It was a very impressive meeting with co-workers and visitors from Antioch, Batavia, Belvidere, Barrington, Berwyn, Chicago 89, Des- Plaines, Downers Grove, De- Kalb, Glen Ellyn, Elmhurst, Harvard, Mooseheart, McHenry, Portage Park, Matoon, Rockford, St. Charles and Woodstock. There were also members of the Loyal Order present, 163 persons in all. Imogene Ruckstuhl, introduced all the high officials, such as the Pilgrims (of which there were four present, two from Portage Park, one from Rockford and one from Crystal Lake, which is the highest office in the Loyal Order; the Grand Council of; the Women of the Moose; the Dean of College of Regents; the Dean of Academy of Friendship and the Deputy Grand Regents, past and present. There were fifty-three college of regents present and what a beautiful sight to see. Three candidates were initiated, two were sponsored by Rachel Lomasnay, the junior graduate regent, and one sponsored by Evelyn Kingsley, the senior regent of the Crystal Lake chapter. The reason is that during the winter months, rubbish and other combustible materials have accumulated and the danger of fire has multiplied. In emphasizing the need for a spring clean-up campaign, the National, board of Fire Underwriters which has long encouraged this movement, points to the benefits accruing. For instance: The home is a healthier and more cheerful place after a thorough cleaning. Removal of rubbish from home, garage and yard minimizes the danger of fire and disease. The value of the homeowner's property increases, as does that of his neighbor and the communiity in which he lives. Industry benefits in many ways, chiefly because: Employees are more contented and interested in their jobs when working in a plant where the grounds are beautifully kept and where the interior is clean, light and fresh, and where no fire hazards exist. Any examples set by plant management is likely to be copied at home. There is little to criticize in healthy, beautiful and fire-safe surroundings, whereas dark work-rooms and dirt provoke bad tempers and inefficiency, and accumulated rubbish causes many fires. This Business - Farming "Egg prices will be 2 cents to 5 cents lower from March through September, 1959, compared to the same period in 1958. Prices for the last three months of this year will probably show no improvement over last year's. Net returns to turkey producers for the 1959 crop will be about the same to slightly less than last year. Lower production costs will partly offset the expected lower prices next September through December, as compared to a year earlier. U. S. farm broiler prices, April through June, will average between 16 cents and 17 cents. There will be little or no price rise later this summer." Egg prices during the next two or three months will likely decline from late February 'evels. April-June U. S. farm prices will average about 31 cents a dozen, five cents below the same period of 1958. July- September prices will be about 36 cents, two cents below the same months of last year. Prices during October-December will probably show no improvement over last year's 38 cents average. Egg production in the first half of 1959 will be about 3 per cent above the same period a year ago. Egg supplies in the last quarter of 1959 will be above those a year earlier. A cut of 10 per cent in the spring hatch would be required to hold October- December egg supplies to year eariier levels because of the record late 1958 hatch, the younger flock and the continued increase in rate of lay. It is anticipated that the spring hatch will be down 5-8 per cent from a year earlier. As for turkeys, net returns to producers from the 1959 turkey crop will be about the same or slightly less than last year. Prices during the September- December period are expected to be slightly lower 'than the 23.5 cent average of 1958. Lower costs for poults and some turkey feeds will partly offset the expected lower turkey prices. -Total--pounds--of-- turkey--for the holiday marketing period of September through December are expected to be 3 to 4 per cent larger than in 1958. Farmers reported in January that they expected to raise 5 per cent more turkeys in 1959 than in 1958--3 per cent more heavy breeds and 16 per cent more light breeds. The heavy breeds dominate the holiday supply. On Jan. 1, there were 14 per cent heavy breeder hens than a year earlier in the important north central states. Also, current prices for heavy toms are substantially higher than a year ago. Both factors indicate that the expansion m heavy breed production may be greater than indicated in producers' January intentions. It appears that storage holidays at the beginning of the heavy marketing season will be no larger--possibly smaller-- than a year ago. U. S. farm broiler prices for April through June will average between 16 and 17 cents. This is 3 to 4 cents below the same quarter of 1958. Market supplies for the quarter are expected to be nearly 15 per cent greater than a year ago. July through September prices are likely to be about the same as during the April- June quarter. This assumes May-July placements will average 38 million chicks weekly in the 22 reporting states. This rate would be 10 per cent greater than a year ago. Demand for broilers usually increases to reach a summer peak. This normally results in increasing prices. FIRE CAUSES DAMAGE Fire caused by a flooded floor furnace in the John Losch home at Griswold Hills, near Griswold Lake, destroyed much of the floor and caused a great amount of smoke damage about 11:45 Wednesday morning.
