\ age Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday. August 6, 1959; WT I Another sport and recreational attraction comes to the McHenry area as "The Rabbit Track" opens at Fritzshe Estates. We have been • told that six little "ears called track rabbits run around a track, giving both drivers and spectators quite a thrill. Other recreational facilities have been added in McHenry the past week as new equipment was placed in the old "Clay Hole" lot When we were kids, parents warned about going near the "Clay Hole". It was said to be spring fed, 60 feet deep, 90 feet deep, bottomless or reaching China. Only the brave dared go near the spot. We sat on our mother's porch this evening and talked of< the many changes that have occurred in the West Side neighborhood where we grew up. Across the street there was activity as the family gathered at the Bacon home. Their mother had passed away earlier in the day. We had many occasions to visit Mrs. Bacon and each visit gave us some good laughs. It isn't too long ago that we stuck our head in the front door for an exchange of greetings and came away with a smile and the realization that a good old soul was not quite herself. If they have special departments up there in heaven, they can make room for one who never hestitated to tell a joke on herself. The Northern Illini Bowmen's Club held a Safari Shoot recently that drew 418 archers from 25 clubs in Wisconsin and Illinois. This breaks a previous record of 381 set a couple of years ago. Don't tell us there is nothing to do in a small town. If you can't find your sport, just mention it to two other people and they will start a club. SHAMROCKS WIN OVER ALGONQUIN 3-1 TO MOVE UP Denny Freund Hits And Pitches Way To McHenry Victory By Mickey Schaefer "JSeems to us somebody was going to turn in news on Pony League activities. -Our "Girl Friday" has abandoned the sports desk in Ye Olde Plaindealer office this week and gone vacationing. Her picture recently rated space in "Put and Take" after she took over the sport page for us one week. . And we found a "Gone Fishin" sign on Bill Moore's desk Monday morning. Tall stories vylll float around next week. Last Sunday the McHenry Shamrocks defeated Algonquin 3-1 behind the two hit pitching of Denny Freund. The victory moved the Shamrocks in a three way tie with Dundee and Algonquin for fifth place with and 8-7 won-lost record. Denny Freund struck out 13 and walked seven in recording the victory. Denny was also the hitting star with a home run and a double in four trips to the plate, during in two runs. He also scor&d two runs. Herb Baker also had two hits in four trips to the plate. Jack Schaefer and Jim Justen had the other two Shamrock hits. Algonquin scored first in the second when Don Wilbrant led off with a walk, went to third on a single by Blair. Bruban struck out and Tubby Simonini walked to fill the bases with one out. Hereburg grounded to Denny Freund who made the putout himself while Wilbrandt scored from third, Klassman struck out to retire the side. Rowlett's single in the seventh was the only other hit off Denny besides Blair's single in the second. McHenry tied it up in the third on a home run by Denny Freund. We scored our last two runs in the fifth when Jack Schaefer led off and was safe on the third baseman's throwing error. After Stanek grounded out Denny Freund hit a long double scoring Schaefer with the lead run and taking third on the throw in. Jim Wickenkamp worked the pitcher for a walk. Wickenkamp stole second and when the catcher threw to second, Denny scored from third. August . 5, the McHenry Shamrocks travel to Wisconsin to- play a night ball game.
