Riverside Dr., POPPY DAY The citizens of this community will be given an opportunity to honor America's war dead by wearing the veteran's poppy on May 23, 1959, proclaimed annual Poppy Day, here ac* cording to Mrs. Frances Matchen, Poppy chairman of McHenry unit. No. 491, American Legion auxiliary, who will be assisted in the sale of the poppies by all able members of the unit. The wearing of the poppy will also honor the veterans who served their country and are still suffering from the ravages^ of war. : The little red flowers, replicas of the poppies that bloomed on Flander's Field between the rows of crosses, have become the emblem of hope for thousands of hospitalized veterans who are given employment in the construction of the flowers. As they make the flowers of red cloth and green paper stems, their hands and minds are busy, a valuable theraputic aid towards the veteran's recovery. It gives them hope ind courage in knowing they tre helping the widows, orphans and children of veterans in need. The memorial poppies to be worn here have been made by the disabled veterans in Illinois hospitals, who served in two World Wars and the Korean Conflict. Many units have increased the number of poppies over last year's purchase to help meet the need of the increasing number of hospitalized veterans. All contributions received on Poppy Day will be used for veterans' rehabilitation and child welfare projects, according to Mrs. Matchen, Poppy chairman.
