Her death was very unexpected as she was in the feest of spirits when in company with her daughter, Mrs. Susie Smith, she attended an icp cream social at the Schneider home the night before. Before one of the largest gatherings that ever witnessed a wedding ceremony in McHenry township, Henry J. Stilling, Jr., and Miss Christina Justen were united in marriage by Rev. S. AVolfgarten at St. John's church, Johnsburg, Wednesday morning. George Yager, who has conducted a billiard and pool room here the past three years, has disposed of the business to Gus Scholes and with his family will move to Chicago. The old hardware building, until last week occupied by F. L. McOmber, is' in the hands of the wreckers and before ..the end of the week will have vanished. A beautiful new cement store building to be occupied by Mr. McOmber Will take its place. The Altar and Rosary society of St. Patrick's church will hold an ice cream social at R. J. Sutton's Friday evening, July 30. Ice cream and cake will be served for fifteen cents. Those wishing transportation are asked to be at Block and Bethke's store at 8 o'clock. Aurora is believed to have broken all records in these United States as to the number of cases of appendicitis developing there in proportion to the population. The peculiar part is that the doctors at Aurora list most of the cases as sympathetic appendicitis, many persons having been stricken ill with the affliction shortly, after sympathizing with the ilk FORTY YEARS AGO Taken from the Files df July 24, 1919 Arthur Hunter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Hunter, entertained the members of the class of "18" and a few friends with a boat ride to Fox Lake last Saturday evening. Stops were made at the Colonial and Willis Inn dance hall, where a few social hours were spent. Refreshments were, served on board the boat. A grain shocking bee, composed of members of the West McHenry Pleasure club, was held on the farm worked by Lewis McDonald, west of this village Tuesday evening, where thirty-three acres of grain were shocked.; in 2% hours. Lewis Stoffel, Thomas Stanton and George Justen left Monday evening for the West, where they expect to put in the next few weeks in the harvest fields of the Dakotas. In honor of Misses Mary and Nellie^ McSwiggan of Chicago, the Masses Knox very pleasantly entertained a number of their young friends at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Knox, south of town, last Thursday evening. Games, music and a "weenie roast" formed a delightful evening for those present. The pastor and parishioners of St. Mary's Catholic church are indebted to Everett Hunter for the fine job of painting on the cross which now adorns the steeple of St. Mary's edifice. The work was donated by Mr. Hunter and therefore is all the more ap? predated by St. Mary's parish. Several auto loads of workers from this village now make daily trips, to the Terra Cotta factory each day. TJVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Taken from the Files of July 26, 1934 Mrs. Samantha Button, who had gained ^renown throughout the United States as being the only living Civil War mother, and McHenry's oldest resident, who had lived two and onehalf years beyond the century mark, died Sunday night, July 22, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Culver. All heat records for July were broken in this territory Tuesday, and residents sweltered in a long seven-day heat spell which brought a toll of over 700 deaths throughout the country. Forecaster Donnel of Chicago stated that the official temperature1 of 109 in Chicago was the highest ever reached on a government thermometer here since the establishment of the weather bureau in 1871. Hot nights as well as days brought no relief and local residents have suffered from the heat and drought of the past several days. Anton Immekus, 71. years old, a summer, resident at^Pistakee Bay for the past twentynine years, died Sunday afternoon, July 22, at St. Joseph's hospital, Chicago, where he was removed on Friday. Miss Dorothy Knox, who .will be a bride of next month, 4ps guest of honor at a handkerchief shower given by Mrs. J. W. North at her home near Johnsburg Tuesday afternoon.
