But when the kind of hay was pelleted and fed as the only feed, steers on test at the Dixon Springs (Illinois) experiment station gained up to l-\ lbs. a day. Pelleting hay is the same process of compressing feed into small, bite-sized bits that has been used for many years in preparing, supplements and, complete feeds. " ' The let of steers reported above, gained 1.73 lbs a day on peUeted hay compared with only 0.63 lbs..a day for a similar lot "pf steers fed the same hay baled. This hay was ajfalfa and % timothy. Pelleting improves the feeding efficiency of low-quality roushage more than high-quality roughage, according to R. J. Webb, superintendent of the research station. That is, it will pay a feeder more to pellet an alfalfa-timotny combination as the percentage of the timothy increases and the percentage of the alfalfa drops. Cattle feeders may be asking whether the increase in gains will pay the cost of pelleting? When the Illinois research workers figured the cost of pelleted hay at $30 a ton, the cost of gains was less than 14c a pound on the steers gaining 1^4 lbs. a day. The steers fed baled hay figured at $20 a ton were making gains of about lb. a day at a cost of more than seventeen cents a pound. Cost and gains were about the same with chopped and baled hay. The next step in pelleting is up to machinery and equipment manufacturers. Several companies are now working on the problem. The need is for a practical machine to fit into the feeder's or custom operator's plan of operation, and at a cost he can afford. Your local Illinois Feed association dealer agrees with Mr. Webb, in that as equipment is improved and costs come down, pelleting would appear to .show great promise. That's a tip from Mrs. Rita McGreer, University of Illinois foods specialist, who says electric frypans are handy for heating as well as cooking many foods. To bake a frozen pizza, put four layers of heavy-duty foil in the bottom of the frypan. Cover and preheat to 420 degrees F. Put the pizza on a greased pie pan or. if it is foil packed, bake it in the foil container. Bake 20 minutes, open the vent and bake 10 minutes longer or until done. Frozen tray or other quick dinners take to a frypan as easily as to an oven. Preheat the frypan to 420 degrees. Place the foil container with food on a low rack. Cover and bake for the time specified on the label. For baking frozen meat and poultry pies, place a double thickness of foil in the bottom of the frypan, allowing it to come partly up the sides. This will catch any juice that may bubble over. Cover and pre- I heat to 420 degree F. When the I indicator light goes out, place > the pies (packed in foil tins^ j directly on the foil. Cover and bake 40 to 50 minutes. Open j the vent for the last 10 min- j utes. To serve, invert the pies ! on the serving plate. ; Mrs. McGreer says the elee- I trie frypan is also handy to defrost frozen foods that you plan to prepare immediately. To do this, place an unopened package of frozen food on an in- • verted pie pan or rack in the ! frypan. Set the dial at 420 de- 1 grees F. Cover and leave for , 10 minutes. Turn package and 1 continue heating for another j 10 minutes. Prepare the foods ; at once or they will lose qual- ! >ty. I m IS1SIS8I i ^ : x., b<;f sw^ter than kisses for Valentines?
