Catherine M. Sullivan, University of Illinois home management specialist, suggests that they ask themselves such questions as: Do we really need it now? How much will credit cost? Where can we borrow? The answers may be quite different, depending on whether they are thinking of a "necessary" range or an "optional" hi-fi set. Miss Sullivan suggests that the young couple consider five areas before they decide to buy on credit. First, know family resources and expenses thoroughly. What is the total yearly income? What are the approximate total expenses, including emergency fund and savings? The difference between these two gives some idea of how much may be available for installment or other types of credit payments. Second, determine how much credit will cost. This involves knowing the cash price and comparing it with the total payment. The difference may encourage the couple to postpone the purchase until they can pay cash. Third, know the sources and costs of credit, and "shop" for credit. When shopping for equipment and furnishings, find out about the credit terms offered by the merchants and dealers. Then consider other sources of credit, such as banks, insurance companies, private lenders, credit unions and small loan or personal finance companies. Investigate each and see which suits you best. Fourth, thoroughly understand the terms of the contract. Know the total amount due. how it will be paid, when it will be paid and what will happen if the payment is late or can't be paid. Whether you are 6, 60, or 160 years old the tax mut be paid on any wages earned in jobs covered by Social Security. Many people think they do not have to pay the tax after they are receiving benefits, or after they are 65, or 72, according to Bernard Barnett, manager of the District Social Security Office in Waukegan. The Social Security law provides a tax on wages paid for work performed in most jobs, Barnett said. Another tax is on the employer's payroll. There is also a tax on the net profit of operating most businesses. The money raised by these taxes goes into a trust fund used to pay benefits to qualified, retired workers at age 65 (62 for women) who restrict their earnings to $1200 a year. Beneficiaries who earn over $1200 may lose one benefit check for each $80, or fraction, earned in excess of $1200. However, benefits must b£ paid for any month the beneficiary earned $100 or less ($80 or less before 1959), or was 72 years of age.
