McDonald's Celebrate ' Twenty Years In Business A large crowd assembled at Jean and Hugh McDonald's establishment to participate^, in festivities marking their twentieth anniversary in business. Mr. and Mrs. McDonald's were frequent visitors at the hoi^ of Mr. and Mrs. John Cain (the present Don Fluger resident). They had their eye on the place of business owned by Bruno Barth. On May 2, 1939, the McDonald's made the: purchase and took over. Those were truly the early days of McCullom Lake when there were only about fifteen permanent families, including Mr. and Mrs. Steve Huska, the Bill Schlitts, Marge and Dave Reid, Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Mc- Kim. Irene and Leo Sales, the George Kiddelsons, and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Schmitt to name but a few. The rest of the cottages, (and.not many of those!) were owned by summer people. The community has changed from a summer resort to a village that encompasses more than 300 families! Old timers will recall Hughie's dad, Cornelius McDonald who made his home with the couple until his passing. Edward Keegan was also a familiar sight. He worked for them until he passed away in 1940. Jean and Mac have truly watched McCullom Lake grow up and here is wishing them the best in their future years. Little League The first meeting to organize a nucleus of coaches,, managers and officers for our own little league was held at McDonald's on Tuesday, Apr. 28. The territory will include all young lads ages 8 through 12 from Lake wood subdivision, the village of McCullom Lake, West Shore Beach and Lakeland Park. Congrats To Grandparents Elsie and Clayt Nelson announce with pride the arrival of their first mutual grandchild. He is Scott Alan, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Donald Nelson of Battle Creek, Mich. He made his appearance on Thursday, April 21 and tipped the scales at 7 lbs. 11"oz. It is the first child, for the couple who nave been married 7 years. Sincere congratulations to grandma, grandpa, mom, and pop. A Poor Excuse Is better than none at all! Since the advent of the summer temperatures, all the youngsters are dreaming up ideas on how to go swimming. Most parents are of the theory that it is too early. Miss Diane Bjork took matters into her own hands on Saturday when she went horseback riding with some chums. It seems as though while the young equestrienne was astride her nag, she took him to a spring for a drink. After all, it was a mighty hot day. Apparently the water felt so good to Limpy, he simply laid down in it! Yes, Diane was still on his back. She, too, felt the cooling effects of the stream. She was soaked! She said it felt good. Mother Berenice took it all in stride and no punishment was meted out. 'Twas a purely innocent accident. Now top that-vpne if you can! ^ Cullom-Knoll A meeting was held on Sunday afternoon m the beachhouse. A committee was selected for the upcoming Memorial (lay parade. M rs. Theresa Schultz was again named chairman. It is with pride that we can announce the fact that a brand new modern flag--complete with fifty stars will be flown from the mast. The flag is being purchased and presented by the ladies of the Lake. Your reporter is responsible for the flag. I felt that our community should be up-to-date, and made the motion at the last meeting of the women's organization. The meeting day of the Cullom- Knoll will be changed. According to the report, it will be held some evening in the first week of each month through September. Page Sevenleta most appreciative that the Tabors moved furniture out of one room to make room for the gals. What she did not know--. was the fact that there WAS no furniture. The Tabors are re-doing their recreation room, and the new lounges have not arrived as yet! But it was still a mighty nice gesture. Big Thrill For Mrs. Jean McDonald and Mrs. May Kennenberg was the visit on Sunday of Mrs. Marv Cosgrove, 83, of Chicago. She was the closest friend to their j mother during her lifetime, and they have not had a reunion for many years. Present also was son. BoB, who is a talented piano player. He is on his way to Las Vegas to fulfill an engagement playing the organ at one of the clubs. It w^s a wonderful visit for all concerned. Welcome Home. To Mrs. Elizabeth Peterson who has returned to the rural life. Instead of residing in her own home on Fountain Lane, she will live with her daughter and son-in-law, Mayda and Gene Shigley of Hickory Drive. Mrs. Peterson is physically handicapped as a result of her illness and needs constant care which she will receive plenty of--from the Shigleys. Wow! Nothing But Women! And plenty of them--seventeen to be exact--invaded the home of Betty and Nick Tabor of Lakewood subdivision recently. Fifteen of the girls were the sorority sisters of Diane who attend Northern U. at DeKalb. The young women attended a prom and were unable to return to the sorority house before lights out, and the Tabor home was most centrally located. Imagine Nick and Betty supplying sleeping accommodations for this gf'oup, plus their own two daughters, Ruth included! Breakfast on Sunday morning was also provided. A cute note was the thanks from one of the girls. She was SAVE with Safety Successful Breakfast Another community breakfast given by the McCullom Lake Men's club was held Sunday at Berenice and Whitey's --and very well attended. The fellows hold this affair on the first Sunday of each month and they are proving very popular. As wo said before--it is a grand idea. Presented With Flowers Mrs. Ingeborg Olsen- was awarded a lovely corsage for the honor of being the oldest mother present at the Mother and Daughter tea given by the Women of the Church at Nativity Lutheran church, Wonder Lake. The wife of. our minister. Mrs. Burton Schroedev. made the presentation. Mrs. Ronald Walsh of Wonder Lake was honored and also received a corsage for holding the title of youngest mother present. The affair was just wonderful and well planned, and it was a thrill to attend. Your reporter and daughters, Chrys, D. D., our little fellow, Matt, Berenice and Diane Bjork, all enjoyed the privilege of sharing Mama Olsen's presence. Heaps of Good Wishes To Teddy Hocin whose birthday we missed in April. President of the Ladies of the Lake, Mrs. Betty Poledna will be celebrating her natal day tomorrow, ^g'iday. May 8. Donnie Tomasello will be one year older on May 9. Lil Sawdo and Irma Oberhuber are expecting something special from their hubbies on their mutual birthday. May 10. Kim Wilson will be 5 on May 11 and 'teen age Chickie Tomasello also celebrated this date. Best wishes to. Lena Eckhardt who will have another candle on her birthday cake May 12. Take care in the hot sun--and doesn't it feel wonderful? Remember the ice. cold and snow? See you next week! ALLOT $2,200,000 FOR DEVELOPMENT OF FOX RIVER The Fox River development was allotted $2,200,000 in the biennial budget message of Gov. William G. Stratton, delivered before a joint session of Senate and House in Springfield. Of this amount, $100,000 was designated for the Department of Conservation to use in land acquisition and study foT* development of boat launching sites. The division of Waterways was ollocated the $1,100,000 it said was needed to construct seven dams, the balance going for completion of the master plan for the river and acquisition of land or easements where necessary. ~ Gov. Stratton said he was forced to cut the requests of the Commission for the Development of the Fox River in about the same proportion as he had to use the knife on the stupendous budgetary requests of other departments. "There simply is not enough money to go around, so it became necessary to trim everyone's requests", the governor said. : *\ He added that the figure quoted would make it possible to get the program under way this year and that he hoped there would be more money available by the next bienium. Cliffard D. Carlson of Geneva, chairman of the Fox commission, said he was disappointed there was no more money available, but expressed confidence the long-range proj gram will be completed. He reminded that the governor has planned to recreate the commission for additional help in promoting the project. Beware of soft shoulders after a heavy spring rain. If forced off the pavement, or if necessary to stop along the road, slow down gradually, do not attempt to turn wheels too sharply to right or left. Take it slowly when starting, try not to spin wheels, and ease your way back on pavement when traffic is clear. From where I sit... iy Joe Marsh Call it- Helping Bud to Blossom #/ /i When his wife left on a visit, Bud Harper promised to take care of her potted plants. He moved them out to the porch where he'd be sure to see them --and then forgot them. Week later, Mrs. Harper asked about the plants in a letter. Bud rushed out, expecting to find them dead. But they were in perfect shape -- even the pots had been rearranged. Naturally, Bud was mystified. Then he found a note on one of the plants: "We'll lose this one unless you put Ammonium Sulphate on it. Pete" (He's the milkman.) From where I sit, "neighborliness" is a wonderful thing, particularly when it's put into practice every day. This week, for example, why not have some neighbors in for a glass of beer or a cnp of coffee? (Serving them their preference in beverages--that's "neighborliness" too.) Mx.
