THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, Mar 21,1959 SOFTBALL NOTES Manager John Knox is very optimistic about his Sh&mrock baseball team and more so since they clobbered the Elgin Braves last Sunday. Another Elgin team, the Arrows, will be here next Sunday, John says he has some additional pitching strength lined up and will also have some high school players available as the school season ends. Sometimes high school players are riot ready for county league play, but some of the boys coming out have shown real ability. Tom Claybaugh is a pitcher. You always need pitchers. Tom Roti is a second baseman and can play the outfield. Jack Schaefer played shortstop in high school and had experience With the Shamrocks last year at second and third. Jim Petersen makes a big target as a first - baseman and is a good team man. John Moss is a catcher and can also play the outfield. In order to sharpen their play, Manager Knox has scheduled some extra games. He also hopes that these games will give him a chance to give more players a chance to get in the game. On Saturday afternoon of this week at 5 o'clock the Holland Inklers, a team composed of Lane Tech players, will come to the local diamond for a game. WARRIORS HAPPY AGAIN AFTER 8-1 WIN AT WOODSTOCK On Thursday, May 28th, the Lake Zurich nine will be here for a 6 p.m. practice game. We were sorry to hear that Tom Huemann was injured last Sunday at Johnsburg. Tom gives it all he has in every game. You can bet your life that Ray Miller and his Richmond team will be primed for victory when they come to Johnsburg next Sunday. Manager Joe Frett and his Tigers again look like the team to beat in this league and Ray Miller is just the fellow to give it a real try. Joe and Ray have both been around the diamond a long, long time and know how to play the game. Of course, Casey Stengel has been around a long time, too, but look at the troubles he has this year. One nice thing about the World Series this year . . . the teams won't have to travel so far. Milwaukee to Comiskey Park is just a short hop. Sports news is heavy this week and space is limited. May have to hold over some copy. If any of you reporters want copy paper, please stop at the Plaindealer. Would also like to ask that you double space when typing stories. The story of the Johnsburg -- Woodstock game came in after forms were all locked up last week. That's "how come?" it didn't get in. Gene Freund's pitching was the big item while Lloyd Freund led the hitters with 3 for 5. Please get copy in a day early next week. It's a holiday week. By Ron Smith Hallelujah! McHenry's Warriors feel a little bit happier once again. The reason is last Friday's breezing 8.-1 victory over Woodstock, a team which started us off on our 8 game losing streak earlier in the year. John Steinbach startecj and, as usual, pitched a fine ball . game. He finally received some support from his teammates at bat and on the field., John struck out 6, walked 5, and allowed only 3 hits to coast to victory. In addition, the 1 run 'was unearned. Jack Schaefer, Jim Smith, Ron Smith and John Moss led 'the attack as these four players accounted for 10 of the Warriors grand total of 14 hits, which is by far our high for the year. Every starter except Steinbach got into the act. Almost every out or safety was well tagged as the Warriors continued to hit that ball at a pretty good clip. Four of the 14 hits went for extra-bases, including back-toback home runs by Ron Smith and John Moss in the third, and two triples by Schaefer and Mike Gantert (his second in two days). Woodstock got their 1 one run in the first on 3 walks and an error on a routine ground ball. After that, it was pretty easy pitching for Steinbach. The Warriors jumped on Bentsen, a good pitcher who shut us out last tim£, in the third for 8 runs and 8 hits. Seven of these came after 2 were out. The big inning went like this: Sompel singled to leadoff and went to second as Steinbach bunted. Jack Schaefer got his second hit driving home Sompel with the tying run. Schaefer stole second. Oeffling singled to left field, sending home Schaefer with the second run of the inning. Jim Smith singled to left, sending Oeffling to third base. Mike Gantert then walloped a triple to left field, scoring both runners and making the score 4-1. It was his second threebase hit in 2 days. Ron Smith then hit a 3-1 pitch into leftcenter and circled the base paths for a 2-run homer. It was his second homer in 2 days, both with Gantert on base. John Moss then stepped up to the plate and accomplished a rare feat, especially in high school ball. He laced a drive into almost the same spot as Smith's, and tore around the bases for his first homer of the year and McHenry's third of the year. Hack-to-back home runs in high school are very unusual. Sompel, who led off the inning. walked as did Steinbach. Schaefer got his second hit of the inning to drive in Sompel, but Steinbach was out trying to take third. 8 runs, 8 hits, 1 error. The Warriors were* quieted down somewhat after that, but t h e damage to Bentsen's chances for his second victory over us was done. McHenry has now won 4 and lost 6 in conference play. We have two games remaining on tTie card. We played Zion Tuesday. May 19, and Dundee comes here on Thursday, May 21. for the final game of the year. Box Score McHenry (8) 3B. HR. "SB. Due to so many events coming up on Sundays, it was agreed by the board there will be no meetings on Sundays in the summer. NOTICE THE McHenry Plaindealer WILL BE PUBLISHED ONE DAY EARLIER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. ALL COPY DEADLINES WILL BE MOVED UP ONE DAY. McCullom Lake Sportsmen's Club Flight "ONE"-- The first meeting of the McCullom Lake Sportsman's Archery section went off to a flying start. Off to the right and left, and all but in the proper target--but it's sure trying. It takes practice to appreciate the fine art of bow hunting and shooting. Now we can begin to start a handicap, so beginners will have the benefit of the doubt, and all can not feel badly if and when they "miss", and they will do just that. Did you ^notice how the targets are set at the various distances? That's to provide a little obstacle in shooting, so it isn't just so easy as you would think! Deer, wolf, coyote, doves, and one stray pussy cat target are among the faces being, used, plus of course, the standard ^olored faces. Six movable or portable ones are along the side lines for the beginners and also the "small fry"--(age 12 or better to and including 15). Small fry or juniors--12 to' 15; intermediates 15 to 18; and seniors 18 to? so you see it's open to ALL. See you there every Sunday and Saturday too:-- 1:30 p.m. to? at Gene Johnsons, old Ringwood Road just north of 120 across from road going into West Shore Beach Bring your bows and "errors"! ATTEND RECITAL Among those from McHenry who enjoyed the spring recital of the music students of Sacred Heart academy at Lisle on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. William H. Tonyan, Mrs. Elizabeth Tonyan and Odilon Long. Weber was the batting star for the Shamrocks with five for six. Don Jourdan, Herb Baker and Denney Freund all had three hits. The Shamrocks scored nine runs in the first on six walks an error, and singles by Freund, Jourdan, Baker and Weber. We scored three more runs in the seventh on two walks, a fielders choice and singles by Baker and Weber. We scored our final ten runs in the eighth when Chuck Olson lead off with a home run and Roger Benson followed with a single. Jourdan then doubled and Knox followed with a walk. Then Baker and Long both got singles. After Stanek grounded out Weber and Freund both singled. Olson was safe on an error and Benson doubled.
