(The following article of general interest appeared in the newsletter, the publication of the auxiliary of the Mclienry hospital.) It was interesting to find, while "delving" into facts about hospitals, that Benjamin Franklin was the first in this country to call a "consultation" of "friends and acquaintances." for the purpose of "studying the best means of relieving the distressed". The Bargain Saving Grand Opening of the Century Watch This Paper For The Big Day was the charter approved in May. 1751. for Pennsylvania ha-pital in Philadelphia. Mr. Franklin did the first job of "public relations" for. a hospital. From that day t'.> '.his, public relations .personnel have been trying to sei' th"» public on tiie idea that a hospital is not only desirable but vital and indispensable. It has required reams of paper to sell the public on the idea that hosp: tals are in constant need of funds to keep operating efficiently. Almost before equipment is pa id for. it is worn out or outdated. Almost before the last bed is occupied, the need for expansion exists. With the evergrowing migration from the city to subuibun communities, the hospital in the lural area has had to deal with the many problems of this mass migratory movement. In a community such as ours where the river, the lakes, the wonderful opportunities for outdoor recreation, all point up the need for hospitals within emergency availability, w i t h equipment and personnel uif ficient to satisfy the public when illness or disaster enters the home, as it does to you and to me and to all of us. The members of the hospital auxiliaries are in the most strategic position to make the public conscious of the many needs of the hospital. So. in the final analysis, we are all public relations emissaries.
