Fred J. Mueller wrote to tell us of. goings on in the sunny south. Joe Frett proposed tennis on ice. St. Thomas of Crystal Lake won the Parish basketball tournament -- 50 to 49 from St. Peter's. Jim Doran's grade school boys of St. Mary's took it in their division. Walter Warner showed up to talk baseball. The Warrior cagers upset Barrington in overtime 62 to 60. And they beat Dundee 56- 54. Along came Crystal Lake to beat McHenry for the county title 60 to 53. "S.I.H." had only one good leg "under him so Hon Smith continued to report MCHS games like a veteran. The Warriors beat Harvard and Woodstock. They edged Zion 46-44 in overtime, then followed with revenge on Libertyville 67 to 54. February Bill MeCarroll took some good action pictures for your sport page. Caught a good one of Jim Justen as. the Warriors beat Antioch 78-77. George Justen and Holger Pedersen had their tickets for opening day at Wrigley Field. Coach Jerry Kalk's MCHS wrestling team won the conference championship. Crystal Lake had the Indian sign on our Warriors. This time -- 60 to 45. Barrington beat us 75-65. The MCHS Sophs were looking real sharp. March Newspaper reports had it that Barrington "stopped" Denny Freund, star Wauconda athlete. He scored 25 points! The Warriors beat Lake Park 75-67 at the regional at Crystal lake. Joe Etten bowled a 286 game and was all smiles. Joe Frett was chosen president of the County Baseball League. Elgin's great size beat the Warriors in the regional, but not until the last three minutes of the game could they move ahead. The C.O.F. state basketball tournament was again played in McHenry and was a great success. April McHenry's Lodge No. 691 Loyal Order of Moose sponsored a well-attended banquet for grade school athletes. Cliff Fulton's talk went over big with the crowd; It was baseball time and the high school team started out with a 6-4 win over Woodstock. Jack Thomas, assisted by Jack Vick, took over Legion baseball management as Tom Bolger closed out a commendable career. The Riverside Athletic Club sponsored bowling for young people and tossed a party for them at the close of the season at McHenry Recreation. May Larry Stilling led his Sham rocks to a 5-2 win as they opened the season at Algonquin. Verona Kent started a popular golf column called "Divot Dolls." Our "Great Outdoors" col umnist followed the fortunes o f f i s h i n g a n d h u n t i n g f r o m season to season with great interest. Matt Eichinger qualified for the state finals in high school golf. Dick Weber struck out! Hans Behnke served up a "knuckler" for the third strike (a 16" ball). December Jack Justen bowled a 710 series. The Warriors beat Wauconda 77-48. Next came a victory over Libertyville, 86-79. VSonny" Hocin won the most valuable player award at the Kiwanis football banquet. Warriors 69 -- Crystal Lake 67 in overtime. Wow! Tfie Fulton boys still win. This time it is 66-64 over Barrington in double overtime. And a 62-61 win at Harvard. Strong finish gives Warriors 65-61 win at Zion. We must have missed some items, but 1958 is now past history. Schaefer had a hole-in-one at McHenry Country Club. Boys of St. Marys won the grade school softball tourney, defeating Junior high 16-8 in the finals. Cub fans were giving S.I.H. a rough time. Ed Doyle was one of the worst. Lee Hiller reported Johnsburg Tiger baseball and showed real enthusiasm. Terry Britz stopped the All- Stars as the Tigers won 12 to 7. July Pistakee Yacht Club news was featured under a special heading as your sport page expanded to cover all activities Several writers contributed to round out the local sport news. The Tigers made another trip to Stateville to play the prison team. Softball was very popular in McHenry. Night games drew large crowds. August Mickey Schaefer reported Shamrock games with play-byplay precision. Junior Freund took his son to see the Cubs play ball. Wanted the boy to see how big leaguers play the game. Cubs were clobbered. Athletic Director McCracken had a notice printed regarding sports in general and football in particular. Short summer. October Crystal Lake beat Johnsburg for the county league play-off championship. Crystal Lake beat our football Warriors 21 to 19;, at our Homecoming. Ron Creutz hit 'em hard, but it wasn't enough. The Warriors beat Dundee 14 to 13, then lost a tough one to Geneva. 20-19. MCHS Cross Country team was classy. November Getting near the end of the calendar year now so we may skip along faster.
