Bad weather apparently held down pro- 'i^tion nnd marketings. But climbing costs of feed have trimmed profits of egg producers. Anji profits may be shaved further in coming weeks and months as production increases'. On Jan. 1 the nation's laying flock included 326 million hens, five million more than m? year before. In addition, there were thirty-six million pullets not yet of laying age, also five million more than last year. Thus, the number of both hens and pullets totaled 362 million, about three percent more than the year before. Rate of lay was the some as last year, but it is expected to rise above year-before levels during the spring months.^The rate of lay has increased almost every year for many years.) Declining prices for eggs and continued high prices for feed will make for shorter profits from now through spring than in 1958. Farmers usually respond to this situation by buying fewer replacement chicks. The big-scale poultrymen of today do not respond so much as did farmers of several years ago. But enough of them do respond to make a fairly regular two-year cycle in egg production and prices. The egg production year begins and ends in late summer, when old hens "lay off" and before pullets come into production. Last year, 1957-58, was a good year. This year, 1958- 59, is supposed to be a poor one. If it is, the next egg production year, beginning next fall, should be better. Broilers. Recent prices for broilers were lower and feed costs higher than those of the year before. Few, if any, producers were making profits, but they continued to take 12 to 15 percent more chicks than last year. Prices went up a little after the holidays, but profits from growing the birds will remain close to 0. Still, the industry uses lots of corn and soybean meal, provides much employment and supplies our population with tasty, nutritious and economical food. Turkey production to increase. United States turkey growers plan to raise 5 percent more turkeys in 1959 than they raised last year. That is according to intentions reported to the USDA in a recent survey. Other signs also point to increased production. Last October, farmers producing turkey hatching eggs reported intentions to have 11 percent more breeders. And by Dec. 1, 9 percent more breeder turkeys had been tested for pullorum. Are some Illinois producers being squeezed out? They reported that they intended to cut production by 2 percent this year. Homemaking Tips To some homemakers, a "small electrical appliance" is merely a piece of equipment that can be plugged into an electrical outlet and that is fairly easy to move from place to place. Eloise Lorch, University of Illinois household equipment specialist, however, explains that small appliances fall into the two main groups: heatproducing equipment and motor- driven equipment. Heat-producing equipment includes fry pans, deep fat fryers, coffeeniakers, irons, waffle bakers, and electric griddles, electric ' saucepans and electric sheets and blankets. Motor-driven equipment in-- eludes such appliances as mixers, vacuum cleaners, fans, floor polishers, knife sharpeners and can openers. Miss Lorch points out that heat-producing appliances (especially thermostatically controlled ones) use more electricity during operation than motor- driven ones. Therefore, if you are using close to the capacity of the electric circuit in your home, you'll be more likely to blow a fuse if you turn on an electric frypan than a mixer or a fan. . . • - In general, heating appliances with thermostatic or temperature controls require about 1,- 000 watts, while many motordriven appliances, such as a portable mixer, require about 100 watts. But there's something else to remember. When first started, a motor-driven appliance uses many timas as much current as is indicated on the name-plate. So there's danger of blowing a fuse if you are using several motor-driven appliances on the same circuit and turn all of the motors on at the same time. Before buying any type of small electrical appliance, Miss Lorch suggests that you check these points: 1. Choose a model made by an experienced manufacturer with a good reputation. 2. See that both the appliance and its cord have .the underwriters Laboratory seal of approval. Tnis UL label indicates that the appliance has passed certain safety standards. 3. Read the instructions and save the guarantee. And be sure to mail the registration card to the manufacturer. » THIS BUSINESS FARMING Quality eggs mean profits to poultrymen. You may be using excellent feed and layers but still you don't market eggs. If that is the case--then question your own management in handling the eggs. You can't put extra quality into eggs--it "takes a good egg to start with. But even if an egg has perfect quality, it starts to deteriorate right after it is laid. What is egg quality? Quality eggs have ia sound, clean shell free of meat spots, biood spots, bacterial infections of visible germ development. The air cell of a grade A egg is small -- not over twoeighths of an inch deep. It should have a smooth, even outline or edge and should be without movement when twirled before the candle. The white should be firm an£ clear, permitting little movement of the yolk from the center when the egg Is twirled. Here are some management "secrets" offered by your IFA feed dealer which will help you cash in on the ever-increasing demand for quality eggs: 1. Confine your hens to a laying house. This way you can control the feed and produce yolks of a uniform color. 2. Clean litter and„nests are extremely important as they help reduce the number of dirty eggs. 3. Gather eggs three or four times a day. This gets eggs away from the heat of the heris on the nests. ' 4. Cool the eggs as soon as possible. The sooner the heat can be removed from the eggs, the longer they'll keep their quality. 5. Time, temperature and humidity have much to* do with keeping egg quality. Keep egg room temperatures between 40 and 60 degrees F. and humidity of 75 percent or more.
