Pag* Four T*E McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, April 23. 1959 U/a&tJi. Came down to work so early this morning that our "Orange Shamrock" operator accused us of disturbing the birds fronr their slumber. Right up we went to write up a line or two or three about the tj.A.A. all-star basketball games to be played in flrte big gym at MCHS Friday night of this week. First game starts at 1 p.m. Frosh vs. Sophs Juniors vs. Seniors Anybody who has ever seen these girls',games will want to be there. You, too? STREAKS UPSET WARRIOR NINE 2 TO 0 MONDAY Now, let's not forget to lend our support to the Pony League. The V.F'.W. boys are giving the organization a big boost with another party Saturday night. Sure-you can sit back and say, "they won't miss me." 'Taint so. Everybody has to help if these youth programs are to succeed. Lee Hiller has a story on the Johnsburg game last Sunday and tells you about next Sunday. The Shamrocks lost a 3-2 practice game to Woodstock, but the report hasn't reached us at this point. The County League schedule has been promised to us, but it must have been sent out by way of Milwaukee. Should have it by next week. Anyhow, we are told the Shamrocks will open at Dundee next Sunday. The big bowling score of the Old Bridge team was omitted last week when all bowling scores were yanked for lack of space. Our ears have stopped burning and our make-up artist will be sure to get the report in this week. The hottest bowling we have noted this year looms up on the score sheet of the Old Bridge team as they rolled up a score of 3071 (including a total 72 pin handicap). Game totals were 921-1020-1130. In that rousing third game they hit 'em this way: T. Sutton, 224; J. Larkin, 257; P. Overton, 178 (his low game in a big series);.M. Crouch, 244; G. Kinsala, 203. A 670 series by Crouch and Larkin's 641 wer* tops. Met a stranger the other night who was carrying a shaggy little puppy in his arms. "I give up!" exclaimed our stranger, "My wife went into a pet shop in Waukegan to buy some bird seed and came out with this." We love people. "Muggs" splashed a lot of green paint on the front of his store and announced he is out for the Irish trade. DAILY PINUPS: Marriage is much like a game of cards, wherein they start with a pair, he flashes a diamond, hearts is trump and they end up with a full house. Charity to some is just a contribution; to some others it consists of a loving sacrifice. Fun is not a frivolous waste of time but a friendly gift to happy living. An ultra - modern home is sometimes one that gives you half the room for twice the money. By Ronnie Smith Tony Roskie's Woodstock Blue Streaks came to town last Monday afternoon and proceeded to hand the Warriors their first conference defeat of the year by a score of 2-0. It was a heart-breaking loss for John Steinbach, McHenry pitcher, who pitched a beautiful ball game only to lose on unearned runs. John gave up only 2 hits (none until fne sixth inning) while striking out 10 and walking only 3. He had great stuff. and good control, but as has happened before, his mates just couldn't get the hits at the key moments. Coach McCracken's Warriors pounded out 7 hits (ironically. our high for the season) and threatened on various occasions, but just couldn't seem to bunch the hits together. Every starter except Creutz and Steinbach had 1 for 3, including Peterson's double to leftcenter. Woodstock's pitcher, Russ Bentsen, pitched a fine game also. He did not issue one walk which is a rarity in high school baseball while striking out 6. Brown and Hucks had the Blue-Streak hits, both in the sixth inning. McHenry's biggest threat came in the sixth inning. Schaefer and Roti both made outs to start the inning, but Moss followed with a sharp s i n g l e t o c e n t e r f i e l d . R o n Smith then singled to rightfield and when the rightfielder made a terrible throw, both runners advanced to second and third. Peterson popped out to kill the rally. Woodstock got one charity run in the first inning. After one out, Ward walked and stole second base. He went to third on a passed ball and then scored on a passed ball. We coudn't give it to them much easier than that. | In the sixth, Hucks singled and was safe at second when Roti dropped the ball oft a nice throw by Creutz trying to nail down the runner attempting to steal. Bentsen and Schultz were retired but Ward was hit by a pitch and Brown singled to left, scoring Hucks from second. This made the score 2-0 which turned out to be the final margin. In order to keep alive in this race, our hitting is going to have to come through, especially in the clutch. We have good pitching and fairly good defense, but the hitting is the question mark. Defensive play cost us this game, but that hasn't been the weak spot in previous contests. Zion and Dundee are other opponents this week. The Z-B's boast one of the best teams in the conference while Dundee seems rather weak. EAST TROY EDGES TIGERS 4-3 AS COLD HALTS GAME By: Lee Hiller On Sunday, April 19, the Tigers of J.ohnsburg played their first home game of the year. It was too cool for baseball but it was a good match from the first pitch. Young Gene Freund was the starting pitcher. He , ailowod only four hits and 6ne run in his four inning stint. Loren Freund hurled the last three innings and allowed five hits and three runs. Lloyd Freund had a good day at bat with two of the four Tiger runs. All of the boys had their turn at swinging and the game gave <!6oth managers a chance to see what they had from the hitting stand point. Next Sunday, Johnsburg will be at Crystal Lake for the season's opener. Box Score Being able to get your point across without stabbing anyone iff real tact. ' --Anonymous. FOX East Troy, Wis. The biggest catches reported were taken from Redhead Lake and Meyers Bay. One of the main things to remember when fishing for bass is to be consistent. If you don't get a strike on the first cast into a good spot, try a few more. Old mister bass may not take bait because he is hung"kry. but just out of plain irritation. Some of the best walleye fishing to be had in many years is available this spring in the Wisconsin River near the Dells. Coach McCracken's varsity Warriors made it three conference victories in a row as they downed a strong Libertyville nine 4-3 in a home game. The win enabled McHenry to hold down undisputed first place in the North Suburban league race. Ron Smith got 2 of the team's 5 hits and scored 2 of their runs. Jack Schaefer, Ron Creutz and Danny Sompel got the remaining 3 hits. Claybaugh started, but needed help from Steinbach iri the fifth. Steinbach finished the game and was credited with the victory, his second against no losses.v McHenry scored 2 runs in our half of the second inning. Ron Smith led off with a single and stole second base before Peterson flied out to left. Ron Creutz walked and Sompel singled, filling the bases. Smith scored on a, passed ball and Creutz scored when Schaefer walked with the bases filled. Roti popped out to end the inning. Libertyville pulled into the lead by scoring 3 runs in that disastrous fifth inning. Three straight walks by Claybaugh loaded the bases with nobody out. One run scored on a fielder's choice and two more came in on a hit to left by Ron Curry. Wildcat third baseman. Steinbach came in and Curry was eventually retired trying to score on a wild pitch, Creutz to Steinbach.
