Pearson recently attended a tea given in the Merritt Art gallery of Northern Illinois university, which was given in honor of students whose work was published in Towers, the university literary magazine. James was honored for his winning cover design and his work as art coordinator. \ The Towers, published in May of each year, is sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, honorary National English fraternity, and contains literary and art work chosen on a selective basis, with quality, originality and student interest in view. The winning cover design depicted a two dimensional motif which was derived from the administration building, sometimes known as "the castle on t^ie hill". In his work as art coordinator, it was his responsibility to make illustrations and to use the selected art work of others in such a way as to create a well designed magazine. Copies of the 1959 Towers were distributed to all students attending the university. Mars, when he was surprised on a "This is Your Life" program at the Community Methodist church hall. That night, a very efficient cubmaster was presenting his last Cub pack program. Mr. Mars had already filed his formal resignation after five years of service to McHenry boys. Among those who appeared to make the evening complete were Clyde Bailey, Ed. Nardi, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Rodde and son, Robert, Mrs. Ricker, Mrs. Isabel Karmel, Lynn Stuart. Hugh Kirk, Walter Aufrecht and Mrs. Mars and two sons. A look of complete surprise registered on Mr. Mars'face when the program began at the close of the regular Cub pack meeting. Most of those who took part were friends out of his early scouting life, who came from back stage to complete the story. Largely responsible for making the event a success was Mrs. Charles Hueckstaedt, who conceived the idea as a fitting "goodbye" and "thank you" for the many things Mr. Mars has done for the young boys in Cub Scouts.
