Ed Marsh, phone Woodstock -- 1610-M-2. 43-tf If you want to get rid of real estate taxes on your home, trade in the place on a house trailer. These comfortable residences, now glorified by the name of "mobile homes," are excluded from real estate taxes under Illinois law. Consequently, most trailerites contribute no local taxes to support, schools, roads or municipal or county government. School districts, having a large number of trailers located within their boundaries, have been hard put to make ends meet; with the other property owners in the district --and the State-- meeting the major part of the bill. For many years trailer park operators resisted all types of control. Lack of sanitation and safety standards finally resulted in regulation, which has put the fly-by-night operators out of business and changed the remaining trailer parks into clean, safe, and decent places for families to live. But a check of the tax revenues from trailer parks show that trailerites pay little or nothing by way of local property tax. This would be changed by Senate Bill No. 148 (sponsored by your state senator) which would tax trailers exactly as any other residence where the trailer is parked ninety days or more in the county. An alternative measure, Senate Bill No. 681, would impose an occupancy tax on each trailer owner of $5 per month to be col lected and distributed as other local property taxes. These tax measures are meeting violent opposition from trailer park operators. However, despite the strong lobby resisting any tax on trailers, many conscientious trailer park operators and trailer occupants recognize the justification for legislation to enable the owners of "mobile homes" to pay some tax tp support our local institutions and services. Your senator's bills are now before a sub-committee composed of senators Anthony De- Tolve, George Johns and Hayes Robertson. These senators are hearing the trailerites' story in full measure. But, as is generally the case, the public has no lobby and few witnesses to protest the trailer occupants "free ride." Still in these days of,, high property taxes, home owners should be aroused by the realization that mobile home owners (except those few who pay a small personal property taxi pay no property tax whatever. No wonder many people sell their homes and buy a trailer! C00P.3 CORNER by Marie Schnettgen. When you are having leftovers for dinner or just a salad for lunch, a hot bread will be a welcome addition to the meal. This is different and good. Graham Muffins 1 cup graham flour 1 cup white flour 1 tsp. salt M cup sugar \ tsp soda (baking) % cup sour milk (or half cream half water) . 1 egg Mix graham and whit^-fiour, salt, sugar and soda, add milk and-egg. Beat two minutes. Fill well-buttered muffin pans onehalf full. Bake 20 minutes in 350 degree oven. A small dish of stewed apricots, pears or apple sauce makes a good accompaniment to the muffins. Homemaking Tips Hqw up to date are your' sorting habits? Although the age-old customs of sorting laundry into loads by "putting cottons and linens together" and "separat ing white things from colored" are still basically sound, they need yto be modified to include current laundry problems. In this age of automatic washers, women wash so frequently that the pile of dirty laundry is rarely large enough to sort into all-white and allcolored loads. Also, the many new fibers require broader sorting methods. Shirts, socks, table linen and underwear may be cotton, linen, synthetics or combinations of these fibers. Mrs. Ruth Galbraith, associate professor of home economics, University of Illinois, gives these up-to-date procedures for sorting the family laundry into loads: All normally soiled articles that can stand hot water (140 degrees F.) and regular washing cycle (10 minutes), whether white or colorfast, can be washed together. A typical load might include sheets, pillowcases, towels, shirts, children's clothes and underwear. If you have enough to separate the white from the colored, or the heavily soiled from the lightly soiled, do so. But they can be washed together. White nylon is the exception to mixing colored and white fabrics. White nylon picks up color from even colorfast fab-"1 rics. Colored fabrics are divided"" on the basis of colorfastness and the amount of soil. Heavily soiled articles require hot water. Nonfast colors will do better in cooler water (100- 115 degrees F.). But these are guides, not rules. Jeans, work clothes and socks require hot water and a 10-minute cycle, because they are heavily soiled, even though they may not be; colorfast. To determine colorfastness, squeeze a portion of the fabric in water the same temperature as the wash water. If it colors the water, don't put it in the load. You can test bindings and trimmings, such as red braid on a white colar, by moistening them and pressing . between folds of a white cloth. Sheer or delicate fabrics in both garments and household items make another machine oad. The maximum water temperature for synthetic fibers is 120 degrees F. Since these articled are usually lightly soiled, they should wash clean in 5 minutes. Garments with weak, fraying seams or applied trimmings can be included in this group. Protect them by washing in a net or mesh bag. Bulky articles, such as bath mats, cotton rugs, bedspreads and mattress pads, are also grouped according to cplorfastless and soil. Again the amount of soil, fiber content and colorfastness will determine the temperature and washing cycle. New Sound Film A new 16-mm sound-color film ti.tled "Visit Illinois" has been produced by Gov. William G. Stratton's Illinois Departmental Information Service, the state's travel agency. The film is an invitation to "all men everywhere to visit historical Illinois during the sesquicentennial year of the birth of our own Abraham Lincoln," in the \v%rds of Gov. Stratton.
