A $500 scholarship fund to train another teacher for the educable mentally handicapped children of McHenry county has been set up by the McHenry County Federation of Women's Clubs. Special education courses to train a teacher for this classroom require two summer sessions costing $250 each. The project originated in April of 1957, under the guidance of Mrs. Walter P. Howard of Crystal Lake, who was president of the county federation at that time. Mrs. F. Vaughn Jones of McHenry was named chairman of a special project to raise funds to help handicapped children. Each local unit of women's clubs in the (^unty has been carrying on special fund raising projects to provide the $250 scholarship money needed for the second year of teacher training. The Illinois Council for Mentally Retarded Children had have its seventh annual state convention in Springfield May 1 and 2. Attending from McHenry county were Mrs. Dale Healless and Mrs. Harry Davidson, secretary and treasurer of the McHenry County Association for Retarded Children. They went in a chartered airplane, through the courtesy of Arthur T. Gait, Jr., for the Friday afternoon session. The McHenry county parent group organized in October, 1958, and invites parents and friends of the mentally retarded to join with them in their drive to overcome the problems of acceptance of the retarded, and to keep informed on current developments in education, health, welfare and legislation relating to this group. FIND STOLEN BIKES ' Hidden under a bridge on Rt. 12, at the entrance to Pistakee Highlands were five bicycles in various stages of dismantling, found last week by Mrs. Martin Rogde, a resident of the area. The sheriff's office last month recovered several bikes taken in the vicinity and three were returned to their owners. Receives Cap MILK DAY Announcement was made this week by Mayor Ronald Morris of Harvard that the city's eighteenth annual Milk Day celebration will be held Saturday, June 6. The mayors' milking contest, delayed a year because of rain in 1958, will occur at 11 o'clock in the morning, with finalists vying for the crown of champion milker during the afternoon festivities. HURT IN ACCIDENT William Lenz, of the Island Lake community suffered a concussion and lacerations as the result of an accideht on Rt. 176 Friday evening. He has been a patient in McHenry hospital. Also injured, but less seriously, was Robert Nellis, 17, of Island Lake. Their car went out of control and overturned as they were driving west. Deanery Holds Open Meeting On Wednesday evening, May 6, the McHenry Deanery Council of Catholic Women held an open meeting. All Catholic women of the McHenry d<^iery were invited to attend. Wie meeting took place at St. Margaret Mary rectory hall in Algonquin, with benediction at 7:45 p.m., followed by the meeting at approximately 8 p.m. Mrs. R. G. The McHenry deanery bake sale held recently in McHenry by the women of St. Mary's parish was a huge success. Proceeds of the sale will be turned over to Father Hubert McGinn for the Newman Foundation at the Northern Illinois university in DeKalb. April 16.
