That is the advice of the National Safety Council as America gets ready to celebrate the Fourth of July. "People get a little too carefree simply because it's a holiday," the Council warned. "They forget to be cautious. They get "holiday happy.'" The Council added that holiday periods are among the most dangerous times of the year -- 25 to 30 per cent more dangerous on the highway, for example, than normal periods. "And that's the time," said the Council, "When everyone should be mpre safety-conscious than ever. "The f&ct that it's Independence Day doesn't mean we can afford to be independent on the highway. Cooperation and courtesy are the keys to ! traffic safety." Some forty-five million mo- ! lorists are expected on the i highways during the three-day i Fourth of July weekend, j During the three-day Fourth I of July weekend last year more i than 650 persons died in accidents. Traffic deaths led all jot her holiday fatalities with | 370. The Council feels it is pos- I sible to keep the highway accij dent toll down this year if drivers use simple common sense and courtesy. Here's its code for the road this Fourth of July: If you drive, don't drink; look out for the other guy -- and yourself; adjust your speed to conditions; take it easy -- don't tire yourself; be considerate; use your seat belts. And if you don't have seat belts, get them. They can save your life. "Remember," said the Council, "there are millions of others just as eager as you are for a happy holiday.
