Thurs., April 23 -- McHenry at McHenry Recreation with a 279 game. The boys were pulling for a perfect game. George Rodenkirk bowled a red hot 667 series the same night. the Buss Motors team at the Palace showed em how to pick up the 3-10 and 5-10 spares. \ each and drove in one run l each. Ron Creutz and, Ron ! Smith contributed the other two hits. Tom Claybaugh started arid finished the game and pitched fine ball for an opening game. He struck out 4 and walked 5, but allowed only 7 hits and 3 earned runs. The Warriors drew first blood in the very first inning as Jack Schaefer singled through the box and the centerfielder. Field, let the ball go through his legs. Speedy Jack took full advantage and circled the base paths to score on a 3-base error. Crystal Lake bounced back in their half of the opening frame to tie the score at 1-1. The lead-off man, Oberlin, was hit by a pitch but was picked off at first by Claybaugh. Then Berg singled, the next batter was hit by a pitch, and the j bases were loaded when Roti dropped a possible force-out ! play from Schaefer. The next J batter forced the runner at | home on a ground ball to | Schaefer, but Hoffman singled i to left, scoring Crystal Lake's first run before the side was retired. In the top of the second, after two out, Moss singled final threat before bowing. With one out, a walk, a single, and another walk loaded the bases. Coach McCracken pulled in his outfield «and it proved a wise move as Hall lined to Smith in center which would have been a hit had the outfielders been playing normal positions. Claybaugh struck out Baer on three pitches to end the threat and sew up McHenry's lii'st 1959 victory and start them off on the right foot. As you can see, the game was marked by numerous strike-outs, walks, passed balls, wild pitches, and other fundamental errors which usually mark the first game of the season. There just isn't the opportunity to get organized due to the weather and oth£r factors, but everything concerned, we're satisfied with the game, and very pleased and fortunate to win it. Barrington had previously beaten Woodstock 16-0 by pounding out 17 hits but McHenry's John Steinbach pitched a beautiful ball game and held them to 3 hits and no earned runs. John struck out 4 and walked only 2. He retired the side in order on three different occasions, the second, fifth and sixth innings. It was a well-played and tight ball game throughout the afternoon; Both' teams played heads-up ball except for two errors that let each team score a run. Bill Oeffling made the play of the day with a tremendous diving stab of a low liner in left centerfield. Jack Schaefer led the hitters with 2 for 2 including a double and he scored both Warrior runs. Ron Smith drove in one run with a hit and Dan Sompel collected the remaining McHenry hit. Douglas, Moore, and Hendee collected the three Broncho safeties. Mac's jnen broke into the scoring column in the third as Schaefer led off with a single and proceeded to steal second base. Jack advanced to third when Roti grounded out and stayed there as Oeffling went down swinging. Ron Smith then singled to center, driving in Schaefer and giving McHenry a 1-0 lead. We scored our winning run in the fifth as Schaefer this time led off with a double. Roti flied out and Oeffling walked. R. Smith then popped up to short, but when the third baseman. Miller, let Peterson's grounder go through him, Schaefer scored from second. Creutz struck out to end the rally. Barrington spoiled John's shutout in the seventh inning by scoring an unearned run. Reetz walked and Douglas singled to lead off'the inning. Lohti, the pitcher, advanced both runners to scoring position on a perfect sacrifice bunt. Moore then sent a short fly to Moss in right field whose throw held the runners at second and third. Schaefer then threw low 'to Peterson at first on a ELM THEATRE WAUCONDA, ILLINOIS Children (Under 12) 25t Open Daily at 6:40 Continuous Sundays From 3:00 P.M. FREE PARKING - 125 CAR'S!
