This Business -- Farming Making-money with hogs or any other livestock for that matter depends almost entirely upon management and the ratio between the cost paid for feed and the price received for livestock at market time, according to L. J. Kortan, Animal Husbandman, South Dakota State college. Four of the most important management factors in swine production include: (l)FeedConversion: "Feed g-CHURCHSEMICES-i HJIIIIMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIH 7:00 p.m. Gospel Hour Wednesday-- 8:00 p.m. Prayer Meeting For other information, call McHenry 2448. "Christ is the Answer" required may vary from a low of 350 lbs. to a high of 500 lbs. of grain and protein to produce 100 lbs. of pork. (2V Pigs weaned per litter is the second important factor. Some farm operators wean and raise 8 pigs per litter; others wean and raise only 5. or less per litter. (3) Death loss after weaning should be held down to 1.5c'c or less of the total weight produced. (4) Marketing Procedure: Market when hogs have reached their best weight and before they become so heavy that their gains are no longer efficient. Remember -- good sanitation and health must always be considered along with the above reeommendat ions. Many swine producers have been asking, "How fast can I develop meat-type hogs by selective breeding?" The answer to this question is found in part from the studies conducted at the USDA experiment station (Beltsville, Md ). Their research indicates that in three generations, Duroe hoqs selected for • breeding because of their low fat decreased the backfat thickness of their offspring by 11 percent. Hogs of the same breed selected for high fat produced offspring with a backfat increase of 14 percent in the third generation. This research also shows that animals chosen with significantly less backfat than the herd average transmitted about 41 percent of that advantage to their offspring. On the other hand, animals chosen with more backfat than the average transmitted about 57 percent of this characteristic to their progeny. Tne apparent higher heritability of fatness compared to leanness, emphasizes the importance of careful selection in developing meat-type hogs. The report also shows at slaughter, the third generation Duroc hogs bred for leanness gave 3 percent more in yields of trimmed hams, loins, and shoulder butts than third generation hogs bred for fatness. Every 200-lb. Duroc marketed, third generation lean-lire p i g s a v e r a g e d 6 . 2 l b s . m o r e l e a n c u t s a n d 10 l b s . l e s s f a t cuts than fat-line animals. The fat line animals yielded 1.2 lbs. more bacon per pig.
