St. John's will meet St. Peter's of Spring Grove at 1:30. St. Patrick's will clash with St. 3:00. Either one will increase the solubility or creaminess and make finer crystals in the final product. Use 3 tablespoons of corn sirup | lukewarm, beat with a large or V\ teaspoon of cream of tar- | spatula or wooden spoon until tar in a recipe using 2 cups of j it crystallizes. Next knead it with your haifuS stick, then it's the right temperature. If you beat or move it unnecessarily before this time, it will have large crystals and be hard and dry. When it sugar and 1 cup of water. Mrs. Janssen gives these pointers for making the candy: Cook to the soft ball stage, or 239 degrees F. Don't beat it in the pan in which it's been cooked, and don't scrape the sides. Scraping will prevent the formation of fine crystals. Instead, pour the cooked candy onto a platter or cookie sheet, and let it stand undisturbed until it is lukewarm. If you lightly touch your finger to the candy and it doesn't until it's smooth. At first it may feel dry and crumbly. But if you've cooked it properly, the warmth and moisture in your hands will soon make it smooth and creamy. Wrap it in waxed paper and store in a tightly covered container to "ripen." Let it stand for at least twenty-four hou^s, but you may store it for as iico ^i as two weeks before using.
