McHenry Shores Youngsters Cop Fishing Awards by Louise Winters--2897 The rules governing the recent fishing contest, sponsored by the S.S.A.C. were reversed, by mutual consent of the judges, and Ste\e Schweikert went home with the first prize plaque, thanks to a string of forty-five pan fish. From what we hear, he camped out all night. Freddy Stark, Jr., was proud of the 11 inch crappie he caught; it netted him the second prize plaque. Chuck Whitney, the only adult to win a prize, came in third with a 10 inch crappie. Besides the plaques, the winners and runners- up received fishing equipmerit donated by the merchants of McHenry. Many thanks to Fred Stark. Sr., for the plaques awarded at this tournament. Fred also designed and donated the ones for the recent horseshoe tournament. ' Nfw Sailor j Another of our boys has entered the service* of our country, as Jerry Mueller flies to the naval base in San Diego to start boot training on Friday, the nineteenth. He has just returned from a fishing trip, but reports they just weren't biting on Rose Lake, near Vargas, Minn. They have a lot bigger fish in the Pacific, anyway, Jerry. Good luck. Happy Birthday To little Billy Dostal, who was all of three on June 14. Visits and Visitors Gus and Helen Smith had unexpected, but very welcome 1 guests, for several days last week as their three grandchildren from Dayton. Ohio, visited them while their parents attended a funeral in up- • per Michigan. ' Jack Schmitt was another surprised host when his brother, "Richard, from Alexandria, Va., phoned from Chicago, asking directions to McHenry. It was-a short but enjoyable visit. Mishap Festivities were somewhat dimmed at the beach on a recent Sunday. Mike Wetzel fell off of the boat pier and cut his foot on some broken glass. Emergency at McHenry hospital closed up the gash with five stitches. All of us are sorry to see little Mike suffer because of the carelessness of unthinking people. Those of us who witnessed this unfortunate accident would like to stress the use of the containers provided for such glass and rubbish, including bottle caps. Golf Last minute reminder for the two ball foursome at the Pistakee Country club this Sunday, June 21. SHIPPING COST REDUCED The cost of shipping grain has been substantially reduced since the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the arrival of the first ocean-going vessel at Chicago, Director of Agriculture Stillman J. Stanard reported to Gov. William G. Stratton. "The current shipping rate via the new seaway from Chicago to Rotterdam is 24 cents a bushel," Stanard reported. "This is roughly nine cents less than last year before the deep draft locks were opened. While this reduction is a tremendous stimulant to the grain market of the midwest, it is only the first step toward a healthy commerce in our agriculture products."
