F. Cravens, passed away at Spirit Lake, Iowa, March 22. Following their annual custom, McHenry Council Knights of Columbus will sponsor an Easter dance on Monday everiirfg April 12. Music will be furnished by Sherman's orche^ a of Woodstock and supper will be served in the basement dining hall by the ladies of the Altar and Rosary of St. Patrick's church, at 35 cents per plate. , , From the happenings of twenty-five years ago comes the news that the steamer, "Mary Griswold," will make her first trip of the season to the#dakes today (Wednesday) ancrwill, for the present, make regular trips every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, leaving McHenry at 5:15 p.m. The Willing Workers society of the Universalist church will give a supper at the Universalist church parlors on Friday evening, April 16, commencing at 5 p.m. and continuing until all are served. Hot biscuits anittmaple syrup will be the attraction and the charge will be 25 cents a plate. Extensive improvements are being made in the J. W. Freund business block on the West Side. Office rooms are being made over the G. W. Besley drug store, and when completed will be occupied by Dr. R. G. Chamberl in--popular--West--Sidedei^ st. The block will also be besratified by a new plate glass front. Hanly Bros., having leased the canning factory formerly owned by the McHenry Canning company, will operate same this season, and are now ready to contract for corn and will pay $6 per ton for same. FORTY YEARS AGO Taken from the files of March 27, 1919 The wishes of our theatregoing public are to be granted the coming summer, when this village is to be given a new show "Rouse, which is destined to nae one of the largest and most up to date in the county. J. W. Smith, who during the past several years has been manager of the Central Opera House, is the man behind the gun and according to well formulated plans work on the new structure will begin next week. Joseph Buss, one of McHenry's old and highly respected ci1$?ns, and station agent at Terra Cotta for many years, passed away at his home on John street, Sunday at the age of 76 years. From Ostend comes the following item. We wish the road grader could do some work on the road running south from Ostend corners. E. D. Wallis hauled bricks when the roads wpffq soft, and there are ruts neffly deep enough to bury the old fellow. We will keep hoping to see the grader on them. The kids have been having all sorts of fun during the past week, searching for crawfish in the rocks just below the water gates in the mill pond dam. Large numbers of "crabs" have been caught and disposed of. A number of our people ha# found them fine eating, while others use them for bait for the larger species of the finny tribe. A slight increase in railway passenger service rates becomes effective on the C.&N.W. railway March 15. The fare between McHenry and Crystal Lake, for instance has increased from 21 to 24 cents. W. F. Vogt, West Side druggi^ T announces that the tennis court in the rear of his residence on Main street is being placed into first class condition and with favorable weather conditions should be ready for play by next Sunday. The old Slocum farm of 90 acres, bordering on Slocum Lake, has been sold to a New York man at a reported price of $45,000. Easter specials at Barbian Brothers include: Fresh asparagus, 2 lb. bundle, 25 cents; crackers, 15 cts per lb.; large grapefruit, 5 cts. each; green tea, Ms lb. pkg; 23 cts.; stewing hens, 20 cts per lb.; butter 25 cts per lb. aind ham, 17 cts. per lb. ADULT SCOUTS The Adult Girl Scouts of Valley View Neighborhood held their March meeting at the Legion home in McHenry. The colors were presented by Mesdames Bjirne Skjorestad, Charles Fox, Albert Adams and Albert Steinbiss. Mrs. Frank Gans, chairman, announced that the North District service institute for organizers would be held on April 8 from 9:30 to 3 in Pilgrim hall of the Congregational church, 461 Pearson street, in Crystal Lake. Girl Scouts were well represented on Girl Scout Sunday. Each girl attended the church of her choice, sitting in a group with adult leaders and fellow Scouts. Our community has probably noticed the cookie sale posters placed in various store windows by two sixth grade troops of McHenry. Intermediate and Brownie Scouts have been busy taking orders for cookies and nuts this past week. Isn't it grand to run into somebody who not only looks bright, but is bright?
