LIFE AND DEATH ttrTIHE sword," says Mohammed, "is the key of heaven and of hell: a drop of blood shed in the cause of God, a night spent in arms, is of more avail than two months of fasting and prayer; whosoever falls in battle, his sins are forgiven; at the day of judgment his wounds shall be resplendent as vermilion, and odoriferous as musk; and the loss of his limbs shall be supplied by the wings of angels and cherubim." --Quoted by Gibbon, Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, which was completed in 1787. Speech and wind-swift thought, and all the moods that mold a state, hath he taught himself; and how to flee the arrows of the frost, when 'tis hard lodging under the clear sky, and the arrows of the rushing rain; yea, he hath resource for all; without resource he meets nothing that must come: Only against Death shall he call for aid in vain. -- Sophocles (495-406 B.C.), from the play Antigone. "/MS* Sf » "Hast thou not seen a play acted in which kings, emperors, pontiffs, knights, ladies, and divers other personages were introduced . . . and when the play is over, and they have put off the dresses they wore in it, all the actors become equal? . . . The same thing happens in the comedy and life of this world, where some play emperors, others popes, and, in short, all the characters that can be brought into a play; but when it is over, that is to say when life ends, death strips them all of the garments that distinguish one from the other, and all are equal in the grave."-- Don Quixote, by Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616). It was Mr. Howard's absence from last Saturday evening's Legion installation that prompted friends to call at his home. Harold Vycital had answerea a request of a few days previous to stop at the Howard home. t He called, about 9 o'clock in the evening and found no one there. Later, he and other Legionaires went to the house.
