The members and guests enjoyed a tasty luncheon and games of cards on the beautiful lawn that looks out othe Fox river. On July 11 and 12, Mrs. Charles Walgreen opened her beautiful estate "Hazelwood" to the public. Three houses on the estate were open for inspection: the guest house which evolved from the original barn, the log cabin which Lincoln visited, and the Cliff house which was built by Mr. and Mrs. Walgreen on a high bluff over looking the river. "Hazelwood" is located near Dixon. 111., and has acres of woodlands, stretches of lawn and many different beds of flowers. The proceeds from this were contributed to the Abraham Lincoln Memorial gardens located in Springfield. This is just one of the many projects sponsored by the Illinois Garden Clubs to live up to their motto, "Keep Illinois Beautiful". The next meeting of the club will be held July 28 at the home 67 Mrs. Clinton E. Martin. Atl members are urged to attend. Democratic Women Plan Membership Tea The Democratic Woman's club will hold their annual membership tea on Wednesday, July 22, at 1:30 p.m. The tea will be held on the spacious lawn of Mrs. Robert Stueben, 400 W. Waukegan road, and all members are urged to ittend and bring along new members. A special invitation is extended to all newcomers in the area to join the group. Election of officers will take place and plans will get under way for the fall style show of Aug. 24. Suggestions will be welcome for the coming year's program. Hughes-Garrelts Vows Exchanged Miss Joanne Hughes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hughes of Rt. 3, McHenry, became a lovely bride on Saturday, July 11, when she exchanged nuptial vows with Mr, Richard Garrelts, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Garrelts of Rt. 4, McHenry. Rev. Fr. Edward C. Coakley officiated at the 11 o'clock marriage. The church altars were decorated with bouquets of glads and white pom poms. The Mass was sung by Mi's. Clemens Adams, accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Carl Weber. The charming bride selected a white, floor length dress of chiffon, with basque bodice, jewel-trimmed portrait neckline and long, tapered sleeves. Her headpiece was a jeweltrimmed Swedish crown which held a fingertip silk illusion veil. Attending the bride were Mrs. Robert Bozarth, Mrs. Harvey Sand and Miss Peggy Kirsch of Waukegan, Mrs. Walter Garrelts of Eastwood Manor and Miss Rosa Hughes of McHenry. All were attired similarly in white cocktail length chiffon dresses, with contrasting light blue and cotillion blue cummerbunds repeated in the back sashes. Their headpieces were open picture hats of light blue, with deeper colored sashes. Charles O'Leary of Woodstock. Richard French and Eugene Hughes of McHenry and Walter Garrelts of Eastwood Manor attended the groom. Mrs. Hughes chose a pastel blue dress with all-over lace pattern, with which she wore white accessories, a light blue hat and a corsage of pink and white carnations. Mrs. Garrelts wore a pink all-over lace dress, white accessories and a similar corsage. A wedding dinner followed the ceremony at 1:30 o'clock at the V.F.W. clubhouse for thirty-five guests. Later, 450 guests gathered there for a reception. Among those attending both- the wedding and reception were the bride's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Pesz, of Rt. 3, McHenry. The newlyweds are now enjoying a trip into upper Wisconsin and Canada. Upon their return they will reside near McCullom Lake. The bride graduated in 1955 from the McHenry high school and later from St. Therese school of nursing in Waukegan. The groom graduated in 1950 from the local high school, served three years in the Marine corps and at present is employed by Weber Plumbing & Heating. ARNOLD MAY HEADS K OF C FOR SECOND TERM Bridal Couple Arnold May of Richmond was installed as grand knight of the Knights of Columbus recently at the annual election and installation service. Robert Fagan, district deputy, was the installing officer, assisted by Harold Evans, both of Woodstock. This is May's second term. District Deputy .Fagan announced that McHenry council was outstanding, having collected the highest percentage in their district for the Newman Foundation and also by winning the coveted "6 point program award at the state convention. Credit for these awards, according to Disrict Deputy Fagan/^goes to the grand knight and his supporting team. Others installed were William J. Nuber, McHenry. deputy grand knight; Vincent W. A family basket picnic has been planned for the McHenry County Association for Retarded Children at a meeting of the executive board last week. The outdoor social meeting will be held at the city park in Woodstock Sunday, July 26, from 3 p.m. until dark for the families and friends of retarded children in the county- The parent group plans to have monthly picnics throughout the summer and fall to provide for socialization of the children, who are generally iso- I lated outside of the classroom. I Notices will be sent to those who have expressed an interest in the group previously, and the officers cordially invite new members, or anyone interested in this educational group, to come to the picnic. The rummage sale conducted at Wonder Lake in June grossed $125. and plans are under way to hold another sale in October in McHenry. The Wonder L^ke Chamber of Commerce donated $25 to the organization. T h e p r o g r a m c o m m i t t e e , whose chairman is Mrs. Eugene Colby of Crystal Lake, is working on the scheduling of speakers and events for the coming year. The meeting date has been established as the last Tuesday in the month, with the meeting place revolving around McHenry high school, Central school in Crystal Lake, Olsen school in Woodstock and Harrison school in Wonder Lake. Tentatively, the September meeting has Mrs. Adel Karlsen, of the Illinois Council for Mentally Retarded Children, on the agenda. The meeting will be held at McHenry high school Sept. 29, at which time the officers will be installed.
